To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. Gonns'rnm, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State ofNew York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Buttonhole-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of. the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
This invention has to do with machines for cutting buttonholes in or otherwise perforating fabric and similar material,.such, for example, as are used in the manufacture of clothing, the chief object of the invention being to provide a simple, practical and efiicient machine of this character which is compact and strong in construction, readily adjustable to suit the requirements of the work and convenient and rapid in operation. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

The embodiment of the inventionherein disclosed is intended merely by wayof illustration of the principles involved and a preferred practical application thereof, comprising a supporting column l0rhaving a flanged lower end 11 adapted to rest on and be secured to the floor, the upper end of the column being formed with upwardly eXtending spaced arms 12 connected at their upper ends by a cross piece 13 to which is secured as by means of bolts 14- a cross piece 15 preferably of wood. Pieces 13 and 15 together form a horizontal shelf to which is secured, as hereafter described, a frame 16, Figure 3. The latter comprises a U-shaped portion or yoke 17 having an upper arm 18 resting on the upper side of the shelf or cross piece 15 and a lower arm 19 extending forwardly between the column arms 12 and under the shelf or cross piece 13, having threadedly carried therein a clamping screw 20 for en gagement with the under side of the shelf to detachably but firmly secure thereto the said frame 16.
Frame 16 which carries most of the op crating parts comprises also a pair of rearwardly extending spaced ears 21 through which is passed a spindle 22, Figures 3 and 4:, on which is pivotally supported a lever 23 having a forwardly extending end 24: projecting over the top of the column. The lever end 2 1 is formed on one side, Figures 5 and 6, with a depression 25 receiving a cutting plate or knife 26 having a straight horizontal cutting edge 27 projecting outwardly 0r downwardly from the lever. The cutting plate is clamped to the lever by means of spaced screws 28 passing through openings in the plate larger than the screw to permit of adjustment of the cutting edge. The plate is backed up or supported at its top by spaced, vertically extending, adjusting screws 29, one over each of the screws 28. It is apparent from this construction that the cutting edge may be adjusted relative to the leverby means of screws 29 and securely clamped in place by means of screws 28. The lever end preferably carries also a screw 30 extending vertically downward through the same and formed at its lower end with a circular cutting edge located at the inner end of the straight cutting edge 27 and adapted to remove a portion of the fabric so as to cut an eyelet at one end of the slit cut in the fabric by the straight cutting edge 27 as desired in cutting a buttonhole. The eyelet cutting edge is also vertically adjustable by turning the screw 30 and this and the cutting edge 27 are of course adjusted even with each other and together form an efficient tool means for the purpose described.
The means cooperating with the cutting edges or tool means described above on the opposite side of the fabric comprises preferably a spindle 32, Figure 5, supported at its inner end by threaded engagement with an opening in a shoulder of the arm of the frame, the outer end of the spmdle be ng supported in an upwardly extending bracket secured at its lower end by means of a screw 3% on the arm 18. Rotatably carried on spindle 32 adjacent the outer and inner ends thereof, respectively, are sleeves and 36. Slidably supported at its outer end on the sleeve 35 and fixed at its other end to the sleeve 36, as by means of a driving lit therebetween, is a drum 37 provided on its periphery with a series of longitudinally extending )rojections'or cutting faces the cutting faces 38 extend from the inner end of the drum to different distances toward its opposite end and occupy but a portion of the periphery f the drum, the remainder of which is occupied by a similar series of shoulders 39 extending from the opposite end of the drum different distances inwardly toward its inner end. The shoulders 38, of which in the present instance there are SIX, and the shoulders 39, of which there are two, are disposed at equal distances from the center of the drum and are preferably equally spaced about its periphery, and it is ap; parent that by the rotatable ad ustment or the drum these different cutting faces may be brought selectively into position for cooperation individually with the cuttin edges 27 carried by the lever 23. The cutting'edge 27 is of substantially the lehgth of the maximum buttonhole slit ordinarily required and the series of cutting faces cooperate with the desired proport onal length of this cutting edge at its lnne'r end and with the eyelet cutting tool 31 to form a slit of the desired length with an opening at one end. lhe series of cutting faces 39 cooperate in a similar manner with the other end of cutting edge 2'? thereby producing such slits of different lengths but without a corresponding end opening or eyelet. Of course any number of cuttmg faces desn'el may be provided in either of these series.
