Description

.R. YALE.
Lifting-Jacks.`
Patevntedlan. 6,1874.`
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ROBERT YALE, OF AFTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,303, dated January 6, 1874; application filed October 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT YALE, of Afton, in the county of Ohenango, and in the Stat-e of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tagen-Jacks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing inakin g a part of this specification, in which- Figurel is a side elevation of my device, showing the relative position of parts before the lever is depressed and Fig. 2 is a like view of said device with said lever depressed, Iand the sliding head raised.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention has for its object the raising of a wagonaXle, so as to permit of the removal of its wheels; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the various part-s of the device, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In `the annexed drawing, A represents a standard provided with a central slot, which extends from the upper end downward to a point near its lower end, and contains ahead, B, that is permitted to slide vertically within said slot. Upon one face of the standard A, at each side of its slot, is secured a metal bar or rack, O, which is provided with a series of notches, c, that extend downward and inward, as shown, and serve as bearings for the fulcrum -pin d of a lever, D, which lever extends through said slot, as shown. The pivotal end of the lever D is provided, upon its upper side, with a cam shaped enlargement, d', which, when the outer end of said lever is depressed, bears against the lower end of said head, and raises the latter to the position shown in Fig. 2.
For the aecommodationof axles having different heights froln the ground, the fulcrumpin d of the operating-lever may be transferred from one notch c to another above or below the same.
A number of steps, b, provided within the upper end of the head B, assist in effecting such adjustment.
The device, thus constructed, is;strong, durable, inexpensive, and can be furnished at a small cost.
Having thus fully set'forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new The slotted standardA, sliding head B with steps b, notched bars or rack O e, lever D d',
and fulcrum-pin d, constructed and combined in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of September, 1873.
ROBERT YALE. Witnesses:
A. SEEPARDsoN, It. B. PRINDLE.
