Application filed may 5, W281. serial No. ceases.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I THoMAs L. TALIA- rnnno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Polish Boxes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked t ereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a shoe polish box, and more particularly to a shoe polish box which may be readily opened by means of a coin or other suitable instrument.
An object of the invention is to provide a box which is very simple in construction and which can be cheaply made, and wherein the projecting ribs which are used for separating the cover from the bod portion of the box are held spaced a de nite distance apart by the shaping and forming of the lower edge portion of the cover.
In the draw1ngs:
Figure l is a side view of a shoe polish box having my improvements embodied therein;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional the box;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through a portion of the box, and
Fig. 4: is an enlarged top plan view of a portion of the box.
In carrying out the invention, I have provided a shoe polish box which is made in two pieces, a body portion formed of one integral piece of metal and a cover formed of a second integral piece of metal. The body portion at a short distance below its upper edge is bent so as to provide a horizontal outwardly extending rib. The cover engages the portion of the box above said rib and said cover is'rolled at its lower edge outwardly and upwardly to form a projecting bead or rib, and the lower edge of said cover at spaced intervals is rolled to a less extent whereby downwardly projecting lugs are formed which engage the rib on the body portion of the box when the cover is placed on the box, and holds the ribs on the cover and body portion of the box spaced so as to permit the insertion of a coin or other instrument for prying off the cover.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, my improved box consists of a body portion 1 and a cover 2. Said body portion 1 is view through formed as above noted, of a single piece of metal which is bent to form a horizontally outwardly, extendin rib 3. Said rib is flattened at the upper ace thereof as indicated at 4: so as to provide a substantially horizontal flat surface, or a flat surface which is parallel with the plane of the outer edge of the body portion of the box. The cover is shaped so that its depending wall fits the outer wall of the body portion above the rib 3 and frictionally grips the same so as to hold the cover on the box. The extreme lower edge of the cover is rolled outwardl and upwardly so as to form a bead or rib 5. The under face of this bead or rib 5 is flattened as indicated at 6. This enables the ribs 3 and 5 to be relatively close together and at the same time permit the insertion of a coin of sufiicient diameter and thickness so that by turning the coin in the well-known way, the ribs may be pried apart, and thus the cover pried ofi from the body ortion of the box. Tn order to insure t at the ribs 3 and 5 will be spaced a sufiicient distance to permit the insertion of the coin for the purpose stated, the lower edge of said cover at spaced intervals is rolled upwardly to a less extent thus forming relatively narrow spacing lugs 7, 7, preferably four in number, which lugs are adapted face of the rib 3 and thus positively ho ds the rib 5 spaced from the rib 3. In other words, the cover cannot be forced on to the body portion of the box but what there is ample space between the ribs 3 and 5 to permit the insertion of the coin or other tool for the prying ofi" of the cover. It is to be noted that these lugs 7, 7 are comparatively short in length and this leaves a relatively wide space between adjacent lugs so that the instrument for on a shoe polish box, to engage the up er prying ed the cover may...
be applied at several points between thel lugs, and the cover thus more quickly lifted.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described the present invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
A shoe polish box, comprising a body ortion havin an outwardly pro ecting ii in the side wa 1 thereof, the said rib being disposed at a distance below the upper edge oil said side wall, and a cover for frictionally invention engaging the body portion of the box above said rib, said cover having its lower edge rolled outwardly and upwardly to form a projecting strengthening rib, said edge at spaced intervals being rolled to a less extent whereby relatively narrow downwardly projecting spacing lugs are formed adapted to engage the projecting rib on the body portion of the box and hold the rolled lower edge of the cover a spaced distance from said projecting rib on the body portion of enace the box, whereby the main frictional grip of the cover on the body portion is a slight distance away from the projecting rib on said body portion where the metal is more flexible and thereby the cover may be more readily removed from the body of the box by a tool inserted between the projecting ribs for prying off the cover.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
