UNITED STATES THOMAS I. JENSEN, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
COUNTER.
Application filed March 21, 1922.
To ch- "lo/ 1 0777, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. Jensen, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of.
Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to counters.
It comprises a plurality of front bins arranged in the counter, the contents of which are visible through plate glass windows, a plurality of rear bins disposed conveniently for access to the contents thereof, and means for ventilating the front bins.
A primary object of the invention is the attractive display of the contents of the front bins, each bin having a pair of windows through which the goods are visible.
An important object of the invention is the ventilaton of the front bins. Screens are provided at the ends of the counter and air is let through the screens and through openings in the bottom of the bin, upward through the contents of the bin, through the screen in a partitionary wall, and outward. Gratings are provided in the bin for permitting the air to move upwardly, thus facilitating the thorough ventilation.
A very important object is the convenience of access to the bins. A pivoted closure is provided which need merely be swung rearwardly, and the material is exposed to be scooped up. The receptacles in the rear of the counter are conveniently open, covers that swing on pivots being provided and handles on the covers for convenient graspit very important feature of the invention is the arrangement of the front bins and the rearward receptacles. There is a minimum waste of room. The arrangement is compact and pleasing to the eye.
Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel. construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention con- Serial No. 545,453.
structed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the novel counter.
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 22 thereof,
Figure 3 is a rear View, and
Figure at is a side view of the counter.
Sides 10 and 11 are rigid with bottom 12 and support top 13 having reinforcements 14, 1 1 thereon. A central partition 15 is provided forming the back wall of a series of bins and operating to partition the bins off from receptacles 16 in the rear. Extending forwardly from partition 15 is a bin bottom 17 having a plurality of apertures 18 therein and extending between side walls 19. From the front edge of the bin bottom 17, a front wall 20 is upwardly and outwardly directed. having a plate glass 21 therein through which the contents of the bin are visible. Pivoted to the side walls 19 of the bin is a closure 22 adapted in closed position to contact with front wall 20 and reinforce ment 1.4:. The closure has a plate glass 23 therein and is supported by arms 25 pivoted at 25 so that the closure maybe swung on its pivot to extreme rearward position, as shown in dotted lines, in which position the operator may insert a scoop into the resulting opening and remove material as he desires. These bins are for the reception ordinarily of bulk goods.
In the upper part of partition 15 a screen 26 is provided. which leads to a longitudinal chamber 27 of which member 28 is a bottom wall and member 29 a side wall. A screen 30 admits air to chamber 27. Screen. 31 in the side communicates with a chamber beneath the bins formed by a partition 15, bottom 12, and vertical member 32, so that air is free to pass through screen 31, apertures 18. the bins and screens 26 and 30. Gratings 33 and 34 are provided in the bins which facilitate the movement of the air as the air is free to pass along the gratings and among the interstices, Material falling through apertures 18 may be removed by the withdrawal of drawer Receptacles 16, provided, also, for bulk food, rest on supports 36 extending longi tudinally of the counter and are provided with covers 37 movable on pivots 38, the outward limit of motion being shown in dotted lines. As is apparent, the covers may be Eli conveniently opened by handles 39 and access is then had to the contents. Slides 37 having teeth 38 at their ends move in sheets 89- and contact With deformation 40' limit the outward movement of cover 87.
I claim a The combination of a pair of spaced counter-sides, a longitudinal partition extending from one of said sides to the other, a plurality of tiers of receptacles on one side oit'said partition, said tierstaking up an entire side of said counter, a plurality of bins on the other side of said partition, said bins taking up said other side of the counter, a screen in one of said sides, a counter top resting on said sidesand said partition, a
vertical member depending from said counter top and spaced from said partition, said screen being located between said vertical member and said partition, and a longitudinal member extending from said vertical member to said partition and from one of said sides to the other, said partition, said top, said vertical member and said longitudinal member forming a longitudinal chamber for con ducting air from said screen, said partition having an opening therein leadinginto said chamber, a screen covering said opening, the bottom of said bin having a plurality of apertures therein, and a second screen in one of said sides for leading air from said side to the apertures in the bottom of the said bin. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Racine, i11 the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin.
THOMAS P. JENSEN.
