Be it. known that I, HARRY B. HARTMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Scottdale, in the county of VVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safet Razors, of which the following is a spec cation.
This invention relates to safety razors and more particularly to an improved mounting for the blade-carrier whereby the blade may be easily set to any desired angle with reference to the handle.
Primarily the invention contemplates a novel joint construction that is particularly advantageous from a commercial and manufacturing standpoint because of the simplic' ity of the parts which may be'readil and easily made and completely finishe and plated before assembling. Heretofore, it has been necessary in making razors of the type wherein the blade is universally adjustable to subject the finished article to a plating operation because the parts become marred or scarred during assembly. Furthermore, the design of universal joints usually employed are expensive and difficult to make.
Accordingly, the present invention has in view a novel joint construction which may be easily and economically manufactured, and which when assembled for use may be readily set or adjusted to' enable the operator to obtain any desired characterof cutting stroke.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved razor.

Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying the present invention into view showing efi'ect, one of the primary considerations is to produce a razor having a blade carrier that may be set at any desired angle through the medium of a special form of universal joint whose parts may be readily made by convenient and available means of manufacture. In that connection it is also proposed to provide a construction which is stable and not likely to become disarranged in the ordinary course of its manipulation, thereby rendering the operation of the device safe under all conditions of use,
Referring first to the blade carrier 1 it will be observed that the same is provided with a blade seat formed by the blade-edge receiving abutments 2 struck upwardly from theopposite end portions of the guard 3 and a holding wall 4 arranged entirely around the back edge of the blade carrier,
as well as the edge of the notch 5. By continuing the wall 4 about the edge of the notch 5 an intermediate blade positioning shoulder 5" is formed to thereby insure proper seating of the special blade hereinafter referred to. At one corner of the body of the carrier is mounted a keeper-lever 6 ivoted to the body as at 7 and having at its ree end a blade holding stud 8 provided with a keeper head 9.
The novel type of blade holder 1 above described is adapted to accommodate a blade B of the type shown in Figure 3, the same havin a notch 10 for registering with the 'shoul er 5 of the blade holder. When it is desired to lock the blade in place the lever 6 is moved to bring the locking stud 8 intothe notch 5 behind the shoulder 5 in such a manner that the head 9 of the stud will overlie the rear edge of the blade and revent its displacement while in use. '1 us, the blade B may be securely held in the blade holder with its cutting edge properly disposed with reference to the guard 3, .which latter, as may be observed from Fi re 1, is provided with relativel elongate slots 3 separated only by the intervening web 3", thereby permitting the blade to presentits full cutting edge or use.
The novel joint for permitting the adjust ment of the blade holder 1 to the various an? gles desired in shaving, is designated generally as A and serves to flexibly connect ractical joint device permits the ple and shifted about a vertlcal as well blade to as about a horizontal'axis with the greatest ease and facility and yet the parts are fric tionally engaged in such a manner that accidental slipping is avoided.
More particularly this joint device embodies in its organization a tubular sleeve or ferrule which may be formed directly or integrally with the body of the blade carrier 1 as clearly shownin Figure 5. The lower end of this sleeve 10 is provided with an interior counter-sunk portion 11 and an end wall 12 having a slot 13. The said counter-sunk portion 11 is adapted to receive the flange 14 of a bearing washer 15 having a central opening 16 for aligning with the opening 13 in the end of abutment wall 12 of the sleeve 10. When the sleeve and washer 15 are in assembled relation and the openings 13 and 16 are in alignment as above described a coupling bolt 17 ,may be passed through the sleeve and washer in such a manner that the eye 18 of the bolt may pass through the openings 13 and 16 and interlock with the sides of the latter while the shank 19 of the bolt is provided at the end opposite the knuckle portion 18 with an abutment washer 20, the same holding a tensioning spring 21 on the shank of the bolt in such a way that when the bolt is assembled in the sleeve and washer, the spring 21 will be compressed between the abutment and the wall 12 of the sleeve. As the sleeve 10 is a part of the blade carrier 1, and the bolt 17 is interlocked with the bearing washer 15 it will be apparent that, when the sleeve, bearing washer, and bolt are in assembled relation, the said bolt constitutes a vertical pivot axis for the blade 7 carrier 1. The eye portion 18, of the bolt 17 which projects below the bearing washer 17 is adapted to fit between the forked knuckle elements 22 of'the handle H, and when the eye portion 18 of the bolt is thus positioned with reference to the handle, the opening 23 thereof will register with the openings 24 of the knuckles 22 and thereby permit the insertion of a pivot pin 25. Owing to the tension of the spring 21 which is relatively stout, the pin 25 will be frictionally held in position without riveting or otherwise subjecting the same to a separate operation, thereby eliminating any expense in connection with this part of the device. With this arrangement it will be apparent that the pin 25 provides a horizontal axis upon which the blade carrier 1 may hinge or swing to thereby permit it to be -moved forwardly or backwardly on the handle.
In the manufacture of the device the sleeveor ferrule 10 may be formed from the blade carrier 1 by stamping the same out from the body at the time the body is stamped, or the body and ferrule may be made in one piece by a die-casting operation. Thus, the blade carrier and ferrule may be considered as one piece for all subsequent asthe spring 21 may then be placed in the sleeve and the eye 18 thereof which projects beyond the lower edge of the sleeve may then interlock with the bearing washer 15. By compressing the spring 21 sufiiciently to force the knuckle end of the bolt slightly to one side of the lower edge of the washer 15, the forked knuckle end of the handle H may be brought into position so that the openings 24 thereof will register with the opening 23 of the knuckle portion 18 of the bolt. Thus, when the bolt is released from outside pressure, the spring 21 confined between the abutment washer 20 and the wall 12, Will exert sufficient pressure on the bolt to hold the pin 25 in its pro er position.
The handle H having the forked knuckle portion may be of any desired or convenient shape, but as shown in the drawings it is.
preferably of the substantially flatx-crosssection which enables the operator to obtain afirm grip on the razor and prevents rolling or slipping in the users hand.
rom the foregoing it will be apparent that the present construction provides in effect, a blade carrier 1 and a handle H adapted to be connected by the hinged pivot bolt 17 in such a manner that the blade carrier may hinge about the axis of the pivot 25 and rotate about the axis of the pivot bolt 17. In other words the handle H has hingedly connected thereto a pivot bolt 17, the shank of which projects through the opening 13 in between the washer abutment 20 on the end of the bolt and the wall 12 of the tubular member 10, places the entire assembly under sufiicient friction to prevent accidental shifting of the parts when in use.
Without further description it-is thought that the many features and advantages of l the invention will be readily apparent and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to withoutor scope of the appended claims.
I claim': I
1. A safety razor including a blade carrier, a tubular housing on the carrier, a handle having a slotted end portion, a bolt pivoted in said slotted end portion and proectlng into the housing, and a spring surrounding the shank of the bolt and exert- 1ng tension against a portion of the housing to yieldingly hold the same against the end of the handle.
2. A safety razor including a blade carrier, a tubular housing on said carrier, a handle having a forked end portion, a pivot bolt connected with said forked end of the handle and projecting into said tubular departing from the spirit of the invention housing, an abutment on the end of the pivot bolt and a spring confined between said abutment and a portion of the tubular housing to yieldingly hold the housing to the forked handle.
3. A safety razor including ahandle for aforked knuckle portion, a pivot bolt hinged thereto, a bearing washer interlocked with the pivot bolt, a blade carrier having a tu bular portion and adapted to fit over the said pivot bolt and rotatably engage ,with said bearing washer, and a spring confined between an abutment on the bolt and a portion of the tubular member, for tensioning the entire assembly.
4. A safety razor including a blade carrier, a handle and a joint for flexibly connecting the handle and the blade carrier and consisting of a tubular member carried with the blade carrier and having a spring abutment, a pivot bolt adapted to be axially arranged within the tubular member, said bolt having a spring abutment at one end and a pin receiving eye at the other, a bearin member rotatz't bly engaging with the tubular member and having an opening for receiving said eye of the bolt,v pivoting knuckles formed on the handle. and a pivot pin for connecting the eye of said bolt with the pivoting knuckles.
5. A safety razor including a blade carrier formed withv a blade seat and having an inwardly extending notch at the rear edge of the seat, and a blade keeper member consisting of an arm pivoted adjacent one corner of the carrier and having a blade locking stud at its free end provided with a head whereby the shank of the stud may enter the notch while the head overlies the edge of the blade positioned in the blade seat.
6. A safety razor including a blade carrier, a tubular housing on the carrier, a handle member, and means for connecting the handle and the tubular housing consisting of a bolt constituting a vertical pivot-ing axis for the blade carrier, a spring confined between a portion of the bolt and the tubular housing, and a pin for connecting the bolt with the handle and constituting a horizontal pivoting axis for the carrier.
7. A safety razor including a blade carrier, a housing on the carrier, a handle memher, and means for connecting the handle and the housing consisting of a bolt constituting a vertical pivoting axis for the blade carrier, a spring confined between a portion of the bolt and the housing, and a jointed connection between the bolt and the handle which includes a. horizontal pivoting axis for the carrier.
