To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HAROLD MAX BRUM- MER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment securing Straps, of'which the following is a specification. i

This invention relates to garment securing straps, and more particularly to knee straps for mens and boys knickerbocker trousers, and has special reference to the provision of an improved adjustable and quickly manip-ulable securing strap.

In the manufacture of knickerbocker trousers or bloomers, for the purpose of providing a trouser leg bottom which can be adjusted to fit the leg of the wearer, it is common to provice a knee band or strap, the fitting of which about the leg of the wearer is made adjustable by means of buckle fas tening provisions which usually consists of a buckle attached to the band, the said buckle receiving a free flap usually formed integrally with the strap or band at an end thereof. These buckle fastening straps, although providing for the desired adjustability, are found objectionable in use, especially where the free end flap is made, as is commonly thercase, of a cloth fabric, A principal objection to such adjusting straps resides in the necessity of manipulating the buckle during each application and removal of the trousers, the tightening of the strap at each application of the trousers necessitating a new adjustment of the buckle, this resulting after repeated use, in a punctur ing or perforating of the flap of the strap, and Where such flaps are made of the common cloth fabric, the flaps become damaged and mutilated after repeated use, and the adjusting function of the buckle is rendered v'alueless. Moreover, the necessity of manipulating the buckle during every tightening or loosening operation of the strap is time-consuming and tedious. To eliminate these objections and to provide an adjustab e s r p o be d, in which damage or jury to the flap is obviated and in which a quick releasability of the strap is provided for, is a principal desideratum of my present invention.

In the practice of my invention, I employ the usual securing strap or band provided with the free end flap for receiving the adjusting buckle, and in lieu of sewing or otherwise attaching the buckle on the band, I employ a buckle receiving tab carrying the said buckle, the said tab being constructed for permitting quick attachment and detachment'of the same from the band, snap fastener or button fastening means being provlded to this end. With the provision of this construction the buckle may be employed for making the desired adjustment of the strap to the leg of the wearer, this adjustment being necessitated only occasionally, openingand closing of the strap being provided by the snap fastener or button fastening means.

Inthe making of an adjusting securing strap of the nature above referred to, in order to provide a maximum comfort to the wearer and in order to normally conceal from view the button or snap fastener securing means so that the strap hasa neat appearance, I have found it very desirable to inter-relate the buckle, the tab, and the I end flap so that said end flap is received by the buckle with the end flap normally overlying the tab and preferably overlying the snap fastener or button securing means. in order, moreover, to more effectively conceal the tab and securing means from view, and

in order to keep the flap in a fiat and neat looking condition overlying the tab, I have found it further desirable and itis a further object of my invention to provide a flap retaining means which is arranged to ride quately perform its function without inter fering'with the quick attaching and detach ing operations of the tab.

The principal objects of my present invention therefore may be said to include the provision of a securing strap combining the features adjustabillty, quick operabrlity and detached to the hand without causing a bunching or gathering of material between the tab and the hand, a fiat-lying, non-irritating and comfortable strap being thus provided for; the further provision of a securing strap of the nature referred to in which the tab, buckle and end flap" are constructed and arranged so that the end flap is insertable in the buckle with the former overlying the tab" and auxiliary fas-' tening means, concealing the latter from View and providing an adjustable strap of neat looking appearance; and the still further provision of a strap of this nature in which the flap is retained in a flat. position overlying the tab, enhancing the appearance of the strap construction.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objectsyas may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the elements and their relation one to the other, as hereinafter particularly described and sought to be defined in the claims, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which show preferred embodiments of my invention and in which Fig. 1- is a view of a trouser leg bottom having my invention applied thereto and showing the tab and auxiliary fastening "means. concealed fromview, the strap construction having the appearance of the usual strap,

the strap generally designated as 8 being shown-anplied-to a leg 10 of the trousers having the usual opening or slit 11. Although I show my invention in the form of a trouser leg bottom or knee strap, it will be understood thatin its broader aspects-my invention. is capable of application to other parts of garments where securing straps employed.

The strap S when employed as a knee strap comprises the usual band 12 made of cloth fabric sewed or otherwise attached to the leg 10 of the trousers by a line ofstitching 13, the said band 12- encircling the leg and being provided with the usual free integral end flap 14: for receiving the buckle 15, for adjusting the strap to fit the leg of the wearer.

For the purpose of eliminating the wear and tear due to the repeated puncturing of the flap 141 in adjusting the buckle 15 at each application of the trousers, and for the further purpose of providing for a quick opening and closing of the strap S, the buckle 15 of my inventionin lieu of being. attached to the band 13 is carried by a separate and removable. tab 16, the said tab 16 being detachably attachable to the band- 13 by'suitable securing means such for-example as the button securing means shown in Figs". 1 to 1 of the drawings, the band 13' being provided with the button 17' sewed or otherwise attached thereto, and the tab 16' being provided with the complemental buttonhole 18 for cooperation therewith. With the provision of this construction, it will be seen that after once adjusting the buckle 15 to accommodate and fit the size of the wearers leg, the adjustment of the buckle 15 is not disturbed during subsequent application and removal of the trousers, the auxiliary fastening means provided by the button securing means being utilized for tightening and loosening or opening and closing of the se curing strap S, a securing strap in which quick operability is combined with adjustability and long life being thereby provided.

