F. REGERO FOUNTAI N PEN Filed Aug. 14 1922 Nw wm www mei! e.,
' Application filed August 111-, 19
To @ZZ whom may eminemv Be it known 'that L FRANK Ricamo, e eil-izen of the United Ste-tes, residing at Manent, in the county of Bibl) and Starte of Georgian lieve invented o1' discovered `eeiinin new and useful improvements in Founiein Pens, of which the following is e speoilieetion, i'e'feienee being had tlieiein to die eccoinpanying1 drawing.
This invention eletes to so-eellefl selfilling fountain pens, and consists in eei1-v min lmpiovements 1n lie fountain pen Coveed by my Peent No. 1,3989800 cleecl liovembei 29, 1921. ln the consirueiion shown in my said patent `glie Valve Wliieli eneliles the inli: oli-ambei of tile pen zo be filled 'when elle pump oi' piston sleeve is drawn ont, is opened snol elosecl loy longgi- 'budiniil movements of e Valve sleeve; in lille piesent eonsti'uction this opening @nel elening of 1Elie Valve sleeve is effected ley s, pen tiel roiery movement tlie'eo lin ine, accompanying' enel 2 sie seesionzil views of onn in pen embodying; elle piesent nweniizien9 me pens in different posii'ziens in the two views.

To make a tight joint at the outer end of the ink chamber within the outer casing l part'12, a bushing 27 of' cork or other suitH able material is tightlvfittedwitliin said casing contiguous to the sleeve 24, and said bushing is preferably retained in place, against inward movement, by a washer 28 of hard rubber or other suitable material abutting against a shoulder at 12L formed on said casing part.
To fill the pen the cap legis unscrewed from the casing 12 and the piston or pump sleeve 21 is then unlocked from the holding sleeve 24 by a partial rotation of the `knob 2'1), causing the ends of the locking pin 26 to register with the longitudinal parts of the bayonet joint slots 25. This partial rotation of* the said knob and the piston or pump sleeve therewith closes the valve ai,- orded by the openings 16 and 18 in the parts 15 and 17,. and the piston or pump sleeve 21 is then drawn out to lill the ink chamber oi the'pen.
ln thus filling said ink chamber the ink flows into the chamber of the pistonorpump sleeve 21, and thence into the chamber oi the casing 12. When the said piston oi' pump 21 is'iiorced inward more or less air escapes `through the tube` I 15L communicating with the chamber of the pen-holding part 18 and 'the inlet and outlet with which said part 13 is provided.
Fromthe foregoing it will be understood that the present invention aliiords an improved eonstruetion of the valve' and valveoperating devices which are-deemed to be preferable to the constructions showii in my said Patent No. 1398,800, hereinbefore referred to.
Having thus described my invention I claim and 'desire to secure .by Letters Patent:
l. In a fountain pen, the combination with an outer casing ali'ording an ink chamber, of a valve comprising two sleeves provided with openings, one of said sleeves being fixed relative to the pen-holding member and the other being rotatable on said fixed sleeve to enable said openings to registerwith each other, when desired, a piston sleeve slidingly mounted within said easing, and means whereby said valve may be opened or closed by a partial rotation of said piston sleeve.
2. ln a fountain pen, the combination with an outer easing affording an ink chainber, of a sleeve fixed within said vcasing and provided with one or more openings, a rotatable valve sleeve mounted on said fixed sleeve and also provided with one or more openings which maybe caused to register with the opening orl openings in said fixed sleeve, said valve sleeve having side projecinname tions, a piston sleeve tted to slide within said casing and'liaving a closed outer end, said piston sleeve having means adapted to engage the said projections to enable said valve sleeve to be partially rotated by said piston sleeve, and means for locking said piston sleeve against longitudinal movement.
3,1n-a fountain pen, the combination with an outer casing affording an ink chainber, of a sleevel xed within said casing -and provided with one or more openings,
tated by said piston sleeve, and means tor locking said piston sleeve against longitudinal movement, said locking sleeve consisting of a sleeve fixed to said outer casing and provided with a bayonet joint slot or slots, and one or more pins, connected with said piston sleeve and `adapted to enter said slot or slots. e
ln a fountain pen, the combination with an outer casing affording lan ink chamber, 'ot a valve comprising two sleeves provided' with openings7 one of saidsleeves being iiired relative to the pen-holding member and the other of said sleeves being rotatable on said hired sleeve to enable the valve to be opened and closed, a piston sleeve slidingly mounted within said casing, means whereby said valve may be opened and closed by'a partial rotation of said piston sleeve, and means for locking said piston sleeve against longitudinal movement. y
5. In a fountain pen, the combination with an outer easing affording anink chamber, of a valve comprising two sleeves pro- -vided with openings, one of said sleeves being rotatively mounted on the other to enable thevalve to be opened and closed, a
with an outer casing affording an ink chain-P ber, et a valve comprising two sleeves provided. with openings, one of said sleeves belil() ing rotatively mounted'on the other to enable the valve to be opened and closed, a piston sleeve slidingly mounted within said casing, means whereby said valve may be opened and closed by a partial rotation of said piston sleeve, means for looking said piston sleeve against longitudinal movement, said locking means comprising a sleeve screwed into the outer end of said Casing and pro'ided with a circumferential flange and with a bayonet joint slot or slots, said piston sleeve being provided' with a knob closing its outer end, one or more pins carried by said knob and entering' said slot or slots, and a cap fitted to the outer end of said locking sleeve and aording a housing for said knob.
7. ln a fountain pen, the oombination with an outer casing aording an ink chamber, of a valve comprising two sleeves provided with openings, one of said sleeves be-4 ing rotatively mounted on the other to en able the valve to be opened and closed, a piston sleeve slidingly mounted within said casing, means whereby said Valve may be opened and closed by a partial rotation of said piston sleeve, means for locking said piston sleeve against longitudinal moveu ment, a packing bushing within said oasing Contiguous to said locking sleeve, and means for preventing said bushing from being displaced inwardly in said casing.
In testimony whereof ll aix my signa= ture.
FRANK REGJERO.
