HAT PROTECTOR.
Application filed November 3, 1921. Serial No. 512,440.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. CHECK, citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Protectors-cf which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to hat protectors such as are used with straw hats and the principal object is to provide a hat protector which can be quickly secured to the brim of a straw hat, to shield same during a rain storm, and which thereafter can be conveniently folded and stowed anywhere on the person.
These and other objects will become ap parent in the description to follow in which like-named characters in the specification will refer to the like-named parts in the drawing. v
The drawing will be described briefly as follows:
Figure 1, is aperspective view showing part of the hat protector torn away to disclose the hat. a
Figure 2-is a bottom plan view reduced and shows the attaching strips.
Figure 3 is a cross section of the same;
' Figure a: is an enlarged sectional vlew-of the spring button securing means.- V
Figure 5 is a View of a modified form of securing 'Referring to the drawing more in detail, the numeral 10 represents the usual type of straw hat worn generally during the summerseason, and having the hat protector thereon. The hat protector is preferably made i a close woven variety having the outer, exposed surface thereof coated with a water-proofin compound I The numeral 11 indicates the fabric covc three pieces, the fabric of which'consists' ering the upper surface of the crown of the hat and is joined to the fabric band 12 by means of the lap joint 13, is joined to brim cover 14 by means of lap joint 15, the outside element of the joint 15 being part ofthe' fabric 12 and the inner element 1& being. turned up from the brim cover as shown. It
is apparent from the drawing that no seam rin is presented allowing rain to gain the lower surface 1 1, which covers the entire surface of the upper surface of the brim of the hat: 7
Said fabric 14c has strips 1'? sewn theretoextending over the edge 16 and adapted to have spring button elements 18 secured thereto.- The hat 10 has holes punched thru the brim adapted to receive the sleeves 19, having a tapered hole 20 therein, the largest 1 turned flange formed integral with said disc tightly fitting the crown, a band encircling said crown and flange, a cover over the top of the hat, adownturned flange formed at the'edge of said coveroverlying said band, strips secured to said disc, said strips extending under the brim'of the hat, snap fastener elements carried by said strips, and engaging means for said fastener elements permanently fixed in the brim of the hat.
