Description

July 3, 1923;
- J. TIMMEL SELF IGNITING MATCH CONTAINER I Filed May 5, 1922 INVENTOR M J BY A TTOR Y l PatentedJuly 3, 19 23. '1 I UNITED STATES JENNY TIMMEL', or RIDGEF'IELD, INEWEIERSEY.
SELF-IGNITING-MATCH CONTAIlIER.
Applicationfiled May 3; 1922. lSerial 1W1;553,141.
To all whom a may concern: r 7
Be it known that I, JENNY TIMMEL, a citizen of Germany, reslding at Ridgefield,
in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Igniting-l/Iatch @Containers, of which the following is a specification. v
The main object of this invention is the provision of a pocket match container or safe having means whereby a match is ignited upon withdrawal.
parts in the drawings.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters. of reference refer to like-named Referring briefly to is a perspective view of my container which may be inserted in any common pocket match safe.
compartment 3v between the edge 2 and back 1. Upon the upper portion of the inner sur face of the edge 2 is secured a wedge-shaped tongue extending the width of the edge? and having its exposed surface roughened or serrated, as shown.
A vertical slot 5 1s provided in the back member 1, said slot communicating with ahorizontal slot 5 A; rod 6 is pivotally mounted at 6? tothe inner side of the hollow back .1, 'saidmember being movable in a transverse direction in the slot 5. .A horizontal strip 7 is pivotally attached to the.
lower extremity of the rod 6, and is trans versely movable in the slot 5?. A resilient tongue 8 is secured within the hollow back 1 and urges the rod 6 outward.
The device as thus far described may be placed within any ordinary pocket match safe 9 having the usual cover 10. When the container is to be'filled with matches, the
same is removed from the safe 9, the member the drawings, Fig. 1
7 is forced back into theslot 5 against the force of the tongue 8, and the matches are stacked between thebackl and edge 2' in the compartment 3. Then the member 7. is released, whence the same will be "urged gainst thefmatches so that, when a match 1s withdrawn, its head will engage. the
roughened surface of the tongue t, so that the match will be ignited.
If desired, the container 12 maybe used 7 j asa'match safe per se'by providing Walls a i j which will enclose the two ends of the com:
par't'ment 3.
simple and practical match container and safefrom which a match may be withdrawn in ignited condition so that the usual strik-u ing of the match is eliminated.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a hollow backinembenhaving its lower edgebent into'subst'antially the form p I I V match-holding compartment, said. compart of a U in cross-section, so as to provide a ment beinginsertable into a. match safe, a
substantially wedge-shaped tongue'having.
an exposed, roughened edge, saidtongue bemember, and resilientmeans in the hollow Y back' for normally urging said. matches ing secured to' 'said lower edge'of the back against said roughened edge '2. A device of the: class described ,co'm-j prising a hollow back member having its as: a
lower edge bent into substantiallythe form of a U in crosssection, so as to-providie a match'holdi'ng compartment, a substantially wedgeeshaped tongue having an exposed,
roughened edge, saidtongue beingsecuredto said lower edge, and resilient means for normally urging said matches against said roughened edge comprising a substantially T- sh aped slot in said back'member, a rod piv- I otally mounted within said back member 7 j and transversely movable in the stenrportion oi said T-slot, a member rigid with said rod I and transversely movabl'ein the arm portion of said T-slot, said member lying in en gagement with the matches. and a resilient tongue urging said member against} said matches. g I? p In WltIiGSS whereof I afiix my si nature- JENNY TIMM L, l
