Be it known that I, ELGAN SAMUEL SLoAN, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shippenville, in the count of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have irventeijl certain new and useful Improvements 1n Pumping Powers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to power transmitting devices and more particularly to what is known in the oil well art as pumping powers.
In the pumping powers now in use, the main shaft is comparatively short and con-- sequently, the great strain incident to the operation of the apparatus in hilly countries and where the work is not always at right angles to the shaft greatly decreases the life of the bearings and the associated parts of the apparatus.
It is therefore an important object of this invention to provide a pumpingpower which employs an extremely heavy base into which is rotatably extended the main shaft and it is desirable to have the main shaft somewhat lone; and surrounded by a suitable number of relatively stationary bearings so that the leverage cannot exert an excessive friction and thereby decrease the life of the bearings.
One of the principal features of this invention resides in providing novel and reliable means whereby the oil which is conveyed to the main bevel gear may be returned to the small oil receiver which suppliesthe power transmitting pinion with lubricant.
Also, the invention aims to provide a pun'iping power wherein the lubricant carried thereby and the moisture in the lubricant may be drained off as the occasion requires.
Also, a further object is to provide simple and reliable means whereby the oil.surround 'ing the main shaft may be withdrawn for the purpose of replacement. I I
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course ofthe following description. l
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like 5 parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 1s a] vertical sectional view through the improved power transmitting apparatus,
Serial No. 558,323.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, parts being mcnt of the invention. the numeral 5 designates a bed preferably formed from concrete and being of sufficient size and strength to withstand the strain incident to the use of the apparatus. The concrete bed or founda tion 5 1s preferably relnforced as'indicated In carrying out the invention, a. drive shaft 8 is mounted upon the top of the bed 5 and is rotatably extended through a pair oi ahned cap bearings 9 and between the Jcap bearings I have provided a pinion 10 which meshes with a main gear 1.1. As illustrated in Fig. l, the main gear 11 is beveled and is keyed upon a main vertically arranged shaft 12 to which upper and lower eccentrics l3 and 14: are connected. The eccentrics 13 and 14- have connection with a suitable number of well pumps and when the main shaft 12 is rotated the reciprocating members of the pumps will of course be operated, all of which is old and well known in the art.
The main shaft 12 is extended downwardly into a socket in the bed 5 and is roiatably passed through upper and lower bearings 16 and 19 respectively, the upper bearing 16 being carried by a casting or metal frame 18. The upper bearing 16 is as illustrated in Fig. 4, provided with longitudinally extending internal grooves 20 through which the oil may flow for main iaining the main shaft in a well lubricated conditions The upper side ofthe frame or. casting 18 is cupped as indicated at 21. for the reception of oil which flows through the upper hearing by means of the oppositely arranged grooves 20.
The upper bearing 16 is supported by the shoulder 23 formed on the upperportion of a tubular member 2% which constitutes the reservoir for the reception of a quantity of oil.
The lower portion of the main shaft 12 is somewhat reduced, as indicated at 26, and is extended through the lower bearing 19 which is carried by a casting or frame 27 are arranged between the base plate 28 and the lower end ofthe main shatt. The thrust plates 30 may be renewed as the same wear and in this manner the vertical shaft 152 may at all times be maintained in its proper position.
Furthermore, the thrust plates 30 may be provided with centrally arrangegl openings to aline Wltl'i the centrally arranged opening orwpassage ,in.the base 28 so that oil from. p t 11611151111 reservoir may enter the 1nlet'mem her 34- ot' a pump 35. The pump 35 extends out through the upper side of the bed 5 and forms a convenient means whereby the oil may be withdrawn from themain reservoir.
It is understood, of course, that oil may be.
supplied to. themain reservoir defined by thetuhular member 24 through the cup 21.
In carrying out the invention. the apparatus, and more particularly the concrete bed of they same, may be strengthened and reinforced by bars eel-threaded as indicated at 41 into the frame or casting 18. the bars-40 is threaded intoa lateral projection 4-2 of the casting' liland it is upon .this projection 42 that, one of the cap bearinpgs 9 is mounted.
Attention. is directedto the fact that the top of the bed 5 is provided directly beneath the bevel gear 11 with an annular qroove 60 which is inclined downwardly toward the oil receiver 61 directly beneath the pinionlO.
That is to say. theannula-r groove (30 is of an increased depth directly beneath the.
pinion. 10 so that the pinion 10 will at all timesoperate in oil. The-oil picked up by the pinion .10 and supplied to the teeth or the bevel gearll is dropped into the annular troughaor groove (it) and flows hackinto the receiver 61.
Theoil. may be drained. from the receiver 61 atan time b means ota drain ii ie tii which as illustrated in Fig. is provided with a control valve 64:. In operation, it,;willbe apparent that power transmitting device apparatus con structed in accordance with this invention is possessed of the strength necessary to with, stand the strains, incident to use and particularlyithebearings 16 and 19 are notzrap ,idly w'ornhy the strain on the main shaft 12. hilly country 1 or when the pull is not right anglesto the eccentrics,-ihe strain on the Frequently when operating in main shaft causes the hearings-to get out of alinement and thebearinn s are soon worn One of and become unfit for further use. However, in the use of this invention, the rapid wearing of the bearings is overcome and the unusual length of the main shaft 12 and the strength of the bed hold the shaft properly in position and eliminates excessive vibration.
Also, an adequate supply of oil is maintained through all the moving parts at all times which contributes greatly to the wear-- inequalities of theapparatus.
