Description

WITNESSES.
l. M. GARRETT.
Cotton-Choppers. v No! 146 061 P at ented De' c. 30,1873,
INVENTOR;
UNITED STATES JOSEPH M. GARRETT, OF BRENHAM, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-CHOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,061, dated December 30, 1873; application filed August 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. GARRETT, of Brenham, in the county of Washington and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cotton-Choppers; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my machine in plan view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
My invention relates to the class of machines used for cultivating and chopping cotton; and it consists in the construction and. novel arrangement of parts, whereby a simple, cheap, durable, and effective machine for the purposes designed is obtained.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a sulky-frame, with tongue B, axle O, and driving-wheels D D. On the inner side of each wheel D is a grooved pulley, a,
a connected by a belt or cord, 1), with a pulley,
d, on the end of a shaft, E, which is situated in suitable boxes near the front end of the frame A. On this shaft is placed a beveled cog or miter wheel, G, gearing with a similar wheel, G, on the front end of a shaft, H, which runs longitudinally under the frame A in suitable bearing-bars I I. On the rear end of the shaft H are attached two slotted bars or shanks, J J, each having a hoe, e, on its outer end. The
shanks J J can be extendedorcontracted at will, thus adjusting the hoe-blades e 6 out and in, as desired." K is a lever, pivoted to the main frame A, and its lower end forked, grasps a clutch, f, on the shaft E, to move said clutch close to or away from the miter-wheel G, and thus make the same revolve with the shaft or not, as desired; or, in other words, throw the revolving hoes in and out of gear. Under the frame A is hung a threesided rectangular frame, L, the rear end of which is open and the front end closed, bears against the under side of the front'cross-bar in the frame. To the rear end of this frame are attached cultivator-plows M, of any suitable construction.
N is a lever, pivoted to the front endof the main frame A, and connected, by a bar, h, with the swinging frame L, inwfront of its point of attachment, by means of which the plows may be raised out of the ground when desired. a
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination w] from the traction-wheel D D, the swinging frame L, plow-standard M, lever N, and con-i th the frame A, carrying a cotton-chopper operated by belted gearing
