Be it known that 1, IsAAo G. Srnvnns, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illustrative Display Sheets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference numerals marked thereon.

My present invention relates to display cards or heets of a nature used to induce the sale of articles represented thereon, and it has for its object to provide a simple and convenient sheet of this kind for use in demonstrating index systems uch as card index files. The improvements are directed toward providing means whereby a prospective purchaser may be graphically shown the manner in which different combinations of index tabs may be usedand this, if desired in connection with a physical specimen of an element of the index represented. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is'a plan view of an index sheet made in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention, a physical specimen of one of the index cards being also shown in the manner. in which it is used therewith Figure 2 is a collective view of a series of different index tabs that maybe used in connection with the sheet;

Figure 3 is a collective view of various sheets of tabs of different sizes that are used in connection with the pictorial representation of Figure 1; and

Figure 4: is a sectional view through a fragment of the sheet.

Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.

In the present instance I have illustrated my invention as applied to a sheet for explaining capabilities of a card index file. 1 indicates the sheet which may be made of paper and 2 is a pictorial illustration printed or drawn thereon of a card index drawer in perspective View containing a series of indexed cards or elements 3. These cards in reality are of the nature shown in its physical. form at 4- as being laid on the sheet 1 and comprising an integral index tab out into its outline, It is not practicable for a salesman to carry with him to show to customers a full set of these cards because there are many styles differing in the position of the index tab 5 on the top edge of the card, and furthermore it usually requires a number of cards of each type to make the full index that it is desired to show to the customer. I therefore provic e along with the pictorial sheet, sheets of tab patterns of the various sizes as shown at 6, 7, S, and 10 in Figure 5, in each of which the tabs are cut in outline except for their straight longitudinal edges which are joined along lines 11 that may be cut with scissors or a knife to separate them into individual tab pasters as shown at 6, 7, 8 9 and 10 in Figure 2. The sheets 610 are preferably of thin paper and may be gummed on their under sides.

When it is desired to represent on the sheet 1 an index system consisting of a given combination of the tabs 6-10 formed on the card elements of that system these tab pasters are cut from the appropriate sheets and pasted upon the sheet 1, each in its respective position with respect to the upper edge of the pictorial representation of a card or element 8. In this way the appearance of the desired index file is created for the customer and thousands of combinations may be worked out and selected from to meet his particular needs as in the index itself.

To further increase the reality of the representation made the physical specimen of one of the cards, such as that shown at Fig ure l, is used in connection with the sheet, the index shown on the latter being full size in the picture, ,or the card 4 being reduced to fit the picture. The sheet is provided with one or more slits or slots 12 out along the line coincident with the position of a card or element in the pictorial combination, and the card 4 bearing an actual tab 5 correspending to one of the tab pasters may be inserted and withdrawn through the slot 12 to take a position conforming with those of the pictured elements and illustrate the manner in which the cards are manipulated and used in reality.

If tabs of leather metal or other materials used for this purpose are present in the goods that are being explained, these characteristics may be imitated in the materials of the sheets 6-10 or in the printing thereot.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with an illustrative display sheet bearing a pictorial IQPLGSQII- tation of an index file in perspective VlEW including a container and a series 01''; indexed elements therein having index tabs, the sheet being slotted along a line indicative of the position or one each element, of a J hysical specimen of such element adapted to be inserted in the slot and having an index tab adapted to project therefrom in simulation of the tabs represented in connection with the pictorial units.

2. The combination with an illustrative display sheet bearing a pictorial representation of an index file in perspective View including a container and a series of indexed elements therein, of a plurality 0t index tabs of different styles formed to accord with the represented size of theindexcd eleauents and adapted to be selectively adhesivelyapiflied thereto as illustrative of (lifi'erent indexing methods.
