COMBINED NECKTIE FORMER AND HOLDER.

Application filed June 2, 1920. Serial No. 386,007.

T all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES FREDERICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbiana, in the county of Columbiana ancLState of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Necktie Former and Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My present invention relates to necktie formers and holders, and has for an object the production of a novel construction of frame or base structure, upon which an exact representation of a four-inhand tie may be formed from a comparatively short piece of suitable material, or as may be preferred, from material of the usual length for ties of the class mentioned.

It has for a further object the production of novel means, in combination, whereby such ready made ties may be quickly applied to or detached from collars without the necessitv of removing the latter.

It has for a further object a material prolongation of the life and service of neckties of the class indicated by making it possible to tie and retie the same as often as occasion may require, thereby transferring the conventional knot from soiled to theretofore unexposed and consequently unsoiled portions.

A further object is that of avoiding the oftentimes difficult and disastrous process of sliding the necktie between the folds of a turndown collar in the usual manner for tightening the knot of four-in-hand ties, made from a single piece of material.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention will now be particularly described and then pointed out in the claims following.

In the accompanying drawlngs which form part of this application fon Letters Patent and whereon corresponding characters indicate like parts in the several views:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved form and holder detached;

Figure 2 is a detached fragmentary view, being a longitudinal sectional view through one end of a neckband;

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4l4 of Figure 1;

Figure 5 is a perspective view similar to Figure 1, but showing the initial folds of a four-in-hand tie in the process of formation;

Figure 6 is a reverse view or rear elevation of tie completely formed in position for use; and

Figure 7 is also a perspective view showing a complete ready-made four-in-hand tie, applied to a turn-down collar, the latter being broken away at one point exposing to view one wire retainer.

Reference being had to the drawings and numerals thereon, 1 indicates a body-loop of unitary construction made of spring-wire having parallel sides, and a horizontal base 2. This body loop 1 near its upper portion is bent outward more or less to regulate and determine the angle of the tie knot when formed thereon, is bifurcated as best shown by Figure 1 of the drawings, and proceeds thence oppositely and laterally in. a general horizontal direction as at 3, 3, to oppositely disposed spring retaining hooks or links 4, 4, for purposes which will later appear.

Intermediate of the loop 1 and each of said terminal hook links 4, 4, the lateral collar engaging members 3, 3, are both provided with a spreader drop 5, 5, formed by depressions in the wire itself, and as best shown by Figure 2, these in turn are encased by a relatively flat sleeve 6, 6, of thin sheet metal, which latter in turn are enclosed by finishing sheathes 7, 7, of fabric sewed permanently in place as a means of concealing the metal parts from view.

Secured to both wires of the body loop 1 in an intermediate position is a substantially cylindrical filler member 8, slotted throu hout its reverse side as at 9, and below t is in hinged relation with the horizontal base 2 of said loop 1 is a locking arm 10. This arm 10 is also formed of relatively stifi' spring wire, is of upwardly diverging form, and terminates in a U-shaped spring clip 11 for detachably but securely engaging a collar button (not shown). It is also arranged and adapted to enter slot 9 when folded upward as shown by Figure 6, and

is of suflicient width adjacent its uppermost or free end to enter said slot with a slight spring action, for purposes which will appear in a brief statement of operation.

Bridging the gap between the lateral collar-band-engaging elements enclosed by the envelopes or sleeves 6, is a curved tie wire 12, employed as an extra precaution to prevent spreading of the wires of body loop l.

This wire 12 terminates at each end in a downturned angle 13 which latter thus in terlocks with depressed or spreader portions of the wires 5, 5, as shown by Figure 2.

This improved four-in-hand tie former and holder, being constructed and arranged substantially as illustrated by Figure 1 of the drawings, a strip of suitable material eitherof full or short length, is first placed vertically upon the outer face of the tubular filler 8, is thence wrapped once around one oi the sleeves 6 and its outer covering 7., and thence transversely in front of the first mentioned strip of material as indicated by Figure 5 of the drawings. By this means a loop is formed directly in front of the said filler 8, whereupon the tie material is carried back of the other of said sleeves and coverings 6, 7, and downward through the loop aforesaid in the usual manner thus completing the knot portion of the tie.

This accomplished, the locking arm 10 with its terminal button clip 11, is foldedupward as indicated by Figure 6, crimping a portion otthe tie material through slot 9 of the filler member 8 with which it interlocks by spring action.

The ready-made tie resembling in all appearances a hand tied article is now ready for application to the collar of a wearer, this process being .merely that of quickly introducing the two retaining hooks 4, 4:, under the collar band as shown by Figure 7 4', and as quickly introducing the spring clip- I now claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.:

1. A necktie former and holder'compris- .ing in combination .a body loop, lateral and oppositely disposed collar-engaging members, retaining hooks upon the ends of said lateral members, a rigid flat sleeve encasing each of said collar-engaging members, and means, for detachably securing the device to the collar buttonof a wearer.

2. A necktie former and holder c'omprising in combination a body loop, lateralrcolla r engaging members, oppositely disposed retaining hooks formed upon said lateral members, a tubular filler member slotted at its back, a locking bar hinged upon said body loop-and adapted to fold into the slot of said filler member, and a button-engaging clip carried by said locking bar.

A necktie former and holder compris ing in combination a body loop, lateral collar-engaging members, oppositely disposed retaining hooks formed uponsaid lateral members, a tubular filler member secured to said body loop adapted toafford fullness to the tie when formed, and a button-engaging clip carried by ahinged extension of said body loop as the-means of securing the device in position.
