To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES GREY, a
'citizen of the United States, residing at East Ora-nge, county of Essexyand State of New vJersey, have invented a certain new and usefu .Die-Casting Apparatus, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention is a die casting apparatus, and, s aking generally, the functional the invention are to simplify the mechanism employed, render the same more automatic, and, otherwise increase its efliclusive ones, may be mentioned the following.
main working parts of the machine in such manner as to enable the same .to bev manipulated with less operators than are ordi- .narly required; to minimize the number of 'operations required in completing the ereby materially increasing the output or lproduction of the machine; vto so A position arts of themaf` and arrange the several u chine as to materially diminish the liability of accident to an operator; to seco-ordinate the operation of the different mechanisms as to' render such operations simultaneousv and capable of manipulation through a common vpower mechanism; to provide the machine with anew type ofsprue mechanism soarranged as to -forma conduit for the-metal from .the pressure pot to the'die; to provide mechanism for the breaking or disrupting; ofthe sprue prior to the opening of the die, thereby obviating any strain on the casting incident to the breaking oli' of the sprue; to operate the several parts of the working mechanism in substantial synchronism, and without the necessity of any nicety of mechanical adjustment between the parts@ to provide especially efficient cooling means for the plate which supports the sp1-ue side of the die; to provide means for guiding the nozzle of the pressure into correct operative position for feeding metal to the'die, to provide means whereby' the main operating mechanisms are actuated pneumatically; andto so arrange the operating mechanisms that they are positioned rearwardly` of, or .at the opposite side, of the fixed die supporting late from the'side thereof which supports t e die, thereby rendering the die more accessible and permit- 'trative only, and lof the invention.

operation. The gate or s rue forming passageis generally -located fn one of the two `main .sections of the die, and suitable ejecv tor mechanism is usuallylocated in the other 'e section of said die. r
In carrying out the present invention, these two sections of the die are supported on separate plates between which relative movement may -be .effected for the purpose l0 of openin and closin the die, and, 1n order that the ollowingv escri tion of the Amachine may be clarified, will hereinafter term that section ofthedie with whichf the sprue is associated, Athe sprue-die section,
and theplate which carries said section, the spruedie sup. orting late. Similarly, the die section w ich em odies the ejector `mechanism wilf'be hereinafter termed fthe ejectorfdie section, and the plate which su In the accompanying drawings, 1 desig- 'natesthe base'of the` machine, onthe opposite ends of which base'are mounted upright frames 2`and 3.v The frames 2 and 3 are securely bolted to the base andare held in s aced` relation longitudinally of the ma.- c ine byI hollow tubular spacers 4. On the outer face of theframe 3 is mounted a plate fixed to the frame, as clearly shown inv 5 Bzigure 5, by means of bolts 6, which extend in ears formedmn the plate 5. Vertical adjuStmentOf the\p`late 5l may. be had through adjustment of sald'plate mayv be had through the adjusting bolt 8, the slots through which the bo ts 6 pass-serving to allow of such adjustment The plate 5 constitutes the sprue-die supporting plate; This sprue-diesupporting te -member is water cooled by water passm through the connections 17 and 18, vin* or er to keep the die at a working temperature and'also to keep the sprue channel at alproper temperature in the event that the i intermediate water 'acketed member '59;
hereinafter describe is not employed. While efforts have been made. along these lines, a plate ofthe general ty shown has e sprue-die` is carried by. plate 5 and is designated in the drawings by the reference Vnumeral 9. 'The sprue-die 9 is secured to the with die 9 and are' rigidly clamped in position by bolts 11, as shown in Figure 3. IThe plate -5 is slotted 4as at 12 to allow of the passage Vof the bolts 11 through 'said plate,

