"c. c. CAREK PORTABLE AIR STORAGE TANK \Filed March 20, 1922 Cka/rias Cf Camel") Patented Apr. 24, 1923.
CHARLES oceanic, oFmo'uHY, NnBaAsKA.
PORTABLE AIR-s'ro mcr: TANK.
Application filed March 20, 1922. Serial No. 545,135.
T all w from it may concern Be it known that CHARLES C. CAREK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Touhy, in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska, has invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Portable Air-Storage Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in portable airstorage tanks, and more particularly to that type oftank which does not require the usual air compressor or pump for filling.
An objectof this invention is to provide a suitable portable air storage tank, which is adapted to be carried on an automobile and which will be provided with a suitable holding means, for an explosive charge, to
be used for filling the tank to the desired pressure.
Another object of the invention is to provide a suitable portable air storage tank, which will be provided with a suitable charge-holding barrel and means for firing the charge when desired.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds. ings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an automobile with my improved, tank in position thereon;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation w th a portion of the running board with my 1mproved tank thereon; and 1 Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the chargeholding barrelfwith charge therein.
The air storage tank 1 is preferably formed of metal and is provided at one of its ends with a pressure gauge 2 and valve 3.
Adjacent the opposite end of the tank 1 is a discharge valve 4 which connects with the usual air supply tube 5. On the end of the tube 5 is a union. or connecting nipple 6 which may be attached to the tube or tire to be inflated.
Positioned at the top of the tank 1, and preferably welded therein, is a charge-holding barrel 7, the same being provided with a flange 8 on the outer side of the tank 1. The periphery of the flange 8 is preferably screw-threaded as at 9 to receive the locking cap 10. The locking cap 10 is provided with a central bore or opening 11 in which is slidably mounted a firing pin 12. This In the accompanying drawcap 10 and is held in outward position bymeans of the coil spring 13. A lug or washer 14 is carried by said pin for holding the same within said locking cap.
A suitable cartridge or charge 15, is adapted to be placed in the barrel 7 and to be ignited or fired by the firing pin 12.
Assuming that the tank 1 had no air therein, a cartridge or charge would be inserted in the barrel 7 and the locking ca 10 screweddown tight, after which the ring pin would be struck, to fire offv the said cartridge. The force of the explosion of the charge or cartridge would fill the tank to a considerable pressure, preferably to "about 300 lbs., determined by the amount of explosive in said charge. The pressure gauge would readily show the pressure of the air within the tank 1, so that when the pressure I got down to such a low degree of usefulness, it would be 'a simple matter to insert a new charge, and fire the same, thereby building up the pressure the desired amount.
It will be understood that this air supply tank receives all of its pressure from the charges or cartridges,.and is not dependent at all upon the customary air compressors or pumps.
Many minor changesin detail of construction maybe resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
11 A' portable air' supply tank compristachably secured to said barrel, a firing pin slidably carried by said locking cap, and an outlet from said tank adapted to be connected to a tire ortube. i
2; A portable air supply tank comprising a charge holdingbarrel extending through one wall thereof, a flange formed on the outer end of said barrel, a locking cap detachably connected tosaid barrel, and a slidable firing pin resiliently mounted in said cap. y
3. In a portable air supply tank, the com-- bination of a charge holding barrel extending through one wall thereof, a flange formed integrally with said barrel, a detachable locking cap secured to said flange, said cap being provided with a central bore or opening, a resiliently mounted firing pin i v Q 7 1,452,789
carried by said cap, a discharge tube concap being provided With a central bore or nected ith said tank, and means for turnopening, a resiliently mounted firing pin 10 ing on or off the air from said tank. carried by said cap, means for securing said l. In a portable air supply tank, the compin in said cap, a discharge tube connected 5 bination of a charge holding barrel ex'tendwith said tank, and means for turning on or ing through one wall thereof, a flange oil the airfrom said tank. formed integrally With said barrel, a detach- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 15 able locking cap secured to said flange, said CHARLES C. CAREK.
