Application fileii'February 1 ,1922. Serial No. 537,621
To all whom z't-may concern: I.
Be it known that I, ELorWV. VVENDEL, a citizen of the United States, residing -:at Hinsdale, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder Rests or Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a device for holding a ladder away from an eaves trough or gutter while working on the same, and the object of the invention is the production of a simple and efficient device that can be readlly placed in position and which will efliciently hold the ladder away from the gutter or trough.
WVith this and other objects in view, my
invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same in position for holding a ladder away from a gutter.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 3 is an end view of the device, partly shown in section.
Figure a is an enlarged, sectional view,
taken on line H, Fig. 3, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the bolts.
Figure 6 is a view in side elevation of one of the teeth of the device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a substantially U-shaped frame preferably formed of channel iron, and this frame is provided in its sides with a plurality of vertically-extending, square apertures 2 for receiving the square shanks of bolts 3; the bolts 3 are provided with rounded or comparatively fiat heads so that no material obstruction will be presented when the bolts are in position upon the device.
A transversely-positioned bar 41 is provided with transverse notches 5 for receiving the frame 1, and the bar is provided with square apertures through which the bolts 3 extend, and when the frame and bar are together, with the bolts 3 extending therethrough, 1 butterfly nuts 6' are threaded upon the lower ends of the bolts holding the 'partstogethen 1L1 M a The barflz iswpreferablyz formed of hardwood and is provided-with a plurality-of elongated, strap-receiving apertures 7 in one of these apertures 7 may be placed a strap 8, and the strap may also be placed around run 9 of the ladder 10, so as to hold the cevice in position upon the ladder. Teeth 11 are provided, and each tooth 11 has a flat under-face 12 (F ig.-6)
with a pointed outer end 13 and with a i threaded tongue 14'; the tongue 14 is threaded into the frame 1, with the fiat face 12 near the lower edge of the frame so that the pointed teeth, constituting peculiarly constructed spurs, can slightly penetrate the roof to prevent the device from slipping.
.There is an advantage in making the frame 1 of channel iron since the frame is lighter than if it were solid, and by passing the bolts through the two flanges of the frame (Fig. 4), a very secure fastening is obtained yet the very nature of the channel iron reduces the weight of the structure without decreasing its dur'abilty; further, the forming of the transverse notches 5 upon bar 4 assist in making a very secure connection between the bar and the frame.
lVhile I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture of the same and I, therefore, reserve the right 'to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:
'1. In a device of the class described, the combination ofa frame including side arms, a bar provided with transverse grooves for receiving the arms of said frame, fastening means passing through the grooved portions of the cross bar and through the arms of said frame for holding the bar and frame securely together, and penetrating means on said frame.
2. In a device of the class described, the
tions of the channel iron frame, a bar resting across said frame and having openings adapted to register with said apertures, the portions of said bar having the openings formed therein being recessedfrom their under faces to provide seats for the arms of.
said frame, bolts extending through said bar and through theapertures of the frame, nuts on said bolts securing the bar and frame together, and penetrating means on the frame.v
3. In a ladder support, the combination of a frame having a roof engaging cross strip and side arms, a cross bar releasably connected with and extending between said arms for engagement by the ladder to be supported,
and roof engaging prongs carried by the roof engaging cross strlp and each having its outer end portion bevelled from its upper'to ELOF WALDEMAR WENDEL.
