UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUFUS E. BEAN, OF FRANKLIN, NEV HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAME APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters' Patent No. 145,385, dated December l), 1873 application filed June 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BUFUs ELMORE BEAN, of Franklin, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new Game and the Instrument for Producing the same, designated the Paradox Game, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to produce a pleasing and interesting game of skill, which can be played upon a portable instrument for home amusement; and the invention consists in a novel structure or instrument for this purpose.
Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a plan or top view.
A represents a bed, provided at either end with standards a a. B B are rods, which are hinged at one extremity to the lower part of the standard a, while their other extremities are formed into suitable handles for the player to grasp. The standard a carries a bar, b, which serves as a rest for the rods or arms B B, on which they are opened and closed, at pleasure. As the arms B B are hinged near the bottom of the standard a, and rest on the cross-bar b, they have a slightly-inclined position. The bed A has cavities d d made in its upper surface in the direction of its length, which cavities may be numbered or designated as desired. ,c is a ball of any convenient size,
and of which any desired number may be used for each player.
rlhe manner in which the instrument is used and what constitutes the game are as follows: The arms or rods B B being closed, or nearly so, the ball is placed in position at the hinged extremity of the rods, which is the vertex of the angle formed by their divergence. The player grasps the handles of the rods, and by opening them sufciently the ball c will commence to roll apparently up the inclined lplane formed by the two rods B, similarly tothe double cone on the inclined planes used for illustrating principles of gravity in natural philosophy. The skill of the player and gist l/J
