METHOD OF ASSE'MBLING MIDDLE BEARINGS FOR- IN'IERNAL-COMBUSTION MOTORS.
To all whom it may concern A Be it known that I, AUcUs'r H. LEIPERT,
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Assembling Middle Bearings for Internal-Combustion Motors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to an improved middle bearing for internal combustion motors and to the method of assembling the same, and is concerned particularly with the solution of the problem of alining the middle bearing of a pressed steel motor with the front and rear main bearings of the crank case. This problem, in pressed steel construction, is very different from that found ordinarily in cast crank cases and thus far no real practical solution from a production standpoint has been found. It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a method of construction and assembly for the middle bearing in a pressed steel motor which shall insure the alinement thereof with the main bearings, shall conform to the best manufacturing practise both as regards accepted usages in the operations and in cheapness of cost and shall further permit the ready disassembling when necessary.
In accordance with the invention the cross partition in the center of the motor may be of stamped metal and pressed into the shell and a central opening bored therein by a reamer whose axial position with respect to the front and rear main bearings may be definitely determined. The improved bearing plate itself for the crank shaft may be of any approved form such as an aluminum casting with a plain Babbitt bearing therein. This bearing plate in the final assembly may be brought into place with the crank shaft and secured to the center partition where it is held without further adjustment in proper alinement with respect to the main bearings.
The improved construction and method of assembling will be further described hereinafter. In the accompanying drawing there has been illustrated by way of example a pressed steel motor with which the improvements are particularly advantageous. In the drawing Figure 1 is. a fragmentary view in vertical section through the crank case of a pressed steel motor, the crank case and improved center bearing being indicated in proper relation thereto by means of dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a view in transverse section through the pressed steel motor shown in Figure 1 and taken along the plane indicated by the line 22-thereof and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a View in horizontal section through the axis of the crank shaft indicated in Figure 1 and taken along the plane indicated'by the line 3 3 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
The invention not being limited to the form or construction of the motor will be described with reference to the drawing which illustrates in a conventional way mere fragments of cylinders a of a motor placed on a crank case b of conventional form. It
ts true, however, that the improvements are particularly advantageous in connection with a motor having a crank case of pressed metal since the problem of providing a center bearing therein in alineme'nt with the main bearings is very different from that encountered in crank cases of cast metal. In
the illustrated embodiment there is provided a center partition 0 for the crank case which may be of stamped metal and flanged, as at 0', for securing to the side walls of the crank case in proper relation thereto. After positioning the center partition 0, as indicated, the central opening 0 therein is bored out and finished by means of a reamer or other suitable tool introduced through the front and rear main bearings, indicated respectively at 6 b. The axis of the cutting tool during this operation will be maintained coincident wit-h the axis of the bearings b, b and the opening 0 in the center partition 0 will be bored out to a true circle concentric with said bearings. In addition, the partition 0 is also preferably cut with a circular shoulder a concentric with the opening 0 With the center partition thus finished,. after beingsecured in place, the crank shaft (1 with the improved center bearing 6 therefor can be assembled and mounted. The bearing plate e for the crank shaft (1 may be of any approved construction, the invention not being limited in that respect. As illustrated, it may be supposed that the plate e is of cast aluminum and carries therein a plain Babbitt bearing e for the crank shaft.
This invention, however, contemplates that the bearing plate e shall be of true cylindrical form and shouldered on its periphery, as at 6 to conform in shape and size, in a complementary way, to the shouldered cylindrical opening in the center partition 0. The result of this construction is that when the shaft d with the plate 6 is moved into the crank case through the end bearing the plate 6 may be guided into its seat on the center partition 0, the shoulder e conforming exactly to the shouldered portion 0 in the center partition. The plate 6, to permit this assembly, is, in the illustrated embodiment, of less diameter than the opening 5 in the crank case. Bolts 6 or other suitable retaining means may be engaged with the center partition 0 and with the plate 6 to fix the latter in place. \Vhen thus secured, it is evident that since the opening 0 in the partition 0 has been cut out concentrically with the end bearings b, b and since the plate 6 seats snugly within the center opening 0 the bearing for the crank shaft d will support it in alinement with the end main bearings I), b In disassembling. it is evident that the bolts a may be removed and the plate 6 with the crank shaft withdrawn through the bearing 11*.
Changes of details in form and materials may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention provided the principles of construction and assembly are retained.
I claim as my invention:
1. The herein described method to provide a mounting for a center bearing to insure its alinement with the end bearings,
which consists in securing a center partition within the crank case, introducing a cutting.
tool through the end main bearings and boring out a center circular opening in said partition with said cutting tool co-axially with said end main bearings.
52. The herein described method of mounting a center bearing in alinement with the end main bearings which consists in introducing a cutting tool through the end bearings and boring out a center circular opening in the center partition co-axial with said end bearings, forming a center bearing plate for mounting With the bearing therein coaxial with the 'said opening and securing said plate to said partition.
3. The herein described method of mounting a middle bearing in alinement with the end main bearings of a crank case of a pressed steel motor, which consists in providing a stamped metal center partition, securing said partition to the walls of said crank case, introducing cutting tools through the front and rear main bearings to bore out a shouldered center opening of circular form in said partition, said tool operating from the axis of said end bearings, forming a similarly shouldered bearing for the crank shaft of less diameter than one of said end bearings and introducing the crank shaft with said bearing plate through said last named end bearing and securing the shouldered plate on the shouldered seat provided therefor in said partition.