`ports it, the ejector-die supporting plate through elongated slots in the frame `3 .and fticular type of pressure the threadedadjusting bolts 7 while lateral` plate 5 by means of 'clamps 10 which engage Mounted on the basel and between the frames 2 and 3 isa source of molten metal supply 14 which is contained with@ a crucible 15 forming part of a furnace 16 supported on the base 1. In this molten metal part of' into the die by meansof any desired form of the usual t eejector die section, the whole being attached to the ejector die supporting late 25, which is mounted on, and supporte its entire and pass through the hol ow spacers lengltah '4. y mounting the ejector-die supporting b four rods 21, which extend longitudinali. 'of the machine for substantiall plate -25 in the manner described, the ejectordie 19 issupported for movement toward and away from the s rue-die 9, for the u rv pose of opening an closinf theV die. he
late 25 is provided with s ots correspondlng to the slots 12 of the plate 5, and for .the
same purpose.
The invention is not restricted to any par-- lplot or its mounting or operating means, as t e operatin wou d vary with tiltin pots over t at em'- loyed for lthose of t e non-tilting'type.
owever, for purposes ofillustration a e of tle non-tilting ty e is shown and suita means operating means is 1 lustrated toactuate the same. c Y Extending longitudinally .of the between thesframes 2 and v3, and at-eith'er which are' 4slidably mounted two hangers 23 and 24, best shown in.Figures 6,' 8 and 9.
On the hanger 23 is supported a 'pressure pot 25. The hanger 23 has a depending portion which is pivotally secured tothepressure pot by thepin 27, while-'pivotal @movement ofl the pot on this pin "1s lcontrolled by a lthreadedfa'djustiii'g stem 28, pivoted to the .pot at 29, and' extendingup- ;ward1y through a transverse portion 30 of the hangery 23, Nuts 31 are associated with the threaded stem 28, and
lation, 'the `ressure pot may justed on t e pin 27 to bring the nozzle 32 inlet c aimel 33` of the sprue-die section.
The pot and pooll 14 are 4so associated with veach .other and with the die, that .the pot'- `is iat al1 times partially submerged in the molten metal pool 14, as shown in i Figure 8,

and 9, but, through tlie mounting of the pot on'the Hanger 23, said pot' is ada ted for4 y sliding-movement on the guides 22 oml the' castingkposition of'Figure 8, wherein 'the is invcasting relation to the die, to the ,Y positionof Figure 9, Wherein'it is shown asv 1n retracted fi ing position, and vice lversa. Suitable means may be provided for directly operating upon the hanger 23 to so move t-he I pot,- but, inthe preferred embodiment of the invention, -this movement is accomplished through intermediate means in the form of the hanger 24, which, as already described, is alsoY slidably` mounted on the guides V22.
'It will be noted from the drawings, that those portions of the brackets which directly engage with! the guides 22 are in interfittingl relation, one of t-he guide engaging bosses of hanger 24 occupyinga position y between the guide engaging members of the ment of onel hanger without effecting the movement of the other, so that there may be said to be, in effect, lost motion between saidvhangers which has a particular advantage hereinafter more fully set forth.
'As stated, the hanger 23 serves as a means' for sliding the pot, and is, in turn, slid back andforth on the guides 22 by a air of racks l fwhich are connected throng adjustable l turnb'uckles 36 to trunnions 34 projecting the rack, when reciprocated, serves to 4oscillaterally from the hanger 24, as vshown in Figures 10 and 11. The racks 35 are operated from the same source of power as are thejrods 21, and in the preferred embodiment of this invention, the prime mover Consists in pneumatic means. r v
S'uperimposed on the frame 2 with their axes extending transversely of the machine are apair of cylinders 37, having pistons 38 and 39, oneof which is associated with each'cylinder. The .pistons 38 and 39` are rigidly connected to one another by an intermediate rack 40, and are so associated that when one piston is in fully advanced positionythe other isin fully retracted position,

natelyintroduced back of the piston 38 through an inlet 41, and back o f the piston 39 through an inlet42, said compressed air preferably.beingcontrolled from a suitable valve; (not shown) to alternately move the pistons in opposite directions. Through this voperation ofthe pistons the rack 40 is reciprocated and mover of the'machine.

The stems 4S are threaded at their ends to receive ad justing bolts, and between the adjusting bolts and the forward portion of the head 47 are .interposed coil springs 50. ,Thera'cks 49 mesh with gears 51, mounted on a shaft' 52, extending transversely ofthe frame and -journalled forvrotation 1n brackets 53 carried by the frame 2. (See Figures 1, 4, 7,
10 and 11.) Also fixed on the shaft 52 are additional gears 54 with which the racks 35, which control .the movement of the pressure pot, co-operate. v
In the commercial adaptation of the invention, thesprings 50 form an important part since the seating of the nozzle of the pressure pot in the intermediate member is accomplished by the head 47, through the compression of` these springs, so that said s pot is virtually held to its seat by the compression of the said springs which in turn are placed underk compression by said head 47, operated uson by the connecting rod` as des'cribed.- ecause of the fact that the pressure pot is yieldably held to its seat, nicety of adjustment in the operating parts of the machine is rendered unnecessary. If Vnog yielding connections were employed between the prime mover, the pressure pot, v
and the movable die member, a great nicety. of adjustment would be requiredso that the pressurey pot would come into correct casting position at the very instant the die was closed, or vice versa, and if this adjustment were disturbed through wear, or for other reasons, correct casting (3o-action could not be obtained. Through the employment of the yielding connections, lhovvv ever, the pressure` pot 1s normally forced to its lseat slightly before the guide is -fully closed, and the slight subsequent movement required to bring the die into fully closed position is taken up by the springs which,
merely serve to force the tightly to its seat. g As the crank shaft 42 is operated by the rack 40, the connecting rod 45 reci'procatesl the head 47 which results in' reciprocation of the racks 39 and rotation of the shaft 52. The rotation of shaft 52 operates the racks 35 through the gears 54 andshifts hanger 24 longitudinally of the guides 22. The

