SAND OR LiKE IVIIXNG MACHINE.
Applicatie-@filed December si, 1922. serial Nojeoarra.
To all whom t 77mg/ concern: y
Re it known that l, JOHN VILLIAM Rroir Anns, subject of the King ot Great Britain, ol' l5) llvy House Lane, Coseley, near Bilston, in the county of Stafford, England, have in rented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand or like Mixingy Machines, of which the following,` is a specification.
This invention relates to a new or improved sand or like mixingmachine, and refers more particularly to a machine adapted for mixing sand and oil, or several kinds ot' sand, ,'lior use in foundry and like work.`
The objects oit my invention are to provide an improved machine for this purpose which is simple and effective invoperation and comparatirely` cheap to iuanuiacture, and by which 'the sand and oil are thoroughly incorporated with a minimum expendi-l ture ot power.
1l'7' ith tlieseobjects in view my invention essentially comprises a sandor like mixing machine in which a spindle rotatably mounted within a suitable trough or casing carries two independent helical blades or series of blades ot opposite pitch disposedon opposite sides oit the middle, or other, point ol2 the shaft, the blades extendingl towards or ter minatinp; in a plane passing` through this point substantially at right angles to the axis of the shaft. v
It hopper, or the like, is provided on the trough or casing through which sand yand oil, or different kinds of sand in the required proportions, are introduced, and thesha'ft carrying the blades is rotated by any suitable means in such a direction that material `l'allinff; upon the blades is carried from both ends towards the centre of the casino:` The two streams oi material meeting at the centre, or other point, and impinging upon each other are forced or thrown upwards againstl the sides of the trough,`or casing', oragainst suitable bal'lie platesV provided therein in a space above the blades, and tall back` again on to the blades which carry the material back towards the centre ont the casing.
By the repetition oli this impinging action oi the two streams the material isvery rapidly and thoroughly mixed, and, when the desired degree ot incorporation is attained, the mixed material is discharged through an opening at the bottom of the trough or casing which is normally closed by a slidingonhinged cover, or the like, the rotation of the. shatt being maintained until thc whole ofthe material is discharged.
iis the trough or casing is closed, except for the hopper opening, during thewhole ot the mixing operation, if sand and oil are being mixed none of the oil can escape and the machine is, therefore, much Vmore economical in the use ot oil than the usual type of' sand mill in which the oil is continually pressed out.
lily improved machine can be produced in a variety of different forms to suit different requirements, but one preferred embodiment i has the
passing through outwardly projecting flanges c. The upper part ot the casing; has a rectangular or other opening to receive the hopper d which is bolted or otherwise secured thereto, rand the lower portion of the (fatina` has an opening` e which is normally closed by a sliding,1 door y. This door may be conveniently operated by a rod and handle o .wiiich is extended to one end of the machine.
The. shaft 7i is carried by suitable bearings 7' mounted on the standards c which support the trough or casing c, and at the one end ot the shaft are provided the usual fast and loose pulleys Z and` belt strikingl ,e'ear tor driving;` the shaft from the works shafting. or other source ot power. Mounted on the shaft within the trough, or casing, are the helical blades m, n, ot right and left hand pitch, respectively.
ln the form illustrated each .of these blades is formed integral with a sleeve p which is a sliding lit on, and is secured to, the shaft by grubescrews (I, or like means, and the length oit each sleeve is equal. to halt the length of the portion 01"' the shaft within the trough or casing, so that the two sleeves tions thereof being connected by bolts If .downwards again the materia-l which and their blades terminate at their inner ends in the saine vertical plane as shown in. Figs. I and 2.
The action of the machine Will be readily .followed from the general description above.
thrown upwards by the blades at tueir iiieeting point, but this is not essen el., as `the sides of the casing normally serve to direct is thrownv up.
. I'ciaim: y l. Inv a sand mixing machine, a trough container of depth gr ater than its bre dth, apertures yfor respectively introducino' niaterial into the trough and for discha it therefrom, lay rotatable shaft eccen iically mounted Within the trough, two solid, independent helical blades of right 'and lefthand pitch, respectively, carried by the shaft and disposed rrespective-ly toward opposite ends thereof, the inner ends of the said hclica-l blades terminating in a rsubstantially i common plane.
2. In a sand mixing machine, a covered, trough container, of depth greater than its breadth, apertures for respectively vintroducing material into the container and for discharging` it therefrom, a rotatable` shaft eccentricallymounted Within the trough, tivo solid, independent helical blades of opposite pitch carried bythe shaft, and disposed to- Ward opposite ends thereof With their adj cent ends terminating' in substantially the same plane, and a baffle located above the adjacent vends of the blades and below the rroivn of the casing.
3. In a sand mixing machine, a covered,
trough. container, ofdepth greater than its breadth, apertures for respectively introducing material into the container and for discharging itr therefrom, av rotatable shaft cccentrically mounted Within the trough, two solid. independent helical. blades of oppositev pitch carried by the shaft, and disposed to-v ward opposite ends `thereof with their adjacent ends terminating in substantially7 theI same plane, and a baiile located above the af: cent ends of the blades and below the crmvn of the easing, and leaving a free oi. i space between its upper side and the crown or the casing.
it. In a sand mixing machine, a trough', of
