Toall whom it may concern Be it known that I, Misses KHAN, a siibjeot of Amanullah khan, Amir, of Afghanistan, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of ()hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Door and Step Structures, of Which'the following is a specification.
invention relates more particularly to doors and steps for conveyances and operating means for opening and closing them.
The objects of my invention are to provide simple, convenient and efficient means for mounting and operating the doors and steps inunison and in such a manner that the doors will be slidably mounted and concealed within the casing of the body of the conveyance whereby they are prevented from swinging outwardly to cause accidents, and whereby the steps are in position for use in entering; and leaving the conveyance only when the doors are open and are concealed within. the casing of the body when the doors are closed thereby protecting the steps from damage, while at the same time so concealing the steps Within the body of the conveyance as to preventan unauthorized user of the'car, such as a bandit, from. finding an easy method of access to the interior thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby a plurality of doors and steps may be easily moved to opened or closed position either separately or simultaneously. i
Another object of the invention is to permit ingress and egress to and from the conveyance when itis located in a narrow or confined space and also when it is stopped in front of a street lamp or other similar object which would prevent the swinging door from being" opened suiliciently to permit entering or leaving the conveyance.

lhc conveyance which i have used to illussection taken on the trate the embo'din'icnt of my invention is an I automobile l or usual construction except the body 2 which is slightly changed in form and dimensions especially in the front part thereof. 1 provide vertical channels 3 and 4: in the front side walls forward of doors 5 and G to receive said doors when in open position and vertical channels 7 and 8 in the rear side walls to the rear of doors 9 and 10 adapted to receive said latter doors when in open position. I also provide horizontal spaces l1. and 12, below the inner side walls and below the floor i l leading to said channels, respectively. The doors are provided with, wheels 15 mounted upon suitable run-ways 16 in the bottoms of said channels, respectively.
Immediately beneath the floor 17 of the conveyance I provide horizontal space-ways 18. 19, 20 and 21 to receive steps 23, 922, 24 and 25, respectively. and to permit said steps to be entirely concealed therein, as shown in Fig. 5, or to he slid outwardly foir use, as shown in Fig, 4. The floor 17 is provided with two curved slots 20 and 27 and the door and step operating mechanism comprises, on each side, hand operating lever 28 extending upwardly through one of said slots and is pivotally mounted on pivot bar 29 connectedto fixed'pivot 30 Each front connecting bar 31 ispivotally connected to said handle and to intermediate; connecting 3 bar 32 Each front connecting-arm 33 is and is pivotally connected at the other end to lug on front door or 6. It is also pivotally attached between its ends to stud 36 on front step 22 or 25. Each connecting 5 arm 37 is pivotally'connected to intermediate connecting bar 32 at joint 38 and has one end pivoted to lug 39 on doors 9 and 10 respectively, and the other end to stud 40 on rear steps 23 and 2 t, respectively. \Vhen 10 thus connected the handle 28 when moved in the curved slot 26 from the position shown in Fig. at to the position shown in Fig. 5
will draw said doors to closed position and said steps to concealed position and reverse movement of said handle will again cause said doors and steps to assume the position shown in Fig. 4. l
For the purpose of opening and closing: the doors and steps, respectively, from the outside, I provide an opening all on each side having a hinged door 4-2 mounted thereover. A curved handle bar 43 is mounted in said hole and is pivotally attached at joint 3i. It is preferably provided with a suitable pivotally mounted handle all which is adapted to project to the outer surface of the body of the car when in closed position, as shown in Fig. 5 and when the doors are in open position it will extend outwardly and down- \vardly, as shown in Fig. 4;.
It will be seen that the driver can conveniently grasp either hand operating lever 28 and push. it backwardly to the rear end of curved slot 26 or 27 for opening the door and steps and also push it forward-to the front end of the slot to close the same. If he is on the outside of the car and wishes to open the doors and steps he simply pulls on the handle 44 whereupon the door and steps upon one side of the car will be opened and if he wishes to close the doors and steps he simply pushes handle at inwardly until *the doors and steps will be closed,
It will be observed that my construction 45 and arrangement eliminates projecting side handles which serve to catch and tear the clothing and which also mar the beauty of the car. The hinged door may be provided with a suitable lock (not shown) to prevent unauthorized opening of the doors.
