Description

Patented May 2?., i923.,

JOHN HEINKEL, OF'ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
GARAGE DRAIN.
Application filed Januaiy 13, 1922. Serial' No. 528,989.
My invention has reference to garagev drains, and aims to eliminate some of the difiiculties which new attend the use of such devices. On account of the vast amount of mud and iilth that enters these drains, there is constant danger of their becoming choked up and inoperative.` rihe chief purpose of the present invention is to provide a means for preventing the mud and other sediment from entering the drain pipe, and interrupting its movement, so that itcan be readily removed through the drain inlet, and discharged. This is accomplished by supporting a receptacle removably in the upper part of the drain, which will receive the sediment, and which is fitted with overflow openings which will permit theiree escape ot the water, without carrying the sediment with it. In connection therewith means is also provided for preventing the water from entering the drain with a whirling or twisting movement, such as would be likely to carry it out of the receptacle. v v
The construction and arrangement of the device will more fully appear from the tollowing specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which is a sectional view of a drain for garage oors, equipped with the invention.
The reference character l indicates the main intake, adapted to be installed in the floor ota garage, and connected by a pipe- 2 with the soil-pipe. n The upper open end of the intake l is provided with a grating 3, to the under side of which is attached a bell-shaped spreader 4. Near its upper end the intake is provided with the customary vents 5, below which is an annular ledge 6, upon which is removably supported a dishshaped chute 7, in the lower part of which is an opening having an annular rim 8, to receive the rim of a bucket shaped receptacle 9, provided near the top` with a series of openings 10. The receptacle 9 vis also fitted with a handle 1l, by means of which it can be removed from the chute. c
In operation, the water rushes through the grating 3, where it is distributed in all directions by the spreader ll, being again collected by the chute 7, and directed into the receptacle 9. Any sediment'contained in the water'iinds its way to the bottom ofthe receptacle, while the water flows downwardly into said receptacle, and then upwardly and out through the-holes 10, passing thence to the lower partei' the intake, and out through the pipe 2. f
rlhe action of the spreader 4C, directing the volume of water outwardly, and of the chute 7, the Haring sides of which direct it inwardly again, has the eiicct of causing the water to follow a straight course, instead of assuming a whirling movement, as would be likely to be the case were such parts not employed. Such a whirling action would be likely to carry more or less of the sediment out of the receptacle 9 again, and into the nia-in drain..
1"iiheneifer desired, the grating 8 can be displaced, and the receptacle 9 removedk and emptied of its contents. By this means a limited amount, if any, of the sediment will iind its way into the soil pipe, and the same will not become iilled therewith. Such portion of the sediment as may .find its way y out of the receptacle 9 will be likely to settle in the intake 1rom which it can bevremoved. lWhen it is desired to do this, not only the grating with the spreader attached, and the receptacle 9,'but the chute 7 can also be removed, leaving the intake practi- Jx cally clear of obstructions.
`What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:` y y l. A device ot the yclass described, comprising an intake casing, provided with means for connection with a main drain; a grating for said intake, removably supported therein; a bell-shaped spreader supportedy just beneath said grating; a chute supported beneath said spreader, and possessing ya diameter greater than that or' the spreader:
and a receptacle supported in the lower end kor said chute, provided with a series of openings near the top thereof.
prsng an, vnaele casing provided with means for connectionwth `a, main drain; a
grating*removably supported in the upper part o's'aidfeasng; a bell-shaped Spreader secured tothe; lower face" of. szydfgratng;
afdish-s'hapedkchute removably supported Iat epontbelow said spreader; and a C011- tainer removably'held in the lower part of said chute, and provided Wit-h overflow openings at vits upper end.`
