-' i i lAt-ihl JAMES M. FALLS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
STORAGE VESSEL.
Application filed June 2 8, 1922. Serial No. 571,419.
To all to]: 0 m it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns M. FALLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville. in the county of. Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storage Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in storage vessels, and. more particularly to a vessel or container adapted for use for storing food. i
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character formed of sheet metal and reinforced so as to render the same very rigid and strong, the reinforcing construction being such that the interior of the vessel is free from cracks and'crevices in which dirt or germs might collect.
larly adapted for the storage of cereals and,
the like, together with a mounting for the vessel whereby the same may be rotated to prevent packing of the contained material, either end of the vessel being provided with a removable closure.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in combination with a container, a support for the container whereby it may be rotated end for end, together with means for locking the container in any desired adjusted position or for locking the container against any movement whatever.
These and other objects I attain by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout.
In the drawings: s
Figure 1 is a plan view of a container constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a detail perspective of one of the locking levers.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a cysheet metal, the ends the When, however, one
lindrical body formed of suitable gauged of the body being rolled back upon the outer surface of the body, as indicated at 11. At suitable intervals the body has formed therein ribs '12,
the structure of which is such that the inner surface of the body is free from'sharp corners, the junction of the ribs with the body being in the form of a curve,as indicated at 1.3. At each end of the body is pivoted a cap or closure 14 which is provided centrally with an offset or raised portion 15 from which radiate ribs 16 formed by pressing the metal ofthe closure. As in the case of the body portion, the junction of these ribs with the body of theclosure 14 is in the form ofa curve to prevent the formation of sharp edges permitting the collection of dirt. The cap or closure is provided at its periphery with a downwardly extending flange 17, the 'lowerend of the flange beingreinforced, as indicated at 18. The caps'or closures ll will be held in closed position by any desired clamping means, such as indicated at 19.
The body is, provided centrally at diametrically opposed points withoutst'anding axles 2O rigidly secured to the body as by means of riveted flanges 21. The numeral 22 indicates a caster supported platform having extending upwardly therefrom supports 23, the upper'ends of which are notched, as indicated at 2-1, for therece r tion of the axles 20, these axles being held in position removable cover plates25. To the ends of each of the axles 20 are secured ratchet wheels 26 and extending outwardly from the side of each of the supports 23 are arms 27 having pivotally mounted thereon pawls 28 for coaction with the ratchet wheels, the pawls being provided with thumb pieces 29 to permit their ready removal. The ratchet wheels 26 have the teeth thereof facing in opposite directions so that when both of the pawls are engaged, movement of the container upon supports is effectually prevented.
of the pawls is withdrawn the container may be rotated in one direction but is held against rotation in the opposite direction. With both pawls withdrawn, free rotation of the container is possible. The pawl and ratchet engagement is employed for holding the container in desired angular position with relation to the platform 22 so that the coniopposite sides thereof a pair of levers and 31, the former being pivoted to the platform at its end. and the latter being pivoted to the platform intermediate its ends. The free end of the lever 30 and one end of the lever 31 are provided with vertical ofi'set' portions 32 of a height suitficient to engage immediately beneath the container cover disposed at the bottom of the container when the same is in the vertical position. To the opposite end of the lever 31 from'that provided with the l'oot 32 and to the lever 30 intermediate its ends, is pivotally connected a link '33, the ends of which extend beyond the sides of the platform 22 and. are provided with downturned portions 3a which may be engaged with the foot. It will be seen that when the levers are disengaged trom the container by engaging the proper end of the link with the footandaprcssing upon the same to shift the link longitudinally, the offsetportions of the levers will be thrown inwardly to engage beneath the container to hold the same against movement lVhenit is desired to again release the container for movement, this maybe accomplished by engaging the opposite end ot the link 33 and movlng the same toward the platform.
I From the foregoing it is believed to be obvious that a container and support therefor constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use in storing food stuffs of the character described for the reason that the container is readily rotatable to release the contained material in case the same becomes packed and for the reason that the container may be secured in any desired angular position or may be held against movement in a vertical position. It will furthermore be ob vious that the construction hereinbefore set forth is capable of some change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of my invention and l accordingly do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
' I claim i 1. In combination, a base, supports extending upwardly from the base, a container pivoted intermediate the supports for end for end rotation, a pair of levers pivotally secured at opposite sides of the l and embodying portions which when th levers are in one position engage the container when in vertical position to lock the same against movement, and a longitudinally shiftable, member connecting the levers for simultaneously shifting the same into or out of engagement with the contamer.
2. In combination with a base, supports extending upwardly from the base, LLGOH- tainer pivoted intermediate the supports tor end for end rotation, a pair of lovers mounted at oppositesides of said base and each provided at one end with an up ardly extending portion adapted to engage the container when the container is in vertical position, one otsaid levers being pivoted to said base iIitGIlllGQltttB its ends and the other of said levers being pivoted to the base at the end thereof remote from its upwardly extending portion, and a link pivotally connected with the first named lever at its end and with the last named lever lnterincdiate its ends.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature.
