QMQKEHG-PIPE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed August 81, 1920. Serial No. 407,152.
To 025 whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. SHAW, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Joneshoro, in the county of Crai head and ensas, have invented new and veni nts in Smoking-Pipe At- 9 oi which the following is a speci s invention relates to attachments for Lang pipes and has for its object the pro lhe device adapted inpipe howl for supporting a eo whereby the co will be prerom becoming moist or wet from rnmiing through "the stem into the l cs insurinw burning of all the venting waste is commonly ionmtudinal sectional view a a ipe showing another modified 1. my device disposed therein 5 is a cross sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 4t,
Figure 6 is a cross sectional view on the line 6-6 of Figure l, and
Figure 7 is e erspective view of another modified form oi: my device Referring more particularly to the drawings and specially to Figures 1 and 2, the letter A designates a ipe bowl of ordinary construction and D esiates my attachment as a whole. My device is formed of metal and may be formed in one piece and comprises a grate portion 10 formed as a I disk convexed outwardly and provided with a series of perforations 11 which are here shown as circular but which might be of any other shape if preferred. This 'disk 10 is of a size substantially equal to the diameter of the pipe bowl at the bottom portion thereof and is adapted to support the tobacco placed within the pipe bowl.
In order to support the device within the bowl I provide a strip 12 formed at one side of the disk and extending vertically and formed upon the extremity of this strip are laterally extending tongues 13 which are curved to define an expansihle split ring, as clearly shown When the device is inserted within the pipe howl, it will be seen that this expansible ring; will ifrictionally engage the inner side of the bowl and consequently hold the device against displacement in Figure ii I have a modification in which the entire device fo single length of wire tion spirally coiled, as line a convex dish portio tions vide for passage a. tween the convolutions consequ the purpose as the lo sl crihed for nor well I tne howl wi position ln the form. shown Figures 4 the numeral 17 designa s which is provided with nal slots 18 which give the di ance of a grate upon which thu supported. Formed upon one side of the disk 17 and extending'at ri ht angles thereto, is an upwardly disposed strip 19 which is bent upon itself, as indicated at 20, to define a clamp or cli engageahle over the rim of the bowl for olding the device in position.
In Fire 7 the arrangement is the same but the structure is diflerent inasmuch as the device is formed from a single length of wire having one end portion spira ly' coiled, as shown, to define a convex disk-like portion 21 from which, extends a vertical portion 22 which is bent upon itself, as indicated at 23, to define a clip engageable over the rim of the bowl. lhe terminal portion of this clip is coiled, as indicated at 24, to
form a handle whereby thedevice may be inserted or removed from the pipe.
In all forms of the device the utility is the same and it will be quite apparent that when my device is. used it will prevent tobacco within the pipe bowl from reaching the botv tom of the bowl and will therefore prevent it from becoming wet. The device therefore insures a cool dry smoke and the utilization of all the tobacco.
While I have shown and described th preferred embodiments of my invention, it
is of course to beunderstood that I reserve 'the right to make such changes-in the form,
ing in a split ring1 frictionally engaging within the bowl of e pipe. I In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
JOHN SHAW.
