L. D VANEY MEANS FO R SECURING LOCKS Filed June 18 1923 Patented Sept" 4, 1923.

MEANS FOR SECURING LOCKS.
Application. filed June 18, 1923. Serial No. 646,?08;
To all whom 2'25 may concern.
' Be it known that I, LoUIs DANIEL VANEY, subject of the King of Great'Britain and Ireland, and residing at Lichfield, Hendon Lane, Church End, Finchley, London, England, have invented new and useful Means for Securing Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to animproved method of securing locks and the like in pianoforte cases, drawers, and other fine cabinet work where it is desired to obtain a neat smooth finish.
According to the present invention the lock or latch plate or the equivalent thereof is provided with means upon the surface normally concealed when the lock or latch plate is in position whereby either may be held in position.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into etfect, I have appended hereto one sheet of drawings illustrating same, in which Fig. l is a fragmentary view in section of the keyboard base and cover of a piano illustrating the application of my invention.
Fig. Qis a side elevational view illustrating the combined lock with securing screws detached, the jamb or latch plate being shown in section. 1
Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fi 2.
Figs. 4 and 5 are sectiona side'elevation and inverted plan views respectively of the lock casing.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, the lock casing 1 is closed at its lower end by bending over one or both of the side plates 2 to provide a base 3' upon the upper or inner face of which is slidably mounted a securing plate 45 having a screw threaded hole therein adapted to receive a screw 5 passed upwards through the baseboard 6. so that the actionof threading the screw 5 into the hole will have the effect of drawing the upper plate 7 tightly into the recess prepared for it in the top of the baseboard 6. The base 3 of the locli is formed with an aperture 8 to allow the screw 5 to pass therethrough into the plate 4, such aperture being sufiiciently large to allow the plate 4 to be moved endwise to a sufficient extent to provide a certain amount of latitude with regard to the location of the screw by which the lock is held in position.
' the lock.
I The upper plate of the lock is recessed in the woodwork so as to lie flush therewith in the usual manner, but owing :to the aforementioned method of fitting no screwholes are required and in order to facilitate fitting, I prefer to radius off the ends of this plate to a semi-circular shape. This'will enable the plate to be accurately fitted by cutting the ends of the recess with a suitable bit or rotary cutter of the requisite size.
The latch plate 9 is preferably secured in position in a somewhat similar manner,
its-top plate 10 being recessed as described in the preceding paragraph with regard to The hole 11 for the reception of the retaining screw 12 in this case being located ina substantially U-shaped member 13. The U-shaped member has its ends secured by riveting, soldering or other suitable manner to the back. of the latch plate. Where riveting is employed the heads of the rivets will be finished oif flush with the top surface of the plate 10, the whole surface subsequently preferably being lacquered over. Y
In a method of fitting locks and latch plates according to' my invention. the
'mothod of securing them in position is entirely concealed, and no objectionable screw heads are exposed, thus enabling a very clean and smooth finish to be obtained. lit is also possible to remove the lock or latch plate .tocollect dirt or polish and thus mar the eitect of fine cabinet work.
I claim v 1. Means for securing locks, comprising a lock plate. a securing plate having at least one threaded hole associated with the con vealed portion of the lock plate, at least one screw adapted.v to be screwed into its thread ed hole from the hack of the part in which the lock is located and a plain flange to the face of the lock adapted to be clamped into a recess in the part when the screw is tightened.
2. Means for securing locks comprising a lock plate, side plates, a securing plate hav-' in at least one threaded hole associated with the concealed portion of the lock plate,
turned over edges to the side plates of the cut away to permit movement of the plate without obstructing the threaded hole therein, at least one screw adapted to be screwed into its threaded hole from the back of the part in which the lock is located and a plain flange to the face of the lock adapted to be clamped into a recess in the part when the screw is tightened.
3. Means for securing locks comprising a lock plate, a securing plate having at least one threaded hole associated with the con cealed portion of the lock plate, at least one screw adapted to be screwed into its threaded hole from the back of the part in which the lock is located, a plain flange to the face of the lock adapted to be clamped into a recess in the part when the screw is tightened, and semi-circular ends to the flange to fit a recess whose ends are cut by drilling with a suitable bit.
at. l'leans for securing locks comprising a lock plate, side plates, a securing plate having at least one threaded hole associated with the concealed portion of the lock plate, turned over edges to the side plates of the lock with which the securing plate is slidably engaged, these turned over edges being cutaway to permit movement of the plate without obstructing the threaded holetherein, at least one screw adapted to be screwed into its threaded hole from the back of the part in which the lock is located, a plain flange to the face of the lock adapted to be clamped into a recess in the part when the screw is tightened, and semi-circular ends to the flange to fit a recess whose ends are cut by drilling with a suitable bit.
llleans -for securing locks comprising a lock plate. a securing plate having at least one threaded hole associated with the concealed portion of the lock plate, at least one screw adapted to be screwed into its threaded hole from the back of the part in which the lock is located, a plain flange to the face of the lock adapted to be clamped into a recess in the part when the screw is tightened, a latch plate for the reception of the boltof the lock, a bent strip secured to the back of this latch plate and having at least one hole for at least one concealed screw for securing it in place.
6. Means for securing locks comprising a lock plate, side plates, a securing plate having at least one threaded hole associated with the concealed portion of the lock plate,
turned over edges to the side plates of the lock with which the securing plate is slidably engaged, these turned over edges being cut away to permit movement of the plate without obstructing the threaded hole there in, at least one screw adapted to be screwed into its threaded hole from the back of the part in which the lock is located, a plain flange to the face of the lock adapted to be clamped into a recess in the part when the screw is tightened, a latch plate for the reception of the bolt of the lock, a bent strip secured to the back of this latch plate and having at least one hole for at least one concealed screw-tor securing it in place.
7. Means for securing locks comprising a lock plate, a securing plate having at least one threaded hole associated with the con cealed portion of the lock plate, at least one screw adapted to be screwed into its threaded hole from the back of the part in which the lock is located, a plain flange to the face of the lock adapted to be clamped into a recess in the part when the screw is tightened, semi-circular ends to the flange to fit a recess whose ends are cut by drilling with a suitable bit, a latch plate for the reception of the bolt of the lock, a bent strip secured to the back of this latch plate and having at least one hole for at least, one concealed screw for securing it in place.
8. Means for securing locks comprising a lock plate, side plates, a securing plate having at least one threaded hole associated with the concealed portion of the lock plate, turned over edges to the side plates of the lock with which the securing plate is slidably engaged, these turned over edges being cut away to permit movement of the plate without obstructing the threaded. hole there in, at least one screw adapted to be screwed into its threaded hole from the back of the part in which the lock is located, a plain flange to the face of the lock adapted to be clamped into a recess in the part when the screw is tightened, semi-circular ends to the flange to fit a recess whose ends are cut by' drilling with a suitable bit, a latch plate for the reception of the bolt of the lock, a bent strip secured to the back of this latch plate and having at least one hole for at least one concealed screw for securing it in place.
