NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS E. STEVENSON, F MOUNT GILEAI), OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE HYDRAULIC PRESS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF MOUNT GILEAD, OHIO.
SEMIAUTOMATIC TABLE-MOVING ATTACHMENT FOR PRESSES.
Application tiled November 19, 1921. Serial No. 516,509.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. STEVEN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Gilead, in the county of Morrow and State of 0hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Semiautomatic Table-Movin Attachments for Presses, of which the foowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for use with the work carryin table of a hydraulic or other press, where y said table may be moved to and from an operative position by means which is started by the operator, but is automatically stopped at the termination w of each movement whether this is from operative to inoperative position of said table or vice versa. v
There is employed a rotary member between which and a source of power an oper- 2 ative connection may be manually effected at will, and connections between said rotary member and the work carrying table whereby the rotary movement of the member is converted into a reciprocatory movement of the table.
More specifically these connections. comprise a crank head mounted to rotate both with and on said rotary member and a link capable of longitudinal and rotary movement connecting the crank head and the Work carrying table. f
Detent means, specifically a toggle lock, is provided for holding the parts in operative position after being manually set, and the rotary member carries means for automatically breaking said toggle lock at the termination of a predetermined movement of the rotary member.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan View, with parts in section;
Figure 2 is a vertical section;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the attachnient on a larger scale;
Figure 4 is a vertical view of the parts shown in Fig. 3, also on a larger scale;
Figures 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are plan views, somewhat diagrammatic in character, showing successive steps in the movement of parts of the device as the table isv moved from operative to inoperative position.
rll`he particular t pe of press to which this attachment is app ied forms no part of the invention and there is illustrated only genrallQy an upper member 1 and a platen mem- The work carrying table 3 which is adapted to be reciprocated to a position between said press members, and to another position entirely free thereon, has a slot 4 along one edge in which engages a roller 5 on a pin 6 carried =by the end of an arm 7. This table travels on rollers 8 carried by the platen member, and rollers 9 attached to the housing 10, which contains the operating mechanism for the table 3.
A pin 11 is rigidly mounted in a hub 12 carried by the housing 10, and keyed or otherwise fixed to said pin is a stationary gear 13. Meshing with the gear 13 is a gear 14 keyed or otherwise attached to a crankhead 15 so that they rotate in unison upon a pin 16 rigidly held in a plate 17 which rotates upon the pin 11 beneath the fixed gear 13. The crank-head 15 carries a pin 18 to which is attached the end of the arm 7. This arm has a slot 19 which engages a roller 20 on the upper end of the in 11.
lt is thus seen that t e pin 16, ear 14,
crank-head 15, and pin 18, with attac ed end of the arm 7 all rotate about the pin 11.
Keyed or otherwise rigidly attached to the plate 17 is a worm wheel 21. Located adjacent said worm wheel is a shaft 22 mounted in two bearings 23 and 24. rlhe bea-ring 23 is in the form of a U-joint, having two projecting pins 25, only one of which is shown, engaging in suitable bearings. The bearing 24 is of similar character, having pins 26 held by forked projections on the bar 27, which is slidably mounted in the j housin 10. rlhe shaft 22 carries a worm 28, norma ly disengaged from the worm gea-r 21. Rigidly attached to the bar 27 is a rod 29 provided with a handle 30. A spring 31 is coiled about the rod 29 and held between the front of the housing 10 and nuts 32 on said rod, and normally holds the parts in the dotted line position shown in Figure 2.
A link 33 is pivoted at 34 to the housing 10, and at its other end at 36 to one arm of a bell-crank member 35, which is in turn pivoted to the bar 27 at 37. The link 33 and said arm of the bell-crank form a toggle member.
@n the rotating plate 17 are pins 38, one
, press members, the operator pulls out. the
The operation of the handle has moved the bearing 24 of the shaft 22 to such an extent that the worm 28 is moved into engagement with the worm gearv 21. lThe motion of the Worm is .therefore transmitted to the gear 21 and produces a rotary movement of the plate 17. Since this plate 17 carries the pin 16, said pin together with the gear 14, the crank-head 15, and the pin 18 carried thereby, are all given a rotary nio-vement about the pin 11. The end of the'arm 7, which is attached to the pin 18, also has a rotary movement. Furthermore, as the gear 14 meshes with the fixed gear 13, said gea-r and crank-head 15 have an additional movement of rotation about the pin 16 upon the plate 17.
. One end of the arm 7 accordingly rotates about the pin 16, and with the pin 16 about the pin 11. The arm is permitted to move in the path necessitated by this double move'- ment because of the slot 19 and becausethe opposite end of the arm may travel alo-ng the slot 4 inthey table 3.
.Successive steps in the operating movements are shown in Figures 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The gear 13 has just twice as many teeth as the gear 14, so that a halt` revolution oi the plate 17 will result in a full revolution of the gear 14 and crank-head 15. When onequarter'of the movement of the plate 17 .has
taken place, the gear 14 and crank-head 15 have moved through a half revolution. or
from the Figure 5 to the Figure 7 position. When the plate 17 has completed a half revolution, the parts will have arrived at the Figure 9 position. At this time, one of the pins 38 has engaged the upper arm of the bell-crank-35 as indicated in Figure 2, and by its pressurethereagainst breaks the toggle formed by the other arm of the bellcrank and the link 33 and permits the spring 31 to return the bar 27 and shaft-bearing 24 to the position shown in Figure 3, thus disengagingthe,wormA from the Worm gear, and
ioperative position, the handle 30 is operated again, and the resulting movement brings the parts from the position shown in Figure 9 to that of Figure 5, thus moving the table in the opposite direction,
The table has a free movement as it overlies the parts of the operating mechanism. The roller moved in the path of an approximate ellipse during a complete rotation of the plate 17, and this permits the use of' a narrow table and housing.
The device is semi-automatic. in its operation, since it needs only to be started, and stops automatically at the end of the desired movement.
The invention is not limited in its applica.- tion to any specific form of press, but may be used to supply work to machines of different types whenever a movement of the character described is necessary or desirable.