A retaining means is provided for holding'rdrum 87 in adjusted position with a selected cut-ting face in position for cooperation with the cutting edges, comprising preferably, a radially extending flange -10, Figure 5, formed 011 the end of sleeve 36 and having therein a series of spaced recesses, one corresponding to each of the cutting faces. Cooperating with these recesses is a pin 42 on arm 18 ofthe frame. A spring 43 coiled about spindle 32 and hearing at its ends against the collars 35 and 36 serves to normally slide drum 37 inwardly of the spindle to engage pin32 with the recessel corresponding to the cutting space in operating position, and it is apparent that the drum may be conveniently moved by hand outwardly against the tension of the spring to disengage the retaining means for selectively adjusting the drum after which the latter is moved inwardly by the spring to reengage the retaining means and hold the drum in adjusted position;
Lever 23 is actuated to effect the cutting of the material by means hereafter described connected with its opposite end 44:, and to prevent undue pressure of the cutting edges against the cutting faces there is preferably provided a stop means comprising pin l?) projecting from the lever and provided with a friction reducing roller operating in an arcuate slot 4:6 in one of the cars 21 so that as the lever is swung to bring the cutting edges against the cutting faces, stop 45 striking the end of slot 4C6 prevents the impact of the cutting parts with excessive force, the latter being of course suitably adjusted with reference to the stop means.
, The end 44 of lever 23 has pivotally attached thereto an actuating connection carried on the frame 16 and comprising a link 47, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected with one arm of a bell crank lever 48 pivotally supported as at d9 on frame'l6 to the other arm of which is pivotally attached the upper end of a pull rod 50. The rod is preferably provided between its ends with a length adjusting turnbuckle 51 and the opposite or lower end of the pull rod is pivotally connected as at 52 with the intermediate portion of'a foot actuated lever or treadle 53, the forward end of which is pivo-tally supported at 54 between spaced lugs 55 on the bottom flange 11 of the supporting column. A spring 56 secured to the treadle extends upwardly within the column and is attached thereto at its upper endand serves to hold the treadle normally in elevated position with the end of lever 23 raised to separate the cutting elements. This end of lever 23 and the drum 87 form in effect a pair of opposing jaws with an throat therebetween into which the work may be conveniently inserted. the treadle actuating means leaving both hands of the operator free to manipulate the work. A gauge is preferably provided, Figures 3 and to limit the depth of the throat between the cutting parts, comprising preferably an L-shaped bar 57, one arm of which extends transversely of the throat level with the position of the material. The other arm of the gauge bar slides in a slot 58 cut in the side of one of the ears 21 of the frame so that the gauge'm ay be adjusted inwardly and outwardly of the throat to guide the location of the work. A clamping screw 59 is provided in the frame having a flange overlapping the gauge bar for clamping the latter in adjusted position.
