J. FAIRLEY FASTENING DEVICE Filed Sefit. 18. 1922 Patented June 12, 1923.
, Jessi: FAIRLEY, or siouxraLLs, sourn DAKOTA; I
teases FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed September 18, 1922. Serial No. 588,943.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, JESSE FAIRLEY, a citizen of the United States. of America, residing at Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices,of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fastening devices and pertains more particularly to devices which are employed for securing the sections of forms used in concrete construction work.
' Ordinarily bolts are employed for securing the form sections together, but sameare objectionable due to the concrete entering and filling the threads, resulting in difficulty in removlng the nuts andoftentimes stripping of the threads in removal.
The primary object of the present invention is therefore to provide a fastening device which is not only devoid of threads and nuts, but which also can be more easily and quickly applied and removed in assembly and separation of the form sections, and which at the same time holds the sections firmly and securely in assembled relation.
The invention still further aims to provide a fastening which can be economically produced and which effects a saving of time in being applied and removed.
Still further and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure l, is a side elevation showing the invention applied in position;
Figure 2, is a top plan view of Figure 1;
Figure 3, is a section on line 8-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4, is a detail perspective view of the fastener.
While the invention is especially devised for and illustrated in connection with concrete forms, it will be apparent that same can be used equally as well in connection with any elements susceptible of connection, and accordingly the angle-irons 1 and 2, with their webs 3 and 4 abutting, are illustrated by way of example of one use of the invention.
The invention embodies preferably a wire member having a bod 5 and laterally bent ends 6 and 7, the who e constituting a somewhat U-shaped structure. The end 6 has its free extremity pointed at 8, while the end 7 is of hooked or J-shapedformation'as dei picted at 9. The material of which the fastener is formed is possessed'of spring properties,-the; end 6 normally having a tendency to lie outwardly at an incline as shown in Figure 4:. v '1' lnoperation, the abutting webs 3 and iars equipped with registering openings '10 to re.- ceive the ends 6, a pair .of fasteners being employed and located in relatively close relation, the ends 6 extending in opposite directions. As shown indotted lines to the left of'Figure 1, the end 6 is first inserted thro'ughthe openingslO-and the body and end '7 then moved downwardly to vcause the hooked end 9 to firmly embrace and clamp the webs 3 and 4: in tight abutting relation, as shown in Figure 3, for whichv purpose the end 9 has a tight or close frictional fit with the webs 3 and t. When the devices are in operative position as illustrated in Figure 1, the bodies 5 occupy an inclined disposition with relation to the longitudinal axes of the angle-irons or other members to be connected and due to the spring action of the end 6, it will be seen that the end 9 and its hook 7 will be constantly urged in a direction away from end 6, or held under tension, and since the body 5 occupies an inclined position, the hook 9 will likewise be held against the outer or free longitudinal edges of the webs 3 and 4.
The end 6 forms a pivot about which the clamping end 9 swings in applying the latter in position.
What is claimed is 1. In a fastener for abutting elements having registering perforations, an approximately U-shaped spring wire member having one end disposed at an incline and pointed and formed to be received in the perforations, and a hook-like part on the other end formed to embrace and frictionally engage opposite faces of the elements so as to clamp the lattertogether, the body of the member bein at an incline to the longitudinal axes of the elements when in operative position.
2. In a fastener for abutting elements having registering perforations, a spring wire member having one end formed to engage through the perforations and having means on its opposite end to be forced over.
and frictionally engage and clamp the members together.