It is desirable that the pressure which locks the pressure pot in its ejecting posi- Ation be applied so as not to put bending not be used inasmuch ,as the lockin the strain\ on the piessure pot therefore if this pressure is applied as shown only a part of ot is strained during locking and this straln is one' of compresslon. On the other hand, in the preferred method of refilling the pressure pot it is necessary to havethese locking means out of the way when the vacuum ibell 72 is lowered.` If a' tilting pressure pot is usedv a double support need could beacomplished b'y pressure Von the ars 27 and the back and front of pressure pot 26 could be connected by a rib or web. Such a pot could be tilted by extending down the link 73 and utilizing the power of the lever 74 to tilt the pot, although, of course, other forms of tilting means might well be used. v
Simultaneouslywith the operation ofthe pressure pot as described, the'die members are brought together and separated, in a;c
' cord-ance with the movement of the pressure l pot may be brought into direct enga with the sprue-die section 9 'to introduce 55 pot, .by the power applied by the4 prime mover through a cross-head 56, associated with the rods 21, carrying the ejector-die section, land the piston 46, to which the con# necting rod 45 1s secured. The' cross-head 56 is carried by the four rods 21 at the rear end or the machine, and is-clamped upon. said rods by nuts 57 'threaded Vupon the rods, so that the Icross-head is adjustable longitudinally thereof. The centralportion of the cross-head 56 is provided with a lcylindrical chamber 58 -in which is positioned the piston 46, and the cross-head 56 to permitof slight lost motion. This Vlost motion While hereinafter more ully'described, is for the purpose of allowing of thebreaking of the sprue before the die is opened .t0 obviate fractures of the casting due to th breaking of the sprue.
It willthus appear that the prime mover, operating through the connecting rod 45 serves, not only1 to n iove the pressure pot intoand out of castin position, but', simultaneously servesto slide the rods 21 longitudinally of the machine for the purpose of opening and closing the die.

but, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, the machinev is preferably rovided with an intermediate ortion 59 w ich is supported by the fixed p ate 5 for longivmovement relative thereto.
The preferre construction of this intermediate member is shown in 'Figures 14 and -15.` It i's built up of twofcoaxial tubular elements or sleeves 59 and 59bthreadedtogether and which sleeves arechannelled inf teriorly and exteriorly, respectively, to provide an annular-chamber through 'which water or some 'other coolingmedium is circulated through the inlet and outlet pipes 17%- l' and 18, all as clearly vshown in Fi res 8, The water jacket 1s thus formed' which positively preclud the intermediate member from overheating. The intermediate member is provided with a seat 60 adapted to seat in a depression in ,the sprue-die 9, and is in turn provided with an interior seat 61, adapted to receive a seat 62 on the nozzle of the pressure pot.
` Moreover, said intermediate member has a bell-shaped mouth 63 with which is adapted to. co-ope'rateribs 64, formed on the pressure pot. When the pressure pot is brought into casting position, the ribs 64 are adapted `to engage with 'the bell-mouth 63 -before the nozzle enters the pa'age in the intermediate` member leading into -the die opening, and
serves to. guide the lnozzle 62 to its seat on the seat 61.
As stated, the intermediate member is mounted in the plate .for longitudinal movement Iand this movement is-nnpaited to said member by a lever 65. The lever 65 is mounted on a pivot 66 supported on brackets 67, formed on the back plate 5. One arm of the lever 65 extends downwardly and is bifurcated to straddlethe interconclusion of the casting operation, and
while the 'sp'rue is still secured to the die,
the piston 71 is pneumatically operated to impart, through the lever 6 5,` a backward kick to the intermediate member 59` for thepurpose of breaking the sprue, and theparts of the machine are so associated that this breaking of the sprue will take place before n. In this connection, it will be noted that inlet'passage 33 in the sprue-,die section is tapered outwardly, and
4the outlet of the intermediate member 591is similarly formed, so that the sprue is formed l I with a weakened zone at which it is broken when the intermediate member isgiven the dden kick b the lever 65 -as described.
' A'urther vantage of making the sprue- .die inlet tapered is that when the metal -therein `partially solidies,- preliminary to the breaking of the s rue, the force of the klok-referred to will e transmitted to the .tapering wall of lthe inlet 33 which will take the force of vthe blow and will not transmit such force to the casting Within the die.
The pressure pot 26 has beendescribed/ as movable into and out of casting position,
the reason for moving it out of casting position being to allow of the-refilling or recharging thereof. Inpractice, the pot 26 may be filled in various ways, andits construction may be varied from that disclosed lin the drawings, so that it may be tilted is specifically shown and described, but in the present ease, the mechanism for operating the filling mechanism is shown as eoordinating wlth the` remaining operating parts of the machine.
Supported -for vertical movement in the machine is a vacuum bellp72'which is supported by a link`73 from fa lever 74. The lever 74 is fulcrumedl at 75, and -with its short arm is associated a.' rollerf76 adapted -to eng-age with a depending flange of a cam Y plate 77, lfixed on the crank shaft 42. The
, parts of the machine are lso associated Aand timed that when the cam shaft moves to a.
position to retract the pressure pot into the lling position of Figure 9, the low face of the cam 77 comes into operative relation with the lever 74 and causes the vacuum `bell 72 t0. be lowered from the position shown- .in Figure 8 to thatof Figure 9. Timed with this operation airis exhausted from the bell 72 through the connection 78, and
the pressurev'pot is charged as describedl 1n myco-pendingy application. After the ot Vlias'been charged, the bell is again llfted y the'cam 77 to the position of Figure 8,
andthe pressure pot moved forward into casting position. Thereafter, compressed air is introduced into, the pressure pot through the compressed air inlet 80, and
' 2, 3, 4, 8, 14 and 15. .Fluid under pressurey cois-'adrnittedby -a suitable valve, to one ofy serves 't0 force the metal within the pressure pot into the die in the usual manner.
,The consecutive steps in the operation of the machine .will now be4 described, it being I' assumed that the parts jof the machine are in the casting position as shown in Figures l1,
4the cylinders 37 behind the piston 38. The prime moving rack 40 actuates the gear 44, which, through the crank 43, exerts a pull on. the con "ating rod 45. rlhe piston 46 movesforwardly 4`for its lost motion in the cylindrical chamber A58, and carries therewith the head 47, which, through thefracks 49, gears 52 and. 54, and the racks 35 are connected with the hanger 24. Simultaneously with the start of' this operation for retracting the pressure pot, compressed air is admitted behind the piston 71 which operates through link y and lever 65 to give a backward kick tothe intermediate member 59 and break ,the sprue.` By the time the sprue is broken the lost motion of the cylvinder 46 in cross-head 56- iS taken up, andr said piston 46 causes movement of the crosshead `56, which being secured to the rods 21, causes forward sliding movement thereof.A Asthe rods 21 move forwardly, they carry with them the ejector die supporting plate 24, on which the ejector diesection is supported, and thus serve` to separate the' die sections. The pressure pot is thus withdrawn to its retracted position and the die opened.
As the die approaches its full opening, the pressure pot comes into the fully retracted position of Figure 9, at which time the mutilated gears 54, which co-operate with the racks 35, come to the smooth secy tion of the gears, andfurther movement of the pot ceases while the die continuesv to open. As soon'as the pressure pot stops, the cam 77 is timed to drop the vacuum bell 72 over the mouth of the pressure pot, 'as shown in YFigure 9, and the charging ofthe vpot commences. The diecontinues to open for a short distance and reaches itsy maxim0 behind the piston "39 and the die. starts to 105 close, and after it has traveled a short dist-ance, the mutilated gears 54 once more engage with .the racks 35 and start to move the lplressure pot again into casting position.
owever, just before the pot begins to move, the cam 77- operates the lever 74 to raise the bell 72-out of the path of the pot. The
ot continues to move to'casting position, its nozzle being finally guided into the intermediate member 59 by the ribs 64 (Fig- 115 ures 14 and 15), and the ejector-die section 19 is simultaneously lmoved to face abutting relation with the sprue-die section. As soon as the parts become tightly associated for casting, pressure is admitted to the pot, and the molten metal therein is forced into the die, and the cycle of operations as described are recommenced for the next casting.
