To all whom it' may concern:

Be it known that I, ULYssns S. G. BRoBs'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headlight Dimmers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a headlight dimmer for automobiles and the like, but may be used anywhere such a device is required or desired or necessary. Heretofore in dimming or de'fiecting headlights of vehicles it has been customary touse various forms of special lenses for the headlights, some of which diffuse the light and some of which deiiect the light, .but all of which absorb part of the light from the lamp thereby rendering it necessary to have a higher powered bulb than should be required to furnish the required amount of light toproperly illumine the roadway.

It is one of' the objects of my invention to provide means for deiiecting the light to any desired point without the use of special vlenses or in any way altering the construction of the headlight.

Another object is to provide a cheap, simple and eiiicient device to be attached-to the headlight which may be adjustedv to defleet the light to any desired point without materially altering the headlight.

A further object is to provide means for focusing the headlights at any given point or for diffusing the light as desired. v

A still further object is to provide cheap, simple and eicient means for accomplishing the above purpose.

A still further object is to provide means of the above character which will utilize all of the light from the bulbs.

. Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter, and while I have shown and will describe my preferred form of this invention, it will be understood that I do not' limit myself to such preferred form but that various changes and adaptations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Referring to the drawings, the preferred form of my device comprises a deflector 16 mounted within a holder 17 upon the lower wall of the inner periphery of the headlight 1.8. The headlight is of any usual construction, the holder 17 being made to conform to the interior configuration thereof. The upper end of holder 17 extends at an angle as best shown in Figure l, which angle is such as to extend a little above the center of the globe 19 at its front end, and at its rear end is even with the lower portion of the globe, it being globe 19 is covered with a suitable material to prevent the visibility of the laments from the front. Mounted in holder 17 is the deflector 16 which may be made of glass coated on its lower side with mercury and paint similar to a mirror, or may be made of any other desired material, highly polished steel, for instance. Formed centrally of member 16 is a semi-globular recess 20, which when the device is positioned for use is positioned centrally of the globe 19 and surrounds the lower portion thereof. The lower portion 21 of holder 17 is provided with a slot 22 through which passes a bolt 23 extending through an aperture in the lower `portion of the headlight. This form of my invention is designed preferably for very large headlightsA and its operation is best illustrated in Figure 1 by broken lines.

In the use of my device the globe is positioned for use in the usual manner. The deiiector and its holder is then positioned for use as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 to reflect the light straight ahead. When it is desired to deflect the light to a central point along the roadway the holder is rotated to the left for the right hand headlight andto the right for the left hand headlight the desired amount to focus the light where Fig.y 3)` is a horizontal cross section of understood that the tip of` it is desired, and a thumb nut 24 is then tightened to secure the holder y in its adjusted position.

Having .described my invention what I claim is:

In a headlight having ka reflector and a bulb the Combination of an approximately horizontal frame of a configuration in top plan to fit the interior of the reflector and 10 having a downwardly projecting apron surrounding the curved portion thereof, said apron being of a configuration to fit the perimeter of the lower half of the reflector and terminating at its lower end in an ear provided with a horizontally disposed slot therethrough; a bolt projecting through said reflector and slot; a wing nut on the inner end of said bolt whereby said frame is locked against movement; and a deflector detachably mounted in said frame having a central pocket adapted to surround the lower portion of the bulb.
