Be it known that LCHERUBINO NANNINI,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manhattan, county of Nye, and State of Nevada, haveinvented a new and useful Hair Clipper,A of which the following' is a specification.`

My invention relates in general to hair clippers as commonly used by barbers and has reference more particularly to means which may be considered in the nature of an attachment to enable the clippers to be used for cutting relatively long hair, whereas' heretofore the clippers have been only applicable to' clipping short hair.

As an example of the use of clippers equipped with the invention, it might be pointed out that as at present practiced clippers are usuallyused around the neck and discarded in vfavor-of shears when the hair on the side and ytop of the head is to be trimmed. Y W'ith m'yimproved means certain adjustments may be realized which will enable the clippers, as above stated, to be used for cutting the hair all over the head without the necessity of using shears. The attachment will enable the clippers to be used not only by barbers but also enable anyone to cut their own hair with every degree of satisfaction. Y V

The illustrative embodiment `of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 isa plan view of a conventional type of hair clipper `illustrating the application of my invention; Figure' 2 is a view in side elevation of the cutting head of the 'clipper showingjmy invention as applied thereto; Figure 3 is an enlarged view. in cross section on the line 3,-3 of Figure 2'; Figure 4c is a view in cross section on the line 4 4 of Figure 3, and Figure 5 is a bottom plan view lof a clipper head showing a part of my invention as applied thereto. i

Referring now to the drawing in detail, A represents a clipper having the customary fixed cutting blade, (5) and the slidably mounted `cutting blade (6). lt is of course known that the` ,blade (6) n is moved backend forth over the blade (5) by the handles of the clipperto produce .the re quired cutting effect between "the teeth of the cutters. V A,"lfhe length ofthe teeth is longer than the lteeth of the blade (5). y To guide or 'direct' the hair to be clipped to the blades (-5) and (6), I `prefer to. hinge a guide strip (9) to the "plate- (7) at the commencement of thefteeth(8)` This guide strip is positioned transversely across the plate (7)v and the outer free edge of the same terminates in relatively short teeth (9,). Normallthe guide strip lies flush with the plate 7) butwhen theclippers are being used the` hair willpush the same up againstpthe under 'Iside of the blade (5), as best shown lin Figurefl.' The important feature of the invention resides in adjusting the kplates( `(7)"in` spaced relation relative to 'the blade (5) 'according to the desired cutting effect'to ybe accomplished. For instance,` to clip the hair long the plate (7) will be moved further away` from the blade (5)y than if the hair is to be clipped short.4 This elfect is obvious. f

To realize asuitable mounting, for the plate (7') aswell as to accomplish the vari-y ous adjustments of the sameas stated, I prefer to provide openings through the clipper including the crownl (11) with the openings and (13), the sameextending through these made to receiveV the upstanding posts` y(12)t i openings in the clipper and protruding a suitabledistance above'the same. By turning the thumb knob (19) the pinions `will move the posts and in turn the plate (7) to effect proper adjustment, and whenthe adjustment is made it may be held (20) in engagement with the racks (14). To hold the key inengagement with the racks it is suggested to use a' spring strip (23), see Figure l, so `that the, keyiis maintained Linder the influence of vthe spring and in engagement with the racks. v

I claim:

1.111 a hair clipper having a xed and slidably movable cutting blade, means positioned beneath the fixed blade adapted to be moved to and from the same for adjusting the cutting effect of the blades, and comprising a plate having a plurality of teeth corresponding to the 'lower cutting blade, up'sta-nding posts on said blade, openings through Athe clipper made to receive said posts, each of said posts having arack face,

a transverse shaft mounted across said rack faces, pinions on said shaft meshing with said rack faces, and means for rotating said shaft whereby the said plate may be adjustably moved, to and from the lower cutting blade by raising or lowering said posts.

2. ln a hair clipper having a fixed and slidably movable cutting blade, means positioned beneath the fixed blade adapted to be moved to and from the same for adjusting the cuttingA effect of the blades, and comprising a plate having a plurality of teeth corresponding to the lower cutting blade, upstandingposts on said blade, openings through the clipper made to receive said posts, each of said posts having a rack face, a transverse shaft mounted across said rack faces, pinions on said shaft meshing with said rack faces, means for rotating said shaft whereby the said plate may be adjustably moved to and from the lower.` cutting blade by raising or lowering said postsand a housing upon the top of the clipper through which the posts extend, said shaft and pinions .being housed within said housing, and means for lockingthe posts to hold an adjustment `of the plate.
