To aZZwlw-mit may concern:
- Be itknown that I, MA'r'rrIEw. AJ)ii:\i,:a citizen'of the United States, residing'i' n Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State ofPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sifting Devices, whereof the following is a. specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I
'The invention relates to sifting devices such as may be advantageously employed in sifting ashes, gravel, etc. Y
, The purpose of the present invention is to provide a sifting device which is simple in construction and operation, and by which the sifting may be accomplished by aid of a. washing liquid, in a sanitary and efficient manner without liberation of any dust what ever.
The invention is further directed to a sifting device operative upon the principle above noted, and which comprehends certain novel structural characteristics by which dissemblage of the various constituent parts may be readily effected to permit charging and discharging, and the removal from time to time ofthe sittings.
In the drawings, Fig. I,'is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a sifting device'conveniently embodying my invention;
Fig. II, is a vertical cross sectional view. of the same along the plane of the arrows IIII in Fig. I. Fig. III, is a detail sectional view indicated by the arrows III I II in Fig. II. I
In it simplest form, my invention con sists essentially of a receptacle 1, containing a washing liquid, and which I will term for convenience a precipitating tank; and a sieve 2, for the material to be sifted, said sieve being capable of movement within the tank in such manner that the sifting of the dust or the finer particles from the more bulky contents of the material may be accomplished by what may be termed aileacliing action of the washing liquid. -I have found that the process of sifting in accordance with theabove principle may be eft'ect-,
ed most efficiently by intermittently steeping the sieve and its contents into the washing liquid. Such motion of the sieve may be obviously effected in a number of different ways, one construction which has been found thoroughly satisfactory in practice having been arbitrarily I chosen :for the purposes of illustration-herein. j; I
i IASZZQZ Referring once more'to the will be observed that the sieve fisfmountedto revolve about an eccentric axis, consisting of a shaft 3,.wl1ich ,is journalled in notchesat, 4, formed-,inthe upper. edgesoftlm-side walls of the tank By. this construction, .the sieve .may be readily removed bodilyifor charging or discharging At oneside of the device, theshaft' 3, Is provided with a crank handle 5, and upon the other side with a collar 6, the latter being cooperative with the J hub of the. crank handle in preventing lateral displacement of the sieve mounting with respect to the sidewalls of thetank. The sieve is preferably of a substantially semi-circular cross section, and provided with cover lids 7 7 ,which may be attached in any desired manner. In the present instance, these cover lids are hinged about the shaft 3, and adapted to be held closed by spring latches 8, 8. In oper.--
screen 10, of fine wire mesh, said screen being disposed adjacent the bottom of the tank 1, and provided atyits"ends withextended lifting straps, which at their upper ends, are
bent outwardly to form handles 12, 12, adapted to overhang the top edges of the end wallsof the tank 1. The device may be further provided with a removable cover lid 13 for closing the tank 1 and enclosing the rotatable sieve 2. within it, which is preferably curved in form, and provided with handles 15,15, whereby it maybe readily lifted to permit removalof the sieve for loading and unloading as previously noted. I
' Having thus described my invention, I claim: f
1. A sifting device comprising a precipitating tank for a washing liquid; a sieve for the material to be sifted,-adapted to revolve in saidprecipitating tank; and a removable screen for receiving the precipitated siftings, said screen being disposed adjacent the bottom of the tank and provided with extended straps having lateral; handle members overhanging the upper edges of "said tank. I
2. A sifting device comprisingaprecipitating tank for Washing liquid; a closed sieve for the material to be sifted mounted to rotate about an eccentric axis journalled at the upper edge of the tank and readily removable therefrom; and an insert tray in the tank beneath the sieve readily removable upward from the tank after removal of the sieve.
A sifting device comprising, a precipitating tank for containing vas hing liquid, a substantially semi-circular sifter and av shaft mounted in the tank and secured to the sifter at a point coincident withits fiat side, so that when the tank is filled to a level co- I semiqelliptieal sifter having its flat side open and rigidly mounted upon the shaft, and a pair of closure members pivotally mounted upon the shaft by means of interfitting ears engaging the shaft to extend in opposite directions and to close the side of the si-fter. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name at :Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this 24th day .of M-arch, 1920.
