Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOSEPH C. BREWER, OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM H. ROBERTS 8U CO., OF SAME PLAGE. i
IMPRovEMENTlN PORTABLE FuRNAcEs. l
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,226, dated January 6, 1874 application filed December 30, 1872.
To .all whom it may concern:
` tion of a cheap and practicable furnace; one
that is light, portable, and adjustable, and designed, principally, to be used in the open air. The nature of my invention consists in constructing the furnace in two sections, each having, at its outer edges and at the top and bottom thereof numerous holes, by means of which, and the employment of bolts and nuts, the furnace can be adapted to the use of rMtlrev largest caldron or the smallest kettle,
while, at the same'time, it can be so shifted as to increase or diminish the draft, and compel the smoke and sparksy to be driven away from the operator or attendant.
The construction and operation of my invention are as follows: A is the furnace, which is composed of two sheets or strips, B B', of metal, boiler-iron, or other suitable material. These sheets have punched, bored, or otherwise formed, numerous holes, b b, in their upper and lower sections, ycommencing from their outer edges and extending in toward theircenters, and are connected together by the bolts b1 and nuts b2. This construction enables the rim of the furnace to be contracted or enlarged, so th at it may accommodate itself to different-sized pots and kettles. C is the door, which is cut in the lower portion of the section B, and C' is the collar for the pipe, should one be desired,
which is attached to a hole cut in the upper portion of the section B.
When the furnace is to be transported from f place to place, if desired, the two 'sections'may be detached and one placed within the other,
thus being easily carried; or, where a number of them are to be transported, compelling open air, and will reach the boiling-point in.
about one-fourthof the time, which, with the freedom from Vsmoke and sparks blowing into the face of the attendant, and its cheapness, makes it very desirable.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The furnace A, consisting of the sheets B B', having holes b b and bolts and nuts b1 b1 and b2 b2, when the sheets are entirely independent, so thatone can be placed in the other for transportation or packing awa-y; and the sheets are so arranged that, in operation, the furnace can be adjusted so as to receive a vessel of any desired size, and the bolts `and nuts always securing it, so as to leave a true circut y; lar opening for said vessel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing wn'tnesses. y
JOSEPH C. BREWER.
