a citizen of the United Statesof America, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented cera specification. j
My invention relates to supports for elecl0 tric conductors and particularly thatclass of supports used for suspending a trolley wire or conductorfrom an overhead hanger. The object of my invention is to produce a device which willbe simple, eflicient, easy of installation and operation.
Another object of my invention is to produce a device of the character stated in which the jaws can be moved to a closed position as when the clamp is in gripping engagement with a trolley conductor and also in which the parts can be moved to an open position and maintained in such position without the use of auxiliary means.
It has been a general practice in the past to use clamps having means for bringing the jaws into secure gripping engagement with the conductor and maintain them in this position, but such clamps have nothad means for moving the jaws to an open position out of engagement with the conductor other than by means of the hands. In some types of clamps in which the jaws are loosely susmember 1 is an operating member 12 having a threaded engagement 13 with the supportpended the center of gravity has been such that under certain conditions the jaws would hang open by gravity when not in clamping engagement with the conductor, but such clamps have not had a positive means for moving the jaws to and maintaining them in an open position.
My invention resides in the new and novel construction, combination and arrangement of the various parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the drawings.

I have shown the device attached to a hanger only inFig. 3, but it will be readily all the other figuresi'n a similarmanner.
In my preferred construction embodying my invention I employ a supporting member '1 provided with a flange Qand a threaded To the lower end of the supporting member 1 isa depending lug 4 provided with a passage for a pin 5. ' The lugs 8 and 8" are each providedwith a passage to receive the pin 5 andwhen assembled in combination with the support member 1 they pivot freely about the pin5. Exterior of and near the top of each jaw is a shoulder 9 and also a hook 'shapedlip'lO Rotatably mounted on the supporting ing member 1 whereby the operating member moves toward or away from the conductor when rotated.
The lower part of the operating member is formed with an enlarged annular recess shaped flange 16 at the. lower .end of the operating member. The lower end of the operating member and the upper end of each clamp interlock through the member 10 projecting into the channel 15 and the hook shaped member 16 projecting into the channel 11. The arrangement issuch that the member 16 will engage either the member 9 or the member 10, depending whether the operating member is moved toward or away 0 from the conductor when rotated. The upper end of the operating member12 is provided withan annular lip 17 adapted to be turned inwardly after assembling the various parts so that it will engage the flange 2 on the support member and thereby limit the pin 5 in which position I am then able to screw the operating member toward the .jaws until the members ,10 will interlock withjthe operating member as previously, de-

The annular flange 17 is then rolled inwardly until it will interlap with the flange 2. thereby limiting the upward movement of the opera-ting member so that the lower edge A of the operating member .(see Fig. 51) will still engage with thepin 5 therepreventing' the displacement of the pin 5 and the dis-assembly of the parts forming the clamp. The engagement o'f'the flange 17 with. the flange 2also, limits the extent to which the jaws can be opened. v
. In installing my device upon a hanger and conductor 1 first screw the clamp into position .upon the. "hanger stud Hand bring the jaws 6 into alinementwith the trolley wire.
' If the lips 7 are not opened sufficiently to receive the conductor by rotating the operating member 12 in one dimctiomthe jaws will bemoved to an open position sufficient to receive the trolley wire. The operator then positions the conductor between the lips 7 and by rotating the operating member in the opposite direction from thatrequired to open the jaws,the jaws will becl-osed and the lips brought into engagement with the conductor thereby holding the conductor in position.
.By applying a wrench to the faces 19 of the operating member the jaws can be brought into further and more secure engagement with the conductor.
., It will be'noted that in 3 thelmember 16 engages with the member 9 when the parts are forced into and held in engagement with the trolley conductor, and that in, Fig. 5 the 7 member 16 engages with the member 10 rwhn the parts are opened up and held in an open position. i i
There are numerous modifications which can be made from the: construction herein described and shown and which will fall within the scope of my invention and, therefore, I donot wish to be limit-ed other than by my claims. j j v,

A conductor clamp comprising in combination a pair of jaws, means which the aws pivotally engage to secure the aws to a hanger, operating means toengage the jaws at a point below the pivotal axis to move the jaws into engagement with a conductor and to engage means on the jaws above the pivotal axis to move the jaws away from the conductor.
