Be it known that l, HERMAN A. ForrnN- HUsnN, a citizen of the United States. rcsiding` at Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Retarding Members, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to fuel retarding l@ members for furnaces of that type having traveling grates.
Among the objects of my inyention is to construct such member so that it may be wateror liquid cooled and thus have its temle perature reduced below that of the hot ash and clinkers, which move against 1t, to prevent adhesion and accretion of the same thereto. A further object is to mount the fuel retarding member so that the same may be adjusted vertically toward or from'. the fuel supporting surface of the grate in a plane substantially at right-angles to said surface and thus vary the height of the discharge passage for the ash between the same and the grate.
The invention consists further in the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through the rear portion of the combustion chamber of a furnace, and showing a fuel retarding member of my 1nvention located above the grate adjacent its rear end and between the same and 'the bridge wall overhang;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on ce line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and
Figs. 4 and 5 show details of construction to be hereinafter described.
In the drawings, 1, l indicate the side walls of the furnace, 2 the bridge wall, 3 the ende5 less chain grate, and 4 the bridge wall -overhang, which extends forward over and above the rear lend of the grate in furnaces of this' general type. There is also a water back pipe 5 above the grate and beneath the forward edge of the bridge wall overhang, as
shown.
The fuel retarding member 6 of my invention is located above the grate 3 adjacent its Serial No. 346,472.
rear end and between the same and the bridge wall overhang 4 at a point in advance of the place where the ash. or consumed fuel is discharged by the grate over its rear end. ln the type of structure shown, the fuel retarding member 6 is also to the rear of the water back pipe 5, and said member 6 extends across the grate 3 between the side walls 1, 1, as shown in Fig. 2. Said member 6 is so made that it may be water or liquid cooled, and is so mounted that it may be adjusted vertically toward or from the grate for the purpose heretofore stated.
As shown, said member 6, for the purpose of convenient installation, handling, and repair, is made of a plurality of like, separate sections 7, i". Each section is hollow and is divided into two separate compartments or chambers by a. partition wall 8. rlhe seetions 7 are arranged end to end yand each has a rear web or iiange 9. Said sections are connected together and maintained in rigid endwise alignment by a connecting bar 10, which extends lengthwise of the aligned sections to the rear thereof, and secured by fastening members 11 to the webs 9, as shown in Figs. 2 and Extending between the side walls 1, 1 to the rear of the member 6, is a rock shaft, in the form of a pipe 12, to which the member 6 is connected by a plurality of arms 13, 13, one for each section 7. Said arms 13 have their forward ends secured by fastening members 14 to the bar 10, and their inner ends attached to the pipe 12 by a two-part clamp, one part 15 being carried at the rear end of the arm and the free part 16 secured to the first part about the pipe by clamp bolts 17, as shown in Fig. 1.
, By rocking the pipe 12, the fuel retarding member 6 may be adjusted or moved vertically toward or from the fuel supporting surface of the grate 3, in a plane substantially at right-angles to said grate, and to do this manually any suitable form. of mechanism may be employed. One form is shown in the drawings. and it comprises an arm 18 attached by a split clamp 19 to one end of the pipe 12. A counter-weight 20 is mounty ed on said arm and the clamp 19 has another arm 21 carrying a pin 22 to enter any one of a number of circumferentially arranged holes 23 in a plate 24 held in fixed position against the adjacent side wall l. This construction is preferably arranged outside of the furnace, to be conveniently reached and operated, and by the pin 22, the member 6 may be held in any'position of its adjustment.
To circulate a flow of cooling water or other liquid through the hollow sections 7, 7, the upper `chambers of said sections are connected by pipes or conduits 25 arranged at the rear of the isections and extending across the intervals of space between them, as shown. The lower chambers are connected in like manner by pipes 26, and the upper and lower chambers of one of the end sections are connected. by a pipe 2T to secure a return, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. To the opposite end section 7 are connected the supply Aand outlet pipes 28, 29 the former opening into the upper chamber and the latter into the lower chamber of that section. The pipes 28, 29 extend through the adjacent side wall l and are suitably coupled to the cooling water supply and discharge pipes, respectively. By the arrangement shown and described, a continuous flow or circulation, of cooling water or other liquid may be maintained through the fuel retarding member o,` although made in Separate sections, and thus the temperature thereof reduced below that of the hot ash and clinkers, to
prevent adhesion and accretion of the same to the fuel retarding member.
Toallow the inlet and discharge pipes 28, 29 to `move with the member 6 when adjusted vertically, said pipes extend through an arcuate slot 30 inthe side wall, and said slot is closed on the outside by an arcuate plate 32, the ypipes extending through the plate and the latter being connected with the arm 21, which may have a handle 3l to be grasped in .adjustingI the member 6. As shown in the drawings, the sections 7 are ybox-like in shape, although they may be made in other shapes when required. The
range of vertical adjustment of the member 6 is indicated by the full anddotted lines in Fig. 1.

In a furnace, the combination of a combustion chamber, having side walls, a traveling grate therein, a liquid cooled fuel retarding member above said grate adjacent the rear end thereof and extending across .the same, said member terminating short .of said `side walls, said `member 'being formed of a plurality of separate hollow.sections arranged. `end vto end, means connecting said sections together andmaintaining the same in endwise alignment, means providing communication between said sections so that a cooling liquidV mayl be circulated through said member from one section to the other, inlet and outlet pipes connected with a section atene end of the member and extending outward through an arc-shaped: slot in the adjacent side wall, and means to the rear of said 'sections and pivoted to fixed parts of the furnace structure and connected with said sections for supporting and adjusting the same toward and from said grate and resisting the thrust of' the fuel bed against said sections.
5. In a furnace, the combination of a combustion chamber, a traveling grate therein, a. bridge Wall at the inner end of said grate and spaced rearward therefrom, said bridge Wall having a portion overhanging the rear end of said grate, a fixed Water back extending across said grate beneath said overhang and supporting the latter, a liquid cooled fuel retarding member extending across said grate between the same and said overhang and to the rear of said Water back, said member being formed of a plurality of separate hollow sections arranged end to end and in communication with each other so that a cooling liquid vmay be circulated therethrough, means connecting said sections togetherand maintaining the same in endwise alignment, and means to the rear of said sections and pivoted to parts of the furnace structure other than said overhang and connected With said sections for supporting and adjusting the same toward and from said grate and resisting the thrust of the fuel bed against said sections.
