Description

F. YARDLEY VALVE OPERATINGIMECHANISM Filed Oct. 8, 1921 ATTORNEY Patented May 8, 1923.
UNI-TED STATES v 1,454,367 PATENT oFFicE.
, FARNHAM YARDLEY, OF NEW YORK. N, Y.,-ASSIGNOR TO JENKINS BROS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
VALVE-OPERATING MECHANISM.
Application filed October To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'FARNHAM YARDLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, county of New York, and- State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve- Operating Mechanism; and I dohereby decla're the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art' to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a mechanism for operating reciprocating valves of the quick action type and has for its object to pro- 15. vide a simple and efiicient attachment to be applied to valves of the type indicated, adapted to operate the valve by a single direct movement and to hold the valve securely in itsadjusted position. To this end the invention comprises a bracket arm having a perforated foot portlon adapted to surround the neck of the valve casing and a'curved' and bifurcated or forked outer portion terminating in perforated ears which overlie the foot portion, said ears receiving a pivot or screw upon which is mounted a hand lever having a lateral cam face adapted to engage and operate the stem of the valve, and a flat end section, preferably provided with a depression therein to engage the end of the valve stem and hold the valve securelyin its adjusted position, said hand lever also being provided with a lug, or lugs, adjacent its pivotal connection with the bracket,
adapted to engage the curved portion of the bracket arm to limit the movement of the,
' hand lever. 4
The accompanying drawing 15 a vertical elevation, partly in section, of the device as applied to a spring closed valve of the quick action type. p j
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the valve casing, having a bottomcap or closure 2, carrying a helical spring 3 which serves normal y to force -valve 4 to its seat, the
valve being normally unseated by means of a reciprocating stem 7 slidably mounted in the necko of the valve casing. Said neck 5 is provided with external screw threads to receive a cap of a gland or stufiing box 6,
and also to serve in conjunction with nut 10 as means for locking the operating mechanism to the valve casing.
The support for'the operating mechanism comprisesa bracket arm 8 provided at its 8, 1921. Serial N0. 506,518.
lower end with a laterally disposed perfo'rated foot 9, which fits over the neck 5 of the valve casing and rests upon the annular shoulder formed about the base of the neck.
The upper end of the bracket arm is curved laterally and is bifurcated or forked. the two arms 11'of the forked portion being provided with perforated ears 12 which overlie the foot portion 9, and are adapted to receive a pivot bolt 17 Journaled on the pivot bolt 17 is a hand 'lever 13 having an eccentric cam surface H on one face disposed laterally ot' the pivot connection, and a relatively fiat end face 15 provided with atransverse notch or recess 16, the cam surface 14 serving to engage the outer end of the valve stem 7 and force the stem inwardly to unseat the valve, when the lever 13 is swung outwardly, upon its pivot, with respect to the valve, and the notch 16 serving to lock the lever and the valve in their adjusted positions, when the lever is swung into substantial axial alignment with the valve stem.
'In order to'holdthe lever 13 in its'inoperative position and substantially-normal to the longitudinal axis of the valve stem, said lever is provided with a lug 18 adjacent the )ivotal connection with the bracket, whic lug is adapted to engage the inner edge of the curved portion 11 of the bracket arm andvarrest the movement of the lever 13, when the latter reaches the position indicated in the figure of the drawing. If desired a lug 18 may be applied on each face of the lever.
The bracket arm is secured to the valve casing by passing the foot member 9 over the neck 5 and locking said foot member to the casing by means of the set nut 10 engaging the screw threads on the neck 5.
This means of attachment admits of the bracket 8 being set in any desired angular relation with respect to the valve stem, so that the hand lever may project or extend outwardly from the valvein any desired direction and the bracket and hand lever locked in the selected adjusted position.
While the invention has been illustrated as applied to a normally spring closed valve, it will be obvious that it may also be applied to a valve which is normally open but which is adapted to be closed by the engagement of the cam surface on the hand lever 13engaging the upper end of the valve stem.
What I claim is:
1. In a valve, a valve easing havinga neck portion, a valve operating mechanism comprising a bracket arm having afperforated foot to engage the neck of the valve casing and a curved and forked outer end having perforated ears overlying the foot a nut on the neck of the valve casing to engage and lock the foot of the bracket to the valve cas ing, and a hand lever pivoted in said ears having a lateral cam surface adapted toengage and depress the valve stem, and a flat end surface to hold the valve stem in adjusted position.
2. In a valve, a valve casing having a neck portion, a valve operating mechanism com prising a bracket arm having a perforated foot to engage the neck of the valve casing and a curved and forked outer end having perforated ears overlying the foot, a nut on I the neck of the valve casing to engage and lock the foot of the bracket to the valve cas Mae-ear depress the valve stem and a flat end surface havinga depression therein cooperating with the valve stem to lock the latter in adjusted position.
3. A valve operating mechanism comprising a bracket arm having a perforated foot to engage the neck of the valve casing and a curved and. forked outer end having perforated ears overlying the foot, a hand lever pivoted in said ears having a lateral cam surface adapted to engage and depress the valve stem and a flat end surface to hold the valve stem in adjusted position, said hand lever having a lug adjacent the pivotal connection with the bracket arm to engage the curved end of the latter to limit the movement of said lever.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
