Description

Oct. 2, 1923. v
c. L. ROWLAND PROTECTOR FOR VALVES OF CONTAINERS Filed Aug. 6. 1920 BY I t 1 MW ATTORNEY;
' Patented Oct. 2, 1923.
CHARLES L..B.OWLAND, OF CARBONDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PROTECTOR FOB VALVES OF CONTAINERS.
Application flied August 6, 1920. Serial No. 401.781.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. RowLANn, a citizen of the United States, residin in Carbondale, county of Lackawan'na, tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Protectors for Valves of Containers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to containers used for gases or fumes of a dangerous character, and has more particularly reference to means for protecting the valves thereof during shipment of the container. It consists of the hereinafter described features of construction.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is clothed in a concrete and preferred form in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a bonnet or hood, together with adjacent elements, em-
bodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through one endof a container showing the hood in position, with parts broken away.
1 indicates a container or tank of any suitable construction and shape provided at one end with a surface 2 sunken below its side wall 3 and forming an open valve chamber for the reception of suitable valves as 4. The problem is to protect these valves during shipment of the container. 5 is a dome-shaped hood or bonnet having a circumferential flange 6 provided with spaced notches 7 and finger-holds 8. Arranged in spaced relation in said surface are a pluralityof lugs 9 preferably held in position by being upset as shown and pro- 1ecting'inwardly into the plane of said flange. The bonnet is placed in position on surface 2 with notches 7 of the flange in registry with the lugs and is then given a turn to bring said flange under the lugs thus preventing outward displacement. A set-screw 9 is carried by one of said lugs and by rotation is projected into an opening 10 in the bonnet to prevent circumferential displacement.
It will be seen that by this arrangement the valves are protected and the bonnet is effectively prevented from being displaced during shipment of the container, and that, moreover the bonnet can be quickly removed 1" replaced.
I claim:
1. The combination with a container having an end wall, sunken below its side wall, forming an open valve compartment, valves projecting from said end wall into said compartment, of a removable bonnet covering said valves and housed within said compartment below the end of the side wall, said bonnet having a circumferential flange disosed angularly with respect to the main 0d of the bonnet and extending substantialy parallel to the end wall, and restin on t e latter, and means carried by the en wall for engaging said flange to prevent outward displacement of the bonnet.
2. The combination with a container havin at one end a surface, sunken below its si e wall, forming an open valve compartment, of a removable bonnet having a circumferential flange resting on said surface, means carried by said surface for engaging said circumferential flange to prevent outward displacement of the bonnet, and means for preventing circumferential displacement of said bonnet.
3. The combination with a container havin at one end a surface, sunken below its si e wall, forming an open valve compartment, of a removable bonnet having a circumferential flange resting on said surface, said flange provided with aplurality of notches, raised lugs on said surface projecting inwardly into the plane of the flange, whereby the bonnet may be placed on the surface with the notches in the lane of the lugs and then turned to bring t e flange under the lugs and means for preventing circumferential displacement of said bonpet after the flange is brought under the i. The combination with a container having an end wall, sunken below its side wall,
forming an open valve compartment, valves projecting from said end wall into said compartment, of a removable bonnet covering said valves and housed within said compartment below the end of the side wall, said bonnet having its peripheral edge resting on said end wall, and means carried by the end wall for engaging said edge to prevent outward displacement of the bonnet.
5. The combination with a container having an end wall, sunken belowits side Wall,
forming an open valve compartment, valves projecting from said end wall into said compartment, of a removable and domeshaped bonnet covering said valves and 5 housed within said compartment below the end of the side Well, said bonnet having its peripheral edge resting on said end well,
- meeeee and means carried by the end well for engaging said edge to prevent outward displacement of the bonnet.
Signed at Carbondale, in the county of Lackawanna, and State of Pennsylvania, this 31st'day of Jul 1920.
C A$.L. ROWLAND.
