Description

Sept. 11, 1923. I 3,4679% P. J. R. POSTEL-VINAY VALVE ACTUATING LEVER F OR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed April 28 1920 r I)? van far Pierre Jean Rene fiws Z'e VZIMJ/ JAM K Patented Sept. 11, 1923 PIERRE JEAN IRENE HOSTEL-VINAY, OF PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO SOCIETE DES MOTEUBS SALMSON, SYSTEME CANTON-URINE, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
VALVE-ACTUATING LEVER FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed April 28, 1920. Serial No. 377,408.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. I, 1318.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, PIERRE JEAN RENE POSTED-VINAY, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 46 Boulevard de la Tour Maubourg, Paris, in the Republlc of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valve-Actuatmg Levers for InternaLCombustion Engines (for which I have filed applications in France,
April 10, 1917; Great Britain, August 24:, 1917; Italy, March 15, 1920, and Germany, March 31, 1920), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of valve actuating lever for internal combustion engines.
In known constructions, the valve stem is pivoted to the oscillating lever which actuates the valve so that in operation, the valve stem is subjected to lateral pressure.
. The above disadvantage is obviated by means of my invention which consists in providing the end of the. actuating lever which acts upon'the valve stem, with a freely pivoted wearing piece adapted to bear upon the valve stem. In operation, said wearing piece is imparted a rocking movement and the valve stem is always pushed in a direction corresponding to its own axis. The
friction between the lever and the valve stem isalso avoided, the wearing piece rolling upon the end of the valvestem.
In the annexed drawing, given by way of example:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a valve actuating lever constructed in accordance with my invention, the wearing piece being removed.
Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a side elevation and an end view of the rocking wearing piece.
Figs. 4: and 5 are respectively, a side elevation partly in section, and a plan View of the improved actuating lever provided with the wearing piece.
Fig. 6 shows a lateral holding plate for the wearing piece.
As shown in the drawing, the actuating lever a is provided at its end which will engage with the valve stem, with a trans verse recess a which receives a somewhat sector shaped wearing piece 6 of casehardened steel. In operation, the arc of said sector will bear and roll on the end of the valve spindle. To hold the piece b in place, it is formed with short trunnions c engaging into apertures provided in side plates 03 which are attached to the sides of the lever by screws or soft rivets so as to close the ends of the recess. The side plates d can be provided with notches d for lubricating purposes.
As will be seen, upon removing the side plate (Z, the wearing piece 6 can easily be removed and replaced by a new one without interfering with the adjustment of the valve mechanism, whilst, in operation, the wearing piece will slightly rock in its recess, its outer surface rolling on the valve spindle end, thus eliminating rubbing.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A valve actuating lever for explosion engines, comprising a lever proper provided with a recess at its operative end, a sector shaped wearing piece adapted to rock freely inside said recess, the inner portion of said wearing piece bearing upon the bottom of said recess, whilst the curved edge in contact with the valve stem is adapted to roll directly on the end of said valve stem, and means for retaining said wearing piece within said recess.
2. A valve actuating lever for explosion engines, comprising a lever proper provided with a recess at its operative end, a sector shaped wearing piece adapted to rock freely .inside said recess, the inner portion of said wearing piece bearing upon the bottom of said recess, whilst the curved edge in contact with the valve stem is adapted to roll directly on the end of said valve stem, said wearing piece being provided with lateral trunnions, side retaining pieces in which said lateral trunnions are pivotally supported, and means for securing said side retaining pieces to the lever.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
PIERRE JEAN RENE POSTEMIINAY.