While I have shown. and described a particular construction it will be understood that my invention is capable of modification in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from its scope or spirit as defined in the claims. 7
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a conveyance, front and I'GtllllOOlS mounted to sii'nultaneouslyslide in opposite directions, front and rear steps adapted to be concealed within the body line of said conveyance and to-be slid to open position for use, a lug, on each door, a stud on each step, a pivotally mounted bar, a handle thereon. a front connecting bar pivotally attached to said handle, an intermediate connecting bar pivotally attached to said front connecting bar, a rear connecting arm pivotally attached to the lug on said rear door and to the stud on said rear step and pivotally connected between its ends to said intermediate connecting bar, a front connecting arm pivotallyv connected to the lug on said front door and to the joint pivotally connecting said front connecting bar and said intermediate connecting, bar and also pivotally connectcd to the stud on said front step, substantially setforth and for the purposes specified. In aconveyance. front and rear doors mounted to'simultaneously slide in opposite directions, front and rear steps adapted to be concealed within the body lineof said conveyance and to he slid to open position for use, a lug on each door, a stud on each step. a pivotally mounted bar, a handle thereon, a front connecting bar pivotally attached to said handle, an intermediate connecting bar pivotally attached to said front connecting bar, a rear connecting arm pivotally attached to the lug on said rear door and to the stud on said rear step and pivotally connected between its ends to said intermediate connecting bar, a front connecting 95 arnr pivotally connected to the lug on said front door and to the joint pivotally connecting said front connecting bar and said intermediate connecting bar and also pivotally connected to the stud on said front etc and a curved guide-way through which will handle projects and in which it' is moved when operating said mechanism to open and close said doors and steps, respectively.
3. In a conveyance, front and rear doors mounted to simultaneously slide in opposite directions, front and rear steps adapted to be concealed within the body line of said conveyance and to be slid to open position for use, a rear arm pivotally connecting the rear door and rear step, a front arm pivotally connecting the front door and front step, a pivotally mounted bar, a handle thereon, an arc-shaped guideway for said handle, a front connecting bar pivotally attached to said. handle, an intermediate connecting bar pivotally attached to said front connectin bar and to said front connecting arm and also pivotally attached to said rear connecting arm, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified. i 4. In a conveyance, front and rear doors mounted to simultaneously slide in opposite 5 directions, front and rear steps adapted to be concealed within the body lineof said conveyance and to he slid to open position for use, a rear arm pivotally connecting the rear door and-rear step, a front arm pivotally connecting the front door and frontstep, a ivotaity mounted arg handle thereon an m arc-shaped guideway for said handle, a front connecting bar pivotally attached to said handle, an intermediate connecting bar pivotally attached to said front connecting bar and to said front connecting arm and also pivotally attached to said rear connecting arm and a pivotally mounted handle bar connected to the joint between said front and intermediate locking bars and adapted to be drawn outwardly or pushed inwardly to operate said mechanism for opening an. closing the doors and steps, respectively, substantially as set forth. 7
5. In a conveyance havin operating mechanism of the class describe a pivotally mounted curved arm having a jointed handle adapted to be'pushed inwardly or pulled out wardly to operate said mechanism and when in outward position to drop down outof the way against the body of the car.

In a conveyance having operating mechanism of the class described, a pivotally mounted curved arm having a ]0llli39d handle adapted to be pushed inwardly or pulled outwardly to operate said mechanism and when in outward position to drop down out of the way against the body of the car and a door for closing and concealing said handle when the doors are in closed position.

In a conveyance, front and rear doors mounted to simultaneously slide in opposite directions, frontand rear steps adapted to be concealed within the body line of said conveyance and. to be slid to open position for use, a rear arm pivota'lly connecting the rear door and rear step, a front arm pivotally connecting the front door and front step, a pivotally mounted bar, a handle thereon, a. front connectin bar pivotally attached to said handle, an intermediate connecting bar pivotally attached to said front connecting bar and to said front connecting arm and (1' also pivotally attached to said rear connecting arm and means forguiding said handle when moving it to operate said mechanism.-
