To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HORATIO SEYMOUR SEELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sight Bases for Rifles, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in sight bases or mounts for rifles.

An important object of the invention is to provide a sight base particularly adapted for use with certain types of bolt action rifles and which may be attached thereto without altering the present construction of the rifle.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which. is mounted upon and shifts with the bolt and which when the bolt is in the firing position is solidly engaged with. rigid portions of the bolt receiver and the tang of the rifle so that the same is very solidly held against movement.

A still further object of the invention is i' j to provide a. device of this character which is simple in its construction, durable in service, and which may be readily applied to the rifle.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a sight mount for rifles of the Krag type which will permit the mounting of a sight at the rear end of the bolt ac tion, at which point the same is positioned achjacent the eye of the person handling the r1 e.

These and other objects I attain by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout.

guide removed and having attached thereto the tired shell. The rear end of the plun-w ger extends through the rear end of the bolt and is directed through a plunger guide 15 which forms a mounting for a safety 16 for preventing shifting of the plunger 13 when desired. This guide is provided with an extension 17 receiving at its forward end the rear end of the extractor 1 1, as indicated at 18, a rivet 19 extending through the extension 17 and extractor 14: to maintain the extractor in position. The guide 15 is open at its lower end, as indicated at 20, to perniit the passage of a downwardly extended shoulder 21 of the plunger having formed therein full cock notch 22 by means of which the plunger is held in the cooked position by the sear of the rifle. The extension 17 of the guide has the sides thereof vertically extending and parallel, and operating between the adjacent faces of the upper ends of the receiver 10, this engage: ment preventing at all times rotation of the guide 15 and plunger 13. The rear end of the receiver is usually provided with an extension 10 reinforcing the guide 15 through the extension 17 thereof during its rearward movement. The guide 15 is provided at its forward end with a sleeve-like extension 15 rotatably engaged by the rear end of bolt 11, the rear extremity of which abuts the forward. end of the guide.

The numeral 23 designates a sight base, the under surface of which is shaped to conform to the upper surface of the extension 17, as indicated at 24. The sight base is provided with an opening 25 through which the extractor rivet 19 may be extended for engagement with the base 23 and the sight 26 carried thereby. The rear end of the sight base is provided with downwardly extending spaced arms 27 having their lower faces shaped, as indicated at 28, for engagement with tangs 29 by means of which the receiver is secured to the stock 30 of the rifle. The adjacent faces of the arms 27 are provided with grooves 31 receiving the side faces of the guide 15 and having a greatly solidifying the engagement of: the

base.

As is well known to those familiar with this type of rifle, when the bolt 11 and lun er 13 are withdrawn the uide '15;

is likewise withdrawn to extract the fired shell through medium of the extractor 14 and the sight base will accordingly move rearwardly with the guide 15. "When the bolt is moved forwardly to the firing position, the plunger 13 is retained by the sear of the rifle in the firing position and the guide 15 is moved forwardly independently of the plunger, the sight base moving with the guide. This forward movement of the guide 15 is accomplished by means of opposed shoulders 33 and 34.- formed upon the bolt and the lower face of the extension 17 of the guide, respectively. The last portion of the forward movement of the bolt is accomplished in all of th eso rifles by means of a rotative movement during which the bolt handle 12 has a camming action with the receiver 10 (not herein illustrated) which looks the bolt against movement when the rifle is fired. This camming action has the effect of drawing the sight base firmly against the rear end of the receiver 10 and against the tangs 29, very solidly seating the same and at the same time interlocking the sight base with the rearward projection 10 of the receiver. Attention is directed to the fact that the engagement of the bolt with the guide 15 is such that relative rotation of the bolt and guide are permitted, but relative longitudinal movement thereof is prevented.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a sight base constructed in accordance with my inventionmay be readily applied to a rifle of this type and that when so applied will in no manner interfere with the operation of the bolt and plunger or with the op-. eration of the safety catch 16 by means of which the plunger is locked when in the firing position. It will furthermore be obvious that no new parts for the rifle are necessitated and that no changes whatever need bemade in the construction of the riiie beyond the provision of the slightly lengthened extractor rivet. Since the details of construction of the sight base herein disclosed must necessarily be slightly altered in order to accommodate the same to the particular construction of different types of "bolt action rifles, I do not Wish to be limited to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim 1-- 1. A. sight mount for rifles embodying a shiftable bolt, a non-rotatable plunger guide on the bolt, the guide having an extension forming an attachment for an extractor, said mount comprising a base adapted for attachment to said extension and embodying portions rigidly embracing said guide.

2. A. sight mount for rifles embodying a shiftable bolt, a non-rotatable plunger guide on the bolt, an extractor, an extension on the guide receiving the extractor, and securing means extending through the extension and extractor for securing the same together said mount comprising a base adaptedv to engage and conforming to the shaping of the upper surface of said extension and with which said securing means is engaged, said base being provided at its rearward end with portions rigidly embracing said guide.

The combination with a rifle embodying a slotted receiver, a bolt shiftable within the receiver, a plunger carried by the bolt and shiftable within the bolt, a non-rotatable guide for the plunger embodying an extension operating in the receiver slot, of a sight base abutting and secured to said extension and embodying downwardly extending portions rigidly embracing said guide.

4. The combination with a rifle embodying a slotted receiver, a bolt shiftable within the receiver, a plunger carried by the bolt and shiftablc within the bolt, a non-rotatable guide for the plunger embodying an extension operating in the receiver slot, of a sight base abutting and secured to said extension embodying downwardly extending portions rigidly embracing said guide. said sight base being provided upon the under face thereof with a shoulder having interlocking engage ment with the rear end of said receiver.

5. The combination with a rifle embodying a slotted receiver, a bolt shiftable within the receiver, a plunger carried by the boltand shiftable within the bolt, a non-rotatable guide for the plunger embodying an exteusion operating in the receiver slot, of a sight base abutting and secured to said extension embodying downwardly extending portions rigidly en'ibracing said guide, said sight base being provided upon the under face, thereof with a shoulder having interlocking engagement with the rear end of said receiver, the lower ends of said downwardly extending portions abutting and conforming to the shape of the receiver tangs when the bolt is in the firing position.
