LOCKING DEVICE.
Application filed August 26, 1921. Serial No. 495,451.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, J oserrr L. Ocnnn'rnnn, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in thecounty of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Locking Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a locking device for securing caps to the radiators of automobiles, and the like.
()neof the objects of the invention is to provide means for preventing theloss of radiator cap and the like, by reason of the vibration concurrent with the travel of the vehicle. A further object is to provide a device of the type mentioned, by means of which the unauthorized removal of the radiator cap, as by theft, is prevented, and the owner of the vehicle is protected against the loss of any valuable accessory which may be secured to said cap.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set'forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view conventionally illustrating the invention as applied to an automobile radiator. Figure 2 is a plan view illustratin, one of the locking collars enlarged. l igure 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof. Figures 4 and 5 are plan and sectional views, respectively, illustrating aslight modification.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3 of. the drawing, 1(1- and 10 designate two collars, preferablyof ovoid shape in plan view, each provided with an inner orifice. The shape of the collars, however, is immaterial. Passing diametrically through each collar arethreadcd holes 11, and each collar is also provided with an opening 12, intersecting one of the threaded holes 11, and also intersecting another hole 13, leading in from the periphery of the collar and disposed in alignment with the last mentioned hole 11. \Vorking in the holes 11 are set screws 1 1, which project inwardly through the collars to engage the neck of the radiator C, and the radiator'cap C, respectively.
In practice, when it is desired to apply the invention, the collar 10 is secured to the radiator C and the collar 10 to the cap C. In affixing the collar 10 in place, the set screws 14 are first set flush with the inner orifice of the collar and the latter placed It will be noted that the hole 13 in eaclfco'll-ar isiso positioned that the screw 11 in alignment therewith, may be reached bv a suitable tool passed through said hole.
When the collars have been secured in place the holes 12 are in register, so as to permit of the passage of the shackle of a padlock 15 therethrough. When the padlock is secured in place, theshackle prevents access to those screws 11 which are in alignment with the holes 13, by inserting a screw.

In lieu of the constructions illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the form illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 may be employed for preventing the unauthorized removal of the set screws or tampering with the fundamental parts which are vital to the protection required. Referring to said figures, collars 1G and '16 are provided withv segmental recesses 17, to receive correspondingly shaped cover pieces 18, having countersunk holes 19, to accommodate screws 20, which are employed for securing the pieces 18 in place. Said recesses 17 are so disposed a to intersect the holes 11 for the set screws 14, so that the heads of'said screws are covered by said pieces 18, when the latter are in place.
The collar 16 is provided with openings 21, to receive locking pawls 22, mounted upon guide posts 23, reciprocably mounted in the collar, and springs 24 are provided for forcing said pawls into complemental recesses formed in the collar 16. A retain-' ing ring 25 is provided with suitable holes 26, to receive securing screws 27, by means of which said ring is,v secured to said collar 16, the movement of the pawls 22 being limited by said retaining ring. A suitable key hole 28 is provided for insertion of a key to manipulate the locking pawls 22. In practice, the cap G is removed fromthe radiator and the collar 16* secured thereto. The collar '16 is also secured to the radiator C while the cap is off. The capis then screwed back to its position until the pawls 22 spring into the recesses in collar 16, and the two collar are then held against relative rotation, until the pawls are disengaged by means of a key.
. The advantages of the invention will be readily understood. For instance, by placing the shackle of the padlock so as to extend across the hole 13, it is impossible to remove all of the set screws without first removing the lock, and substantially the same result is obtained by. means of the segmentalcover pieces 18, By locking the two collars together, relative rotation is predestroying the collars.

ldaving thus explained the nature of the invention, and described an operative manner of constructing andusing the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, or all of the forms of its use, what is claimed is:--
1. A locking device of the character described comprising two complemental collars having inwardly projecting set screws, whereby said collars may be secured to two relatively rotatable members and means whereby access to said screws is prevented when the collars are in operative positions.
2. A locking device of the character described comprising twocomplemental collars having means to engage two relatively rotatable members, means for locking the collars together to prevent relative rotation,
and means whereby disei'igagement of the collars from the parts to be protected is prevented while the collars are locked together. i

A locking device of the character described comprising two complemental collars provided with diametrically disposed holes, recesses intersecting the outer ends of said holes, set screws working in said holes, cover pieces removably secured in said recesses, and means for locking the collars against relative rotation.
6. A locking device of the character described comprising two complemental collars having inwardly projected set screws, whereby said, collars may beseeured to two relatively movable members, a loclccarried by one collar, the other collar having recesses complemental to said lock, and means for covering the outer ends of said set screws.
7. A locking device of the character described comprisin two complemental collars having diametrically disposed holes therein, and recesses intersecting the outer ends of said holes, set screws working in said holes, cover pieces removably secured in said recesses, and a lock carried by one collar, the other collar having recesses complemental to said lock.
8. The combination with a radiator and a removable cap therefor, of a collar having inwardly projecting set screws engaging the radiator, means carried by the cap complemental to said collar, means for locking said collar and said complemental means against relative rotation, and means whereby disengagement of the collar from the radiator is prevented while said parts are locked against rotation.
