To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, OSCAR A. SMITH and Gnoncn J. Leena, both citizens of the United ,States, said SMITH residing at East'Cleveland and said Lnnnn at Cleveland, both in the county of Cuyahoga and Stateof Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Operating Mecha nism, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to transom oper ating mechanism, and has to do particularly with the provision of improved and novel means for raising and lowering transoms, such as roof sections of factory buildings, whereby efficient, effective and facile operation may be obtained in conjunction with simplicity of mechanism and economy of manufacture.
The main disadvantage and objection to transom operating devices heretofore constructed, and in commercial use, especially where such devices are utilized in connection with saw-tooth roof buildings wherein the transorns used are often from 20 to 60 feet long, and of great weight, arises from the fact that inasmuch as the power mechanism is placed at one end of the transom or roof section to be raised, and from which point by means of levers or rods connected by a shaft parallel with the transom the heavy transom or roof section is raised, there is always considerable torsion and weaving. This is due to the fact that the direct lifting power is not efiiciently distributed over the whole transom. that the weight directed at various points is not absorbed by the proper and effective leverage, and that the appara tus and mechanism lacks the proper fiexibility.
It is an object of'this invention to do away with these disadvantages and to provide a transom operating mechanism which will not only distribute the lifting power at various points but will also provide the neces sary leverage and flexibility in the apparatus.
Other objects of this invention will appear in the ensuing description thereof, reference being hLClytO the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,

I r 7 My invention is particularly adapted for use in factory plants wherein the transoms or roof sections to be raised-and lowered are often of unusual length and weight, although it is to be understood thatmy improved mechanism may be employed in any desired manner. In the present case the roof section 2 having the framework 3 is provided with a transom 4 of any-suitable length as illus-' 'trated in Fig. 1. At a suitable distance from the top of the transom 4c is secured a bracket 6 and adjacent the top of the roof section 2 are also secured brackets 5 to which the transom is hinged. Housed in a suitable number of bearings 7 secured to the frame and running parallel with the transom is the main operating shaft 8. To the upper end of each screw is keyed a. mitre gear 12 is mesh with gear 10. Due to the swinging connection of the forkedbracket?) the operating or lifting screw 11 has a swinging movement about the axis of the shaft 8. In other words, the upper end of the screw is pivoted, while the lower end is'free to swing. Mounted on the lifting screw!) is a lifting nut 13 adapted to have a shiftable movement longitudinally thereof. Each nut 13 is provided with slotted wing portions atopposite sides thereof, to which, by means of pivot pins are pivoted a plurality of lifting members, comprising in 'the present case, a movable link 14. pivoted to the bracket 6 of the transom and a swinging link 15 having a stationary or relatively-fixed pivotal connection as at 16 to a portion of the i roof section.

Suitable operating means for the shaft 18 is provided comprising in the present instance hand wheel 21 secured toastub shaft 22 rotatably mounted in the housing "T he lower end of the shaft 18 is suitably j ournaled in the housing 23 and is provided with a ge'ar'2eimeshing with a gear 25 at the inner end of the stub shaft 22. In case the operating wheel 21 is not installed directly below the bracket 17, the shaft 18 maybe made in a suitable number of sections connected together by means of universal joints 26, as illustrated in 1.
. In operation, it will be seen that by operating the hand-wheel 21, shaft-s 18 and 8 will be rotated, thus rotating the swinging lifting screws 11 whereupon the nuts 13 will .be shifted longitudinally thereof, withthem the inner ends of the lifting members 14: and 15.
In this operation, each member or'link 15 having a fixed pivotal connection 16 at its outer end, has a swinging' or sidewise movement which is imparted to each lifting screw 11,-thus causing the same to have a swinging movement in a planetary direction. During its operation,
furthermore, as each nut is shifted up wardly the lift-ingscrew, each lever or 'link 14 will he bodily shifted or moved up wardly, that is, have an endwise movement, thus lifting the transom 41-; Upon rotating the hand wheel 21 in the opposite direction, the reverse operation takes place and the transom 4 is lowered to its'closed position.
Although we have described a preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the exact details of the construction de scribed only in so far as defined in the appended claims, and included within the screw for opening and closing the transom,
