l.. F. EASTON LOOKING DEVICE EOE MOTOR VALVES Filed Aug. 20. 1921 INH Zravcnm` M Z M2511 I hereof.
Patented July 3, 1923.
y UNITE s'im'as LOCKING` DEVICE FOR MOTOR VALVES. i
Application led August 20, 1921.
To all rwhom t may concern.
Be it known that I, LUCLAN F. EASTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and venting valves for motors from droppingl into the cylinders when they are'not held in place by spring tension and its object is to provide a simple and efficient locking device for this purpose.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a section illustrating the locking device as applied to an overhead valve motor. Fig. 2 is a perspec tive of one member of the locking device and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the other member of the locking device. Fig. 4 is a section of a modified form of the invention. Figs. 5 and 6 are perspectives of the locking members shown in Fig. 4.
The invention is exemplified in connection with a valve 8 which is mounted in an engine-casing 9 and is adapted to control the delivery of fluid to an engine cylinder or the exhaust therefrom. Valve 8 is provided withv a\stem 10 which is slidably mounted in the casing 9, as well understood in the art. A. suitable operating member, suchA as a rocker-arm 11, is adapted to engage the upper end of the stem to open the valve and a spring` 12 is applied to the stem to close the valve as well understood in the art. The upper end ofthe spring engages a head 13. The stem 10 passes through the head 13 and is provided with a peripheral groove 14 which is adapted to receive a locking mem- 'ber 15 which is provided with an open ended slot 16, so that it may be placed on the stem and interlocked therewith after the head 13 has been placed on the stem. The open ended slot 16 permits said member to be inserted transversely into and removed transf versely from the groove 14 and fits into the groove so that it will be locked against lon- 'tudinal movement on the stem, the ends of ie groove serving as shoulders or abutments for the faces of said locking member. A ring 17 is provided with a hole 18 to receive the valve-stem, is adapted to fit on ters Patent, is
Serial No. 493,975.
the top of locking member 15 and is provided with an annular flange 19 which extends around the member 15 and secures it against transverse movement relatively tothe stem. If desired, a cotter pin 20 is inserted through valve-stem 10 above the lock ingdevice to hold the ring 17 on member 15.
In practice, it sometimes occurs that the spring 12 loses its tension or becomes broken and when that occurs the locking member 15 would no longer be held against transverse movement by the pressure exerted on the head 13 by thesprin 12 and, as a result, it would 'become disp aced and permit the valve-stem to drop into the cylinder and cause damage there. By providing the locking member 17, the slotted member 15 will adapted to be locked to the valve-stem to prevent it from dropping into the cylinder when the spring for closing the valve is not under tension. v
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 1. The combination with a valve p-rovided with a stem, a casing, a spring held by the casing at one end applied to shift the valve in one direction and a head on the stem serving as an abutment for the other end of the spring, of a. member on the outer end of said head formed to interlock with thestem so as to be held against longitudinal movement thereon and having an open-ended slot to permit it to be placed around the stem, and a locking ring forA closing the slot to secure the' slotted member against transverse displacement from the stem.
f valve in one direction and a head on the stem serving as an abutment for the other end of the spring, of a member on the outer end of said head formed to interlock with the stem so as to be held against longitudinal movement thereon and having an openended slot to permit it to be placed transversely on and around the stem and a ringmember for locking the slotted member against transverse displacement, one of said members being formed to fit into the other.
3. The combination with a valve having a stem provided with a groove, and a head on the stem, of a locking member for the head to prevent its removal from the stem having an open .ended slot to permit it to be placed transversely around the stem and into said groove, and a ring encircling the stem and formed to secure said member against transverse displacement from the stem.
4. The combination with a valve having a stem provided With a groove, a casing, a spring held by the casing at one end applied to shift the valve in one direction and a head on the stem serving as an abutment for the other end of the spring, of a member on the outer end of. said head, formed to interlock with the stem so as to be held against longitudinal movement thereon and having an open-ended slot to permit it to be placed transversely around the stem and ittmg in said groove, and a rin -member extending `around the stem and ormed to close said slot and secure said member against transverse displacement from the stem, one of said members having a recess in which the other is held.
