IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-EXTINGUISHERS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WEAR L. DRAKE, of Evanston, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements relating to Fire-Extinguishers, of which improvements the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which a fire-extinguisher is represented, in combination with water-supply pipes, arranged in a building, so that the contents of the extinguisher maybe conveyed to any room through said pipes and there discharged.

My invention relatesto that class of fire-extinguishers from which water is discharged by means of a pressure created by gas generated in the extinguisher; and the object of my invention is to render the extinguisher operative in connection with an ordinary system of watersupply pipes. My invention consists in the means hereinafter particularly described and set forth, and employed for the purpose of accomplishing the object above mentioned.
In the drawing, A represents a building having several rooms. B B are watersupply pipes, communicating with the several rooms. 0, O, and C are fire-extinguishers of the class referred to. B is an intermediate pipe, communicating with the pipes B B, and with the extinguishers O and O. D is a check-valve in the pipe B, and D and D are cheek-valves in the pipe B. E is an ordinary hose and discharge-pipe, and F is a pipe to which the hose is attached. The pipes F communicate with the pipes B, and are provided with stop-cocks, so that the communication with the hose may be regulated, and so that the discharge of water from the nozzle of the pipes F may also be controlled. G G are pull-cords arranged in each room, and communicating with the extinguisher, so that the latter may be discharged by means of the cord.
The contents of the extinguisher will be discharged into any room by pulling a cord, G, and by opening the communication between the hose and pipe I arranged in the room into which the contents are to be discharged. The contents may, in like manner, be discharged into all the rooms at the same time; or they may be carried to any part of the building to which the pipes B B extend, and there discharged.
A check-valve should be arranged between the pipes B B and those from which the water is received, as shown at D, and the operation of the valveD is such that it will be closed by a pressure exerted upon i when the extinguisher is discharged.
By this means the wa er in the pipes B B, before the extinguisher iswlischarged, is utilized, and the contents of the extinguisher are confined to the pipes B B.
When the extinguisher is not in operation, the water flows through the valve 1) into the pipes B B, and is distributed in the usual manner.
D is a check-valve to prevent the entrance into the extinguisher of water from the supplypipes, and the pressure of water in the latter closes the valve D, which is opened by means of the pressure created in the extinguisher. I Each extinguisher employed for this purpose, and operating in connection with the same system of pipes, should also operate in connection with a valve, D, or its equivalent. so that the contents of one extinguisher will not mingle with the contents of another.
D is a valve, operating in all respects like the valve D. B is a bar, connecting the extinguishers G and O, for the purpose of rendering them more firm; but its employment is not essential.
It will be perceived that only one extinguisher need be employed in the manner described, and that any suitable means may be employed for the purpose of setting the extinguishers in operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I a A fire-extinguisher which discharges its contents by means of gas generated in the extinguisher, in combination with water-supply pipes provided with valves, arranged and opcrating substantially as specified.
