Application filed May 8, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRnDRIoK A. HEN- DRICKSON, citizen of Canada, residing at ltevelstoke, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Lever Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention provides for the manipulation of a lever by foot instead of the hand and is of particular advantage in the operaiion of a. railroad ditcher which usually has three control levers, one for the hoistir'lg throttle, a second for the swinging throttle and a third for the boom engine throttle. Changing from one lever to the other fre qucntly results in confusion and delay which is obviated by the present invention since two of the levers are operable by hand and the third by foot, thereby enabling the machine to be operated faster and without confusion and resulting in more and better work in a given time. 7
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
Vi hile the drawing illustrates an embodi-- V ment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from thenature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a front view of lever provided with a foot operating attachment en'n 1 designates the lever which Serial No. 559,492.
it is desired to be operated by foot and which ordinarily is. manipulated by hand. In the present instance the lever 1 is dcsigned to operate the boom engine. In accordance with this invention the lever-'1 is shortened and is provided at its upper end witha longitudinal slot 2.
The foot attachment comprises rest 3 which is approximately ofcircular form and constructed of a length of round iron bent into the shapesubstantially as shown. A. plate 4 is welded o-rlotherwiseattached to a portion of the rest 3 and is formed with openings 5 to receive fastenings such as bolts whereby it is adjustably attached to the slotted end of the lever 1. Eye bolts 6 are attached to the rest 3 at opposite sides of the opening formed by omitting a portion thereof. The eyes or openings ofthe parts 6 are elongated vertically and receive a strap 7 which is adjustable by means of a buckle.
whereby to secure the foot when inposition, The rest 3 is adapted to'rcceive the heel portion of the shoe worn by the operator and the strap 7 engages the heel portion of the shoe thereby preventing slipping of the foot and enabling the lever 1 to bepositively. operated in each direction for opening and closing the throttle as required. The rest 23 engages the front and sides of the heel thereby preventing forward displacement of the foot whereas the strap 7 engages the rear of the heel and prevents rearward displacement of the foot.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A lever attachment comprising a foot rest adapted to receive the heel of a shoe, spaced eyebolts projecting upwardly from the foot rest and having the eyes elongated vertically and a heel strap engaging the elongated eyes of said bolts.
2. A footattachment for levers comprising a rest of approximately circular form having a portion in the rear omitted, at-
taching elements at the ends of the rests bordering upon the openings formed .by emitting a portion thereof and a heel strap connected to the rest by means of said, attaching element.
g a rest of a-pioroximately circular form In testimony whereof I afilx my signature 111 presence 0t two Witnesses.
3. A foot attachment for levers comprishaving a portion 1n the rear omitted, an attaching plate at one side of the rest, eye bolts applied toend portions of the rest 1d= jecent the rear opening thereofi and a heel strap applied to the eye bolts.
