Application filed m y T 0 (all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUcIAN R. OAKns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tipton, in the county of Tiptonand State of 5 Indiana, have invented'certain new and use ful Improvements in Feed Troughs for Chicks, of which the following is aspecification.

This invention relates to feed troughs and is designed primarily for feeding very small chicks, one object of the inventionbeing in forming the body of the trough in one piece, the ends of which are soconstructed that one trough will nest within'the other while being shipped.

A further feature of the invention is in so constructing the ends of the trough that the covering for the trough will extend downwardly at an angle from the longitudinal central line of the cover.

A further feature of the invention is in so constructing the cover that it can be readily engaged with or disengaged from the trough.

And a still further feature of the invention is the provision of openings in the cover through which the chick may extend its head for receiving the food within the trough.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the accompanying specification.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the trough, which is preferably constructed of sheet metal, the ends 2 thereof being integral with the bottom and side walls of the body, the central portions of said end sections being preferably higher than their extremities so that said ends will taper downwardly in each direction from their centers to the point of their connection with the side walls of the body 1, and as the troughs are preferably stamped out, the ends 2 are provided with a plurality of convolutions or corrugations 3 which compensate for and take-up the excess metal occasioned by the shaping of the ends of the trough. the trough and thereby wasting or destroymg food contained therein, a cover 4 is placed over the trough, said cover being inclined downwardly from its longitudinal center in conformity with the inclination of the top edges of the ends 2, the said edges of the cover having flanges 5 which are soarranged as to have sliding engagement with the side walls 6 of the body 1 and as said side walls are preferably flared outwardly, the cover 4 will be securely held in position over the trough. Each inclined face of the cover 4 is provided with a plurality of openings 7 which are preferably oblong and of such dimensions that the fowl may enter its head through the opening to obtain the food within the trough, but such fowl cannot bodily enter the trough thereby protecting the food against wastage and adulteration. The cover 4 is also preferably stamped and made in one piece, and in order to reinforce the cover and prevent the same being mashed in, a longitudinal rib 8 is formed at the apex of the cover, and radiating from this rib are transverse ribs 9 which extend from the rib 8 to points adjacent the outer edges of the cover.

If preferred, the ends of the cover 4 may be provided with serrations 10 which correspond to and fit over the ends of the corrugations of the end 2 of the body portion 1, consequently the ends of the cover will have the same symmetrical outline as the ends of the body of the trough.

In placing food within the trough the cover 4 may he slipped endwise from off the trough and after the food is placed within the body 1 the cover may be returned to position over the body, and by forming the side walls 6 of the trough relatively lower than the end walls and inclining the walls of the cover, the lower ends of the opening 7 will be relatively nearer the ground, consequently a very small chick may obtain food from the trough.

Having thus fully, described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a feed trough, a body having integral outwardly flared ends and side walls, the side walls of which are of less height than the height ofthe ends, the top edges of said end walls being inclined downwardly from their centers, a cover having flanges thereon for holding the cover in position over the body, said cover being inclined from its longitudinal center to its outer edges and said inclined portions having a plurality of openings therethrough, slagid inclined top edges of the end Walls fitting against the inclined faces of said cover.

2. In a feed trough, a body having integral side and end Walls, which are outwardly flared from their lower to their upper ends, said ends being substantially semi-circular in horizontal section, each end Wall having a plurality of corrugations, and a cover for said body, said cover being inclined from its longitudinal center toits outer edges, the top edges of the end Walls extending above the side Walls and having their top edges inclined at substantially the same inclination as the inclined portions of the cover and closing the spaces at the ends of the cover, the ends of the cover having the same curvature as the curvature of the top edges of said end Walls.
