GILBERT L. HARVEY, `OIE' PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SWAB STOPlPER. ,f Y
Application med Novemier sf, ieee. ,n serial 422,539.
To @ZZ w hom. 'it may concern Be it known that I, GILBERT L. HARVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented Swab Stoppers, oi which the following is a specification.
In making sterile hypodermic injections it is absolutely necessary that the site of injection, the hypodermic needle, and the 1o solution to be injected shall all be maintained in an'aseptic condition.
@ne object of my invention is to provide an improved puncturable closure ttor a container holding liquid intended for hypol5 dermic injections, which while effectively closing the container, shall be especially adapted to itself enclose a swab saturated with an antiseptic solution which will maintain in an aseptic condition that particular part of the closure adapted to be punctured by the needle of a hypodermic syringe when it is desired to withdraw liquid from said container; said swab being alsov adapted for sterilizing the needle of the hypodermic syringe and also the patients skin at the site of injection, thus eliminating the necessity of having at hand a separate container of antiseptic solution and a swab for this purpose.
I further desire to provide a no-vel form of closure including an applicator, pref erably in the form of a swab, with novel means whereby said swab is normally maintainedv isolated from the material within the container and at the same time kept ready for use in applying or delivering such material.
These objects and other advantageous ends I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which the figure is a longitudinal vertical section of a bottle showing my invention as applied thereto.
In the above drawings, 1 represents a bottle or other container having removably mounted in its neck a hollow outwardly flanged closure 2, which while it will be made of any suitable material, in one form of my invention is constructed of soft rubber so that its bottom portion 3 may be easily punctured by the needle o'l a hypodermic syringe.
Removably mounted in this closure 2 is a hollow upwardly projecting stopper 4 preferably having a flange extending over the flanged upper edge of the closure 2 within which it extends and designed to receive an elongated applicator in the form of a swab yor caused to dip into antiseptic material `which is contained within the hollow of the closure 2.
Under conditions of use the stopper 4 with the attached swab may be withdrawn from the closure 2 and said swab applied to a hypodermic needle or to a part of the human body to render the same aseptic. Obviously the antiseptic material within the hollow of the closure 2 or the saturated swab maintains the bottom portion of this free Jfrom micro-organisms, so that after the removal of the stopper 4 with the swab 6, the needle of a hypodermic syringe may be forced through said portion into the bottle 1, from which the liquid may be withdrawn by operating the syringe in the well known manner. v
Not only may the hypodermic needle be perfectly cleaned and rendered antiseptic by the use ot' the swab 6, but obviously the introduction of said needle into the container neither contaminates the needle nor the contents of said container.
I claim:
1. The combination of a closure for a medicinal solution container, said closure having a portion puncturable by a needle point; and an applicator carried by and enclosed within said closure.
2L The combination of a container for a medicinal solution; a hollow closure therefor having a portion puncturable yby a needle point; a stopper normally closing an opening into said closure; and an applicator carried by the stopper within the hollow of the closure. t
3. The combination of a `container for a medicinal solution; a hollow closure therefor formed to extend into said container and 'having its lower portion of material punc- 5. The combination of a container for a medicinal solution; a closuretherefor; and an applicator attached to the closure'and isolated from the interior of the container 5 by a member puncturablc by a needle point.
6. The combination of a container; a holloW closure therefor having a portion Con-v opening into said closure; and an antiseptic 10 swab within the closure'. 1
7.Tlie combination of a riibber closure for a medicinal solution container, said closure being)r in the form of a container and being puncturable by a needle point; a 15 stopper for said closure; and an applicator carried by the stopper Within the closure.
GILBERT L. HARVEY.