7 As some operators accomplish better'results by feeding the work toward the body and into the jaws of the machine, or in other words, with the parts of the latter arranged as shown in Figures 1 and 2, while other operators secure better results by feed-' ing the work away from the body, or in other words, with the jaws of the machine on the same side ofthe latter as the treadle, the frame 16 is made detachable from the col umn as described, and may be fastened to the latter from either side, thus reversing the direction of opening of the jaws. In the arrangement shownin Figures 1 and 2, pull rod 50 passes into the column for connection with the treadle through a slot located. at 50 in the column, and the latter is provided as shown in Figure 2 with a slot 51 on its opposite side, so that the actuating connections between the treadle and the jaws may be reversed with a reversal of the frame,
As apparent from the drawings the machine is self contained and compact in arrangement and so constructed that while the frame 16 with the operating parts is rigidly secured to the column 10 so that it may be located and supported in any desired position on the floor, the frame and operating parts may, however, be detached from the column and reattached thereto on its opposite side to suit the convenience of the operator and the work in hand. The construction is also simple, practical and inexpensive in character and the cutting drum is firmly supported at both ends on the frame and is easily adjusted for the length and. kind of button hole desired. Also the cutting edges may be readily adjusted or extended and re tracted relative to the lever carrying the same and the stop 45 effectively protects the cutting edges and surfaces against injury by the application of excessive pressure. The actuating connections for lever 23 comprising link 47 and lever 48 provide in effect a toggle action requiring but a light pressure on the treadle, and it is to be noted that the force applied through the latter to the operating parts on the frame iS downwardly in direction so as to have the least tendency to vibrate frame 16 or work the same loose on its supports. The construction and arrangcment of various parts moreover affords a large degree of convenience for the operator, facilitating the rapid accomplishment of the desired work.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combinationof a frame, a part movably carried thereby provided with a cutting edge, means for adjusting said cutting edge on said part, a drum on said frame having a plurality of'cutting surfaces. of different lengths and adjustable to bring said surfaces selectively to position for cooperation with said cutting edge, retaining means for holding said drum in adjusted. position, foot actuated means effecting cutting movement of said part relative to said drum, and a positive stop limiting the cut ting movement of said part. 2. The combination of a frame, a lever positively carried thereby and having a plurality of independently adjustable cut-- ting edges, an element adjustable on said frame to bring a plurality of cutting surfaces of different lengths selectively to position for cooperation with said cutting edges, retainin means for holding said element in adjusted position, foot actuated m ans effecting cutting movement of said lever toward said drum, a positive stop limiting said cutting movement. and a spring for moving said lever in the opposite direction. The combination of a frame. a part thereon having a cutting edge. a spindle on the frame, a drum rotatable and longitudinally sliclable on said spindle, detent means on said drum and frame comprising a pro iection on one and a plurality of cooperating recesses on the other adapted to be engaged by longitudinal movement of the drum inone direction to hold said drum in rotatably'adjusted position. a spring normally holding said detent means in engagement, a plurality of cutting faces on said drum extending longitudinally from an end thereof different distances for cooperation with different proportions of said cutting edge. and actuating means effecting relative cutting movement of said part and drum.

The combination of a frame, a lever pivoted thereon provided with a cutting tool, a .druni rotatably adjustable on said frame to bring a plurality of cutting faces of different lengths selectively to position for cooperation with said tool. a supportingcolumn having a lower end adapted to rest on the floor and provided at its upper end with ashelf. means carried by said frame for detachably securing the same to either side of said shelf in relatively reversed positions, a treadle on said column. a pull rod connected with the latter, actuating connections on said frame between said lever and pull rod effecting cutting movement of said lever relative to said drum upon downward movement of said pull rod, and spring 'means for moving said parts in the opposite direction.

The combination of a frame, a lever pivoted thereon provided with a cutting tool, a drum rotatably adjustable on said frame to bring a plurality of cutting faces of different lengths selectively to position for cooperation with said tool, a supporting column having a lower end adapted to rest on the floor and an upper end adapted for connection with said frame, means carried ness oso by said frame for detachably securing the same selectively to opposite sides of said column, a treadle on the latter and a connection between said treadle and said lever to operate the same.

The combination of a frame, a lever pivoted thereon provided with a cutting tool a drum, rotatably adjustable on said frame to bring a plurality of cutting faces of differentlengths selectirely to position for cooperation with said tool, a supporting column having a lower end adapted to rest on the floor and provided at its upper end with spaced upwardly extending arms a cross member supported at its ends on said arms, means carried by said frame for de tachably securing the same to the cross member on either side of the latter and of the column, a treadle on said column and aconnection between said treadle and lever to 20 operate the same: 7
