To all whom t may concern,
Be it known that I, BoUeH'roN T. NOBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and .State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Forming Bolts; and I do hereby declarey the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying. drawings and -the l@ characters of reference marked thereon, to
showmg the position of the dies at the completion of the bolt-forming operation.

rIhis invention relates to an improvement in method of forming bolts, and by the term bolts, as herein used, I wish to be understood as including bolts, rivets,.studs,
or devices for similar purposes.
The dbject of this invention is to form a bolt f om a piece of stock smaller in diamfzto eter than the diameter of the finished bolt,
leaving the end to be threaded of the original diameter of the stock, and then rolling threads on the unenlarged portion so as to bring the diameter of the threads e ual to e5 the diameter of the body of the bo t, and
the invention consists in the method as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim. l
In carrying out my invention I employ a pair of upsetting-dies 10 and 11, provided in their adjacent faces with semi-circular grooves 12 and 13, together forming an opening correspondin mainly to the diameter of the shank of t e bolt to be formed.
The rear faces of the upsetting-dies 10 and 55 11 are formed with pockets 23 and 24 to receive springs 25 and 26, which are -seated in pockets 27 and 28 of backing- dies 29 and 30, the adjacent faces of which are formed with grooves 31 and 32, corresponding to the size of the wire blank 33 from which the bolt is to be formed and `with a flaring mouth. The stock or blank 33, from which the bolt is to be formed, is fed between the backing-dies and the upsetting-dies, While there is a space between them maintained by the springs 25 and 26, the length of the. blank being such that it will not only extend through the two pairs of dies and the space between them, but projects beyond the upsetting-dies sufficiently to furnish material for the head 21 and a part of theshank 20. The two pairs of dies arethen brought together to grip the stock between the backing dies. The dies are then moved into line with the usual heading punch 34, which crowds the upsetting-dies against the back- -ing-dies, upsetting the blank, so as to till the recesses 12 and 13 from opposite ends,
and, at 4the-same time, form the head 21. 80
'If necessary, a second blow of the punchmay be given upon the stock to fully complete the forming operation, which, however, is substantiall performed by a single blow. After the bo t is formed, the dies are separated, the bolt ejected, and another piece of stock fed in its lace,-all as usual in the manfacture of bo ts and similar articles used in bolt-forming machines. The end of the blank ma then be rolled to form threads 22 which will bring the diameter of this end of the bolt. equal to the diameter of the body portion of the bolt.
I thus produce, by practically one operation, a bolt blank having its main portion of a diameter larger than the diameter of the stock from which is is formed. The dies for forming bolts, etc., above disclosed, are not claimed herein, but are made the subject of a separate application, filed June 26,1922, Serin N o. 571,023. l
I claim:
