STATES THOMAS C. WENTWORTH, Ol CORNISH, MAINE.
COVER FASTENER.
Application led July 3,
T all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I,v THOMAS C. VVnN'r- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cornish, county of York, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
`This invention relates to shipping cases .and particularly to a cover fastener therefor.
For the purposes of this application I shall show and describe my invention in its adaptation to an egg case of standard commercial type, although it will be understood that such showing is purely illustrative and in n0 way limiting.
In a shipping case of this type the cover is a loose lid and it is accordingly desirable that the cover be securely fastened over the top of the boX by a fastening which will be capable of being set up tightly enough to bind the cover on the box without however displacing the cover laterally relative to the boX top during the action of locking the cover fastener. It is also desirable that the cover fastener itself shall serve as a hinge for the cover so that the cover may be swung back when the boX is opened without complete disconnection from the box. An-
other requisite is that the cover fastener shall be capable of being easily locked and unlocked, and when locked shall be positively fastened so as not to accidentally become disengaged in shipment.
To the end therefore of providing a cover fastener embodying the foregoing features I have devised my present invention.
In it the cover fastener consists of one or more reinforcement strips, which are preferably passed completely around and rigidly fastened to the bottom and sides of the boX and terminate opposite the seat for the boX cover and attheir terminals carry a hinge member and a locking member which are adapted to be detachably connected to each other `to tighten the strip upon the box cover, and thereby lock the cover against movement upon the box.
The separable connection between the terminals of the clamping strip consists of a pair of spaced fastener members which are slidably mounted upon the box cover for limited travel transversely thereof. One of said adjustable fastener members is permanently engaged with the hinge. member of 1922. serial No. 572,628.
the clamping strip thereby hinging the cover to the box, and the other fastening member is adapted to be releasably engaged by the loc-king element at the opposite terminal of the clamping strip. `When the fastener members are drawn towards each other by means 0f a suitable adjusting device, the clamping strip is drawn taut over the box cover and the cover is thereby permanently locked upon the box.
The construction and operation of my combination reinforcement and fastener is described and illustrated in the accompanying specification and drawings, and the characteristic features of novelty are particularly pointed out in the appended claims. Throughout the specification and drawings like reference characters are correspondingly employed, and in the drawings:
Fig. l is an end view 0f a shipping case equipped in accordance with my invention and indicating in dotted lines the cover raised.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is anenlarged detail section particularly showing one of the cover fasteners.
I have indicated generally at 1 an egg case of standard type and at 2 the removable cover therefor.
My cover fastener consists of one or more clamping strips 3, here shown as two strips applied adjacent either end of the case, and permanently attached, as indicated at 4, to the sides and preferably also to the bottom of the boy and each lterminating adjacent the seat for the box cover in loop 5, 5',
Mounted upon the upper face of the cover adjacent each end thereof for limited sliding travel transversely thereon and connected to the terminals 5 of the strip is a pair of spaced fastener blocks 6 and 7, which are adapted to be drawn together to tighten the strip 3 about the box and thereby clamp the cover over the boX top. To this end, each block 6 carries a bolt 8 which is adapted to be screwed into the block 7 to draw th blocks together.
In order` to fix the blocks upon the cover and guide and limit their travel relative to each other, the top face of the cover is, as here shown, provided with one or more longitudinally disposed anchoring strips 9, and each block is enclosed within a covering strip l0 which combines the function of a protective cover and an attaching means for the blocks, and is passed beneath the, anchoring strips 9 to slidably attach the blocks to the box cover.
The block 6 at its outer end is vertically notched as indicated at 11 and theI protective strip 10 for said block hasl a hole let therethrough in registry with said notch so as to provide a catch within which a hook 12 looped through the adjacent closed end 5 of the binding strip 3 may be engaged. The catch thus provided is preferably reinforced by a reinforcing bar 13 which is set transversely across the outer end of the block 6 between the block and its covering strip.
The covering strip 10 at the outer end of thebloelr G has a hole let therethrough within which the head 15 of the bolt is lodged between the inner end of the block itself and its covering strip.
Between the inner end of the opposite block 7 and its covering strip is confined a threaded lbearing piece 16 which is tapped and threaded to receive the threaded end of the bolt 8 which is provided between its ends, with a wing nut 17 by means of which the bolt may be turned to draw the blocks toward each other. The top face of the cover 2 beneath the wing nuts is recessed as indicated at 18 to permit the bolts to be conveniently grasped by the fingers in setting up the bolts. j
The covering strip at the outer end of the block is spaced therefrom sufficiently to provide a loop 19 under which is engaged a. loop 2O which is also connected to the looped end 5 of the binding strip 3 so as to afford a permanent hinged connection for the cover.
In assembling the elements of my invention the binding strips 3 are fastened to the sides and bottom wall of the box and the anchoring strips for the blocks 6 and 7 are attached to the cover. The blocks 7 are hinged by means of the loops 2O to the loop ends 5 of thebinding strips and the locking hooks 12 are engaged in the locking recesses 11 of the blocks 6. The cover 2 may then-be fastened by drawing the blocks to wards each other by means of the bolts 8 to tighten the strips 3 upon the cover. In such action, the blocks slide transversely of the cover in their guides 9 without however` displacing the cover relative to the top of the box.
7When the strips 3 are released by disconnecting the hooks 12 from the blocks 6 and the box cover' is opened, the loops 2O turn upon the'loop ends 5 of the strips as pintles, thereby limiting the opening movement of the cover and preventing complete disconneetion of the cover from the box.
In its broadest conception, of course, the
, clampingstrip Bis to'be considered as a pair liti' opposite sides of the box adjacent the seat for the bonv cover, and the fastener blocks 6 and T are to be regarded as an adjustable flexible connection between said anchoring elements-` which, due to its nature of attachment to the bei; cover not only hinges the cover to the box, but also permits the clamp to be drawn taut and thereby lock the cover in position overthe mouth of the box. In other words the fastener blocks combine the functions of a hinge and an adjustable clamp for` the box cover.
Various modifications in the form and construction of my invention mayv obviously be resorted to if within the limits of the appended claims.
IVhat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
