Description

June 12, 1923. v 1,458,575
W. L. GRAUL ET AL DISCHARGING PLATFORM FOR COKE OVENS Filed March 19, 1920 ATTORNEY Patented June 12, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT oF cE.
nrsorrnnerne rnnrronrr For. COKE ovens.
Application filed March 19, 1920. Serial No 367,072.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, "WALTER L. GRAUL and REGINALD HaTowLnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Jayne and State of Michigan, have invented. a new and Improved Discharging Platform for Coke Ovens, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the platform extending along the discharge side of a block of coke ovens across which the coke passes when discharged from the ovens. Heretofore such platforms have been disposed horizontally in order to provide means of access to the discharge end of the ovens and the coke in being pushed from the ovens has been pushed across the platform and then dropped horizontally into a receiving car, a considerable amount of hot coke being thus left on the platform and required to be afterward shoveled ofl.
The object of our improvements is to provide a self discharging platform and at the same time provide a safe and convenient means of access for the workmen to the discharge end of the ovens.
v To this end our invention consists in providing a discharge platform which extends along the discharge side of a block of ovens and is inclined downwardly therefrom and in combination with this a horizontally disposed platform by which access to the ovens can be had, the parts of which immediately in front of each. oven are arranged to be removable so as not to interfere with the discharge of coke from the ovens.
The invention will be best understood from the accompanying drawings, illustrating an embodiment thereof, Fig. 1 of which shows a front elevation of the device, Fig. 2
shows a section on the line 2-2 Fig. '1, Fig. 3
shows details on an enlarged scale of the railing of the horizontal platform or path and Fig. 4 shows details of the pivotal support of the movable sections of the horizontal platform. Referring to the drawings, A, indicates the discharge end of a series, or
block of coke ovens, to which is secured the downwardly inclined discharge platform, B, which runs along the ovens immediately below the discharge oven doors and is upheld by suitable supports as, b. I
Along the face of the ovens, A, above the discharge platform, B, extends a horizontally disposed platform or path, C. The
platform, O, is composed of sections, D, having suitable supports as, (Z, which are located in front of the spaces between the discharge openings, E, of the ovens, and arefixed in position, and of movable sections, F,
which lie between the fixed sections, D, and are 1n this case rotatably mounted, as on suitably supported axes, f. The space be- .tween each two of the fixed path sections, D,
is occupied by two of the movable sections, F, which span the space in front of one of the discharge openings, E, of the ovens. Each of the movable sections, F, is provided with a hand rail, Gr, provided with suitable supports 9, so placed that when the path sections, F, in front of an oven opening are turned back to permit the discharge of the oven their rails, G, with their supports will pass by the rails of the adjacent path sections on each side as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The path sections, F, when in position in front of the discharge openings of the ovens are suitably supported. as by means of a while the edge of the other section rests on the one thus supported. Other means of supporting the section, F, which will readily occur to those skilled in the art, may, however, be employed.
When the path sections, F, are all in their horizontal position they, together with the path sections D, provide a continuous path along the oven block thus giving the workmen safe and easy access thereto.
When it is required to discharge the coke from an oven the path sections, F, F, with their rails and supports, lying in front of such oven are turned back as shown in the central portion of Fig. 1, and the coke pushed in the usual manner. The discharged coke passes freely down the inclined discharge platform, B, and into the desired receptacle, as a quenching car, indicated at, I, without leaving any material quantity of hot debris. Theremoved sections, F, are then replaced in theirhorizontal position and the'path is ready for use as before.
Havingthus described our invention what ters Patent is l. The combination with a block of coke ovens of a discharge platform extending along the discharge ends of the ovens consupporting foot, H, secured to one of the' we claim as new and desire to secure by Letthe portions thereof opposite the oven openings removable so as to give free access from the oven openings to the inclined platform.
2. The combination With a block of coke ovens of a discharge platform extending.
along the discharge ends of the ovens consisting of a platform inclined downwardly from the oven Wall and a railed horizontal platform adjoining the oven'Wall and extend ing along the oven block above the inclined 15 platform and having the portions thereof opposite the oven openings removable so as to give free access from the oven openings to the inclined platform said removable portions being supported at their free end by a pivotedmember resting in a seat on the inclined platform.
In testimony whereof We have afiiXed our signatures, this 26th day of February 1920.
.WALTER L. GRAUL.
REGINALD H. TOWLER.
