A. M ANULTY SAFETY GUARD FOR RAZORS Filed Feb. 28. 1921 2 Sheets-Shem 2 Patented July '10, 1923.
smear F Application filed February as,- 1a2i5- s amnsa1sj- To all mam-a may. concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW MCANULTY, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Ottawa, county of Carleton, and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Guards for Razors, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relatesto safety guards for razors of the common type and aims to devise a guard that is a part of the complete razor which is readily and expeditiously attached and detached from the blade either on the left or the right thereof.
My razor guard consists of a guard pivoted to the handle with the tang of the razor. I prefer to provide two guards one on each side of the razor, each one capable of adjustment on the blade independently as the razor is used either with the left or right hand.
In the drawing wherein similar figures indicate the same parts in the several views:
Figure 1 shows a razor with the guards extended. I I
Fig. 2 shows one guard attached to the blade and the other locked in the handle.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the razor blade showing the guard fastening device connected thereto.
Fig. 4. shows a razor blade with a guard attached in the reverse side.
Fig. 5 shows the means for locking the guard in the blade handle.
Referring to Fig. 1, Ais the razor blade. B is the handle. G and D are the guards. The handle B is made in halves the outer end being riveted to a spacer 1, The inner end is riveted on each side of the razor tang over the guards C, D. As both guards are of similar construction one only will be described. The guard D is pivoted at E with the razor blade. The extension 2 is made nearly the length of the razor tang and is provided with a back piece 3 bent at an angle thereto.
This piece serves to limit the closing of the guard into the handle by engaging the same as shown in Fig. 5. The shape of the guard is preferably as shown, but other contours may be used and be as effective, but in all instances the guard should project past the edge of the blade, the extent of this proj ecting being limited by a lug 4. In order to attach the outer end of the guard to the guard at 6. The latch is made with two lugs 7 and 8. 7 is notched at 9. Both lugs are bent at right angles to the body of the latch. Lug 7 fixes the lateral position and lug 8 in conjunction with lug 4: looks the guard to the blade against radial movement. As only one guard is used at a time, it becomes essential to lock the other into the handle in a secure manner. For that purpose the spacer 1 has a back notch 11 and a top notch 10. The lower side ofnotch 11 is razor blade, I provide'a latch pivotedtothe made to support the edge of the guard and j the notch, itself serves to receive lug 7 of latch 5. Notch 10 receives lug 9 of the same latch as shown.
The part 12 of spacer 1 is of less thickness than the main part thereof in order to allow the projection 13 of latch 5 to be inserted between the handle and the part 12 so as to maintain the guard close to the handle in order not to obstruct the razor blade when closing the same.
The lug l of the guard aside from limits ing the projection of the guard past the edge of the blade as previously explained serves also as a stop to limit the entrance of the blade into the handle, the tang of the razor blade restingon this lug when the blade is closed so as to prevent the end of the blade to come in contact with the extension of t e spacer.
What I claim is: 1. In a razor of the class described having a safety guard pivotally attached to the blade, means for holding the said guard on the blade comprising a stop integral therewith and resting on-the razor tang, and a latch attached to said guard and provided with stop means to rest on the back of the razor and locking means to hold the said guard distant from said razor.
In a razor-of the class described, a guard pivoted to the blade, stop means car-v ried by said guard to position the edge thereof a required distanceparallel with the edge of the blade, positioning means 'attached to the guard to position the same laterally of said blade and to co-act with the stop means on the guard to prevent radial movement of said guard.
3. In a safety razor of the class described, a'razor handle, a spacer 'for the outer end thereof havinga back notch and a top notch, a razor b ade an a gua coiacident y p oted to the opposite end of said handle, a locking latch attached to said guard and means on said latch servingzto lockithesame indifferently to the handle or to the blade.
4. In a safety razor of the class described, a handle formed of halves separated at one end by a spacer and at the opposite end by the tang of the razor, a guard pivoted with the tang, resting inside and against one-half of the handle, a lug 4 integral With said guard acting as a stop to limit the entrance of the razor blade in thehandle.
,5. In asafetyrazor ofithe class ;described, a handle formed of halves separated at one end by a. spacer and at the opposite end by 'the'tang of the razor and "the safety guards,
a back piece 3 bent at an angle to the guard so as to engage the handle and keep the guard close to the-said handle.
