Application filed. October 25, 1922. Serial No. 596,703.
To @ZZ whom t concern.' Be it known that l/VILLIAM E. SHEnwooD,
a citizen of the United States of America,
' iication.
Vio
I This invention relates to kwagons and more particularly to the so calledV childs spring coaster wagon or'cart. f
The principal object of theinvention is toV provide a spring assembly for the running gear whereby liability of breakage of the springs or otherparts 'ofthe running gear is minimized; f
- l @ther and further objects and advantages of the invention will be in Vpart obvious and in part described as the specification is proceeded with. Y In the accompanying drawings forming part of this description:
Figure` 1 isA a rearrend view of a wagonV showing Vmy invention; p
Figure 2 is a front end view thereof; and
Figure 3 is a side view.
Figure 4L isa detail view partly in cross section of the spring VsupportV as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 5, denotes the body of the cart, 6 and 7 n the front and rear axles, and 8 and 9 the respective front and rear wheels therefor. The body 5, is supported at its front and rear ends upon the respective axles by means of Vfront and rear bolstersand spring assem* Y blies about to be described.
Mounted on the ends of the front and rear axles on the inside ofthe wheels Sand 9,- are brackets 10, preferably made of sheet metal strap material. Vwith apertures 11, in their lower body por- 'tions 12, through which the axles extend,
the inwardly bent horizontally disposed lower ends 13, being snugly securedV to the axles, as by rivets'or bolts 14.
The upper portions of the brackets are formed with the Vupper inturned horizontally disposed apertured portions 15, the vertical portions 59 depending therefrom, and the outwardly extending horizontally -disposed intermediate apertured portions 57,
the latter Vextending .toward and engaging with the inner face of the vvertically disposed body portions 58 of the brackets.v It
These brackets are formed apertured sockets or seats 20 and 21, loosely Vmounted on the posts 16. The upperseats or socket-s 20, bearagainst cotterfpins22, extending through the posts 1 6, which' pins limit the upward movement of the said seats for sockets and also the upward throw ot the posts, and the lower sockets' 21, rest on the horizontal portions 57, of the brackets 10".
Front and rear bolsters 23 and 241 respectively are each formed with upwardly bowed intermediate portions 25, and horizontally disposed apertured end portions 26, the latter terminating in vertically disposed portions 27. The horizontally disposed portions 26, which t snugly beneath and are overlapped by the horizontally 'disposed intermediate apertured portions l5, of the brackets 10, are apertured as at 27', to receive the lower ends of the posts 16. The vertically disposed portions 27 of the bolsters lie flush with the inner face of the brackets. A bar or strap'28, is pierced at its ends by the lower end of the posts 16, and nuts29, on the posts clamp the ends of the bar or strap to the said overlapping inten mediate horizontal portions l5 of the brackets.
The parts so i'ar mentioned and described .areV common to both front and rear running gear assemblies.
Referring now to the front end of the cart, a preferably U-shaped spacing member or brace 30, is interposed between the bar or strap 28, and the upwardly bowed intermediate portion 25, of the bolster' 23, bolts 32, securing the member 30, to the bolster'. A downwardly bowed strap or upper bolster' member 33 secured at its ends to the body 5, by bolts 34, carries a fifth wheel section 35, which seats upon a corresponding section 36, secured to the upwardly bowed portion 25,` of the bolster 24. A front brace 37, connected to the'bQdyY 5, by a bolt 38, is formed with'a horizontal portion 39restiro ing upon .the upper face of .the downwardly bowedlupper front bolster member .33, and with a vertical portion having a horizontally disposed end 40, bearing against the under part or bottom of the body 5. The strap or bar 28, spacing member Y30, upwardly bowed bolster V25, fifth wheel sections, downwardly bowed bolster member 33, and the horizontal portions 4() and 4l,` of the front brace V37, are provided with alined apertures for- .the reception of the king bolt 42. Forwardly .extending tongue straps 52, iare connected at their inner ends between the bar 28, and the bolster member 25, by means of bolts 43, vand a tongue or liandle44 is piyoted at 45, totheoiiter or front ends of the straps.
Rear braces 46, are connected to the body 'at Iktheiriiiner ends Vas by boltsV 47,' Vand rest` upon the bar 28, at their outer ends, the, said A,outer ends being provided with apertures 48, receiving' the lower ends of the Y posts 16;; Nuts'29, on the ends of the posts,
clamp thebar 28, the braces'l, and the hori". "z ontal portion 26, of the bolster 24, tightly ltd @then e Yving thus described my invention,
V',lliat I claim as my invention is:
l. A wagon comprising an axle, 4brackets comprising a vertical Ybody portion aper tured to receive `the ends'of the axle, said body portion having inwardlyV extended ends parallel with and engaging the axle and secured thereto, said body Yportionhavan Vinwardly,eXtending upper apertured horizontal portion, a vertical portion depending from said horizontal portion, an
outwardly Y extending apertured horizontal portion terminating adjacent said body portion, a bolster `having an` .upwardly :bowed intermediate portion and apertured f horizontal end` portions, said end portions un# derlying the outwardly extending horizon- `tal portions of tlie brackets, an apertured cross bar, `postsextending upwardly through the apertures in the cross bar and bolster,
and through the said intu'riied and outturned ,apertured 'horizontal portions of the brack-V ets, coil compression springs on the-posts,VV
means on V the' upper ends of saidsposts engaged bythe upper endsoi said springs, and nieansonisaid. outturned apertured horizontal portion `of said bracket engaged bythe lower end of said spring. Y
comprising a `verticalfbody portion'apertured` to receive the Aends of the axle, i. said vbody portion having inwardly, downwardly,
' V2. ,A wagon comprising an axle, brackets and outwardly bent portions V"formingfhous Y ings therewith, posts mounted in said housv ings and proj ect-ing at their upperand lower f ends respectively through said inwardly and outwardly bent portions,l compression springs on said posts Vfor supportingfsaid posts, a bolster and a cross barliaving'aper-
