Description
J. E. IEILMER PENCIL HOLDER Filed Nov. 27. 1922 Patented Aug, 7, i923.
PATENT QFFECE.
JAMES E. ELMER, OF PRESCOTT, ARIZONA.
PENCIL HOLDER.
Application filed November 27, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, JAMES E. ELMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Yavapai and State of Arizona, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders for retain ing pencils, pens and analogous articles against accidental displacement, and comprising a. clip to engage the upper edge of the pocket or like part, and one or more receivers for the pencil or like article to be retained thereby.
The invention provides a. device of this character which facilitates the placing of the article in the receiver and which prevents the casual displacement thereof, the ends of the receivers being outwardly flared to direct the article therein.
The objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet the different conditions and requirements, various changes in form, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification t Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention mounted in lace upon the pocket of a garment.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a. perspective view thereof.
Figure 4; is a top elevation.
Referring to the drawing in detail 1 repindicates the hem or upper edge of a pocket to which my holder is attached by the lever clasp 3. The body t is preferably formed of an integral piece of sheet metal which is cut and bent to form intermediate and end cylindrical sect-ions or sleeves 5 for the reception of the pencil or like article. A connectresents a portion of a garment, of which 2 Serial No. 603,652.
ing web 6 is thusly formed and provided with an upwardly extending portion 7 which is then bent downwardly to provide a wing or plate 8 to which is pivoted the clamping lever 9 which is provided with resilient extensions 10 that produce the necessary tension upon the lever 9 by contact ith the web 6, the lever 9 is also provided with an inwardly projecting penetrating tongue 11 at its free end which engages a similar tongue 12 struck from the intermediate sleeve 5 when the holder is applied to the garment and binds the fabric there between which produces an effective fastening element which is capable of preventing displacement of the holder.
A pencil holder such as described is simple and can be produced very cheaply as the entire device is formed of a single plate of sheet metal cut to proper shape and the parts folded to form the sleeves 5 the web 6, and extension 7 to which the clamping lever is attached. These folds and retaining elements may be made without the use of expensive machinery and produced with great rapidity. The sleeves 5 are the only part exposed to vie and this may be ornamented and made attractive as is desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A pencil holder of the class described, consisting of a single piece of metal cut to form integral resilient sleeves having a connecting web therebetween, a portion of said web being directed to form a back wing, a clamping lever pivoted to said wing and having resilient tongues directed therefrom to produce tension upon said lever by engaging said web, and an inwardly direct penetrating tongue upon the free end of said lever, a similar tongue struck from the back wall of the intermediate sleeve and cooperating with the first mentioned tongue to bind the fabric therebetween hen the holder is applied.
In testimony whereof I atliX my signature.
JAMES E. ELMER.