For the purpose of producing a strap construction in which a maximum. comfort may be afforded to the user and in which the strap presents a neat looking appearance, I have found it very desirable to inter-relate the detachable tab 16, the buckle 15 and the flap 14 so that the flap 1 1 when threaded or passed through the buckle 15 will overlie the tab 16 and preferably overlie the button.

To the end of enhancing the appearance of the securing strap i. I provide means for retaining the flap 14 in proper flat position overlying the tab 16, this being especially desirable when the flap 14 is made of extended length, such retaining means preferably comprising a loop element 19 which may for example be made of metal, the said loop receiving the outer end of the flap 14 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings. In the preferred construction the loop 19 is attached to the outer end of the tab 16, so that after a first adjustment of the buckle 15 the flap 14 may be threaded or passed through the loop 19 and retained thereafter in this position without disturbance, the unb-uttoning and buttoning of the strap being permitted with the flap maintained ina condition overlying the tab.

Referring now to Fig. 5 of the drawings, I show a modification of the invention in which a snap fastening means is utilized in lieu of the button fastening means heretofore referred to, and in this form of my invention the detachable tab 16 is provided with the female fastening element 20 which is sewed or-otherwise attached to the tab, and the band 13' is provided with the compan on male fastening element 21 sewed or otherwise attached thereto. In other respects this form of my invention is similar to the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4, the buckle 15 being carried by the tab 16 and It will therefore be seen that the present construction is adaptable both to button and snap fastening means, this adaptability of the device being one of the advantages thereof.

The manner of making and using my improved garment securing strap will in the main be fully apparent from the'above detailed description thereof. It will be further apparent that by my invention ll provide a securing strap combining the features of adjustability with quick operability and long life of the strap, mutilation and wear and tear of the flap of the strap being obviated. It will be further apparent that with the flap 14 arranged to normally overlie the tab 16 and the auxiliary fastening means. especially where the flap is retained in such overlying position irrespective of the opening and closing operation of the strap, that a bunching or gathering of material between the fiap and the band of the trousers is eliminated, with the result that a fiat-lying, non-irritating, comfortable and neat looking strap is obtained.

While I have shown and described my device in the preferred forms, it will be obvious that many changes and modifications may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the in-' flap, a separate buckle carrying tab, fastening means on said band and complemental fastening means on said tab adjacent one end thereof for permitting quick attachability and detachability of the tab, and a buckle attached to and carried by the tab adjacent its other end, the said buckle adjustably receiving the end flap for adjustably positioning the tab thereon, with the flap arranged in position overlying the said tab and the complemental fastening means.

2, In a garment, a securing strap comprising a fabric band member provided with a flap, a separate buckle carrying tab, fastening means on said band and complemental fastening. means on sa d tab adjacent one end thereof for permitting quick attach ability and detachability of the tab, and a buckle attached to and carried by the tab adjacent the other end thereof, the said buckle adjustably receiving the end flap for adjustably positioning the tab thereon, with the flap arranged in position overlying the said tab.

3. In a trouser leg, a knee strap comprising a fabric band attached to the trouser leg bottom and provided with a free end flap, a separate fabric buckle carrying tab detachably attachable to said band, compleinental fastening means on said band and tab for permitting quick attachability and vdetachability of the tab, and a buckle car ried by the tab and attached thereto so that the said end flap is received thereby to overlie the said tab.

4. In a trouser leg, a knee strap comprising a fabric band attached to the trouser leg bottom and provided with a free end fiap, a separate buckle carrying tab, fastening means on said band and complemental fastening means on said tab adjacent one end thereof for permitting quick attachabifity and detachability of the tab, a separate three-bar buckle having its central bar attached to the tab at the other end thereof, the said buckle receiving the end flap so that the latter is arrangedto normally overlie the said tab and the fastening means.

5. In a trouser leg, a knee strap comprising a hand attached to the trouser leg bottom and providedwith a free end flap, aseparate buckle carrying tab detachably attachable to said band, and a buckle attached to and carried by the tab constructed for re ceiving the said end flap with the latter arranged to overlie the said tab, complemental fastening means on said band and tab for permitting quick attachebility and detach Of the buckle for retaining said flap in position over the said tab;

6. In a trouser leg, a knee strep comprising a band attachedto the trouser leg bottom and provided with a free end flap, & separate buckle carrying tab detachably ettacheble te:v said hand, and 2b buckle carried by the tab constructed for receiving the said end flap with the letter arranged to overlie the said tab, and means independent of the buckle carried by said tab complemental fasteningineans on said band and. tab for permitting quick attaehebility and detachability of the tab for retaining the flap in position over the tab.
