This invention relates to foot stool devices, and has for one of its objects to provide a device of this character whereby heated or cooled air may be caused to pass through a portion of the stool to enable the feet to be heated in cold weather or cooled in warm weather, as desired.

Another object of the invention 1s to provide a device of the character described mcluding a foot rest having an opening, a heat imparting medium arranged to cause the heat therefrom to pass through theopening, and a heat retarding or modifying element to qualify and control the amount of the heat passing through the opening.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and specifically pointed out in the claims.

The improved device may be 1nstalled n any of the usual foot rest devices but 1s designed more particularly for use 1n connection with the combined seats or stools for shoe salesmen and a rest or support for the foot of the customer, and for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a conventional form of a device of this character, and in the drawings thus employed Figure 1 is a perspective view of a conventional shoe salesmans stool and foot rest, with the improvement applied.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

The stool or seat portion is represented as a whole at 10, the mclined foot rest at 11 and the supporting legs at 12, of the usual construction.

The foot rest portion 11 is formed with a relatively large opening 13, preferably elliptical as shown in Fig. 1, and encompassed with a plurality of enlargements or supporting shoulders 14, 15 and 16. Resting on the shoulder 14 is a frame 17 carrying an electric heating coil or coils 18 of conventional construction with which conductor wires 19 are connected and provided with a suitable controlling switch attached t2 2t(l)1e stool or seat portion and indicated a Resting on the shoulder 15 is another frame 21 which supports a foraminous sheet or diaphragm 22, for instance ofhea-vy wire netting or the like.

Resting on the shoulder 16 is another frame 23 which carries a sheet 24 of heat retarding and modifying material such as asbestos or the like.

A bracket device 25 is supported on the lower face of the foot rest portion 11 and carries a small electric motor indicated conventionally at 26, and arranged to operate an air fan represented conventionally at 27 within the opening 13.

The conductor wires for the motor 26 are represented conventionally at 28, and are provided with a suitable controlling switch 29 adjacent to the switch device 20, and convenient to the occupant of the stool.

No part of the device is in view except the member 23 and the asbestos mat 24 when used in cold weather, and no part is in view except the screen member 21-22 when used in warm weather.

When the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 2 with the heat retarding or modifying member 24 in position, the feet of the customer can be quickly warmed and the stockings dried if necessary, for instance, in cold weather, by cutting in the heating medium.

Then by simply detaching the frame 23 and the asbestos sheet 24, and operating the fan, cutting out theheating medium and cutting in the fan 27, the feet of a customer ma be eflectually cooled and the stockings dried as will be obvious.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be applied to stools and foot rests of various sizes without material structural change therein, except in the opening through the foot rest.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is l. A device of the class described comprising a support having an opening with the margin of the opening formed of three encqmpassing rests decreasing in diameter toward the interior of the support, a heat imparting medium supported on the innermost and smallest rest, a foraminous member resting u on the intermediate rest, and a heat retar ing element resting upon the outer and largest rest, whereby the heat imparting medium, the foraminous member, and the heat retarding element are independently supported and inde endently detachable.
